BRICKLEY'S GIANTS BEAT QUAKERS BY FIELD GOAL
Jim Laird, Late of Colgate, Boots Over the Only Score From 33-Yard Line.
BECK'S FUMBLE COSTLY
Manhattan Club Fails to Make a First Down Against Locals.
Without making a first down, Charley Brickley's New York Giants beat the Quakers yesterday by a 3 to 0 score.
Jim Laird, the former Colgate backfield star, accounted for the three points which won the game, before the fracas was 10 minutes old. Laird booted a beautiful goal from the 33-yard line, after the Gothamites had battered the Quakers line unsuccessfully for three downs.
It was one of the Quakers' fumbles which paved the way for the score by Brickley's outfit. Clarence Beck, former Penn State All-American, perpetrated an unfortunate fumble, attempting to get off an end run, and several New Yorkers pounced on the pigskin on the 30-yard line. Three plays gained nothing for the visitors and then Laird's toe was given some exercise.
Throughout the rest of the game the Quakers were constantly on the aggressive. They gained ground, and then they gained some more ground. But that was as far as it went. For whenever they got within striking distance of the goal line there was a fumble or the big Quaker backs failed in the pinch. At any rate, there was no shortage of first downs for the local stars. Nor was there much difficulty about gaining ground. But in the pinches they failed.
