Frankford Opens Season With Stirring Win
ROCHESTER JEFFERSONS GAVE HOME CLUB FIGHT IN SEASON'S OPENING
Some Backfield for Jackets
Frankford Yellow Jackets fought their way to a 21-0 victory over the Rochester Jeffersons last Saturday in the most stirring opening day battle ever staged by the local team.
Rochester, undoubtedly, was the best opening attraction ever picked by Frankford. The New Yorkers came to Philadelphia with the utmost confidence not only of beating the home outfit, but also of being strong contenders for league championship honors.
To the strong lineup forwarded to Manager Bowker earlier in the week, the visitors had added Joe Alexander, star of last year's Frankford team, and the visitors provided formidable opposition with Benny Boynton, Shag Sheard, Argus, Alexander and other stars.
The Frankford victory was a tribute to two weeks of intensive training and coaching under Berryman. The home squad was in better condition and displayed much better teamwork than the visitors. Condition told, and in the final period of each half Frankford was able to batter their way through the opposition to score.
The first touchdown came after a desperate advance that enabled Frankford to carry the ball to the thirty-yard line, from which place Tex Hamer hurled a fine pass to Eddie Doyle and the former West Pointer scampered over the line for the first six-pointer of the season. Russ Stein failed to kick the goal, but three visitors were detected off-side and the points were allowed.
Frankford secured six more points in he final period by battering the way to the visitors' five-yard line from which place Storer hurled himself over for a touchdown. Russ Stein kicked the goal. The final score was made by Finn who replaced Storer at halfback after the ball had been carried within striking distance. Finn made the touchdown on the first play after entering the game. Stein kicked the point.
The Rochester team could do nothing with the home line, but in the final period began a brilliant forward pass attack engineered by Benny Boynton that carried the ball from their thirty-yard line to within the shadow of Frankford's goal, when Gulian intercepted a pass and broke up the attack.
