Vol. 9: Westinghouse Live Wires
The suburban communities of Delaware County, located just to the south of Philadelphia, were a hotbed for gridiron rivalries during the early 1920s. Strong clubs from such towns as Clifton Heights, Colwyn, Darby and Norwood vied annually for the coveted county championship. In 1923 one of the leading contenders for that title was the Westinghouse Electric "Live Wires." This team had spent several seasons developing into a championship contender, and was finally in position to make a serious run at the title. Heading into Thanksgiving the club's record stood at 5-2-1. The pair of losses came in close games with two strong Philadelphia clubs, the Holmesburg AC and Clearfield AA. Over the holiday weekend the Live Wires split two games with a 0-13 loss to Defiance Bulldogs of Wilmington (DE), and a 12-7 victory over Leiperville, a fellow Delaware County eleven. The loss to Defiance was especially disappointing because the Live Wires had bested the Bulldogs earlier in the season. This set the stage for a final showdown with the Clifton Heights Orange & Black the following weekend in a contest that would decide the county championship.
