Glossary of GIS Terms

Digitizing - A data conversion process by which an individual traces a paper map or a raster image (heads up digitizing) into a GIS package.  Digitizing a map produces vector data as the end result.
Dot Density Map - A thematic map that carries information by showing a large number of tiny dots, wherein each dot represents some specific unit quantity. Example: Population Map
GIS - (Geographic Information Systems) Collection of computer hardware and software designed to efficiently create, manipulate, analyze, and display all types of geographiclly or spatially referenced data.  A GIS allows complex spatial operations that are very difficult to do otherwise.
GMS - (GIS Mapping Solutions) Independent GIS consulting company
Geo Coding - A process of assigning X and Y coordinates to records from address information.
Graduated Symbol Map - A thematic map that shows symbols in a variety of sizes to indicate which objects have higher or lower numerical values
Layer - Basic building block of every GIS.  GIS projects usually consist of several superimposed layers.  Layers are also know as themes.  Examples of a theme or a layer could be: streets, utility lines, parcels, zip code boundaries, etc.)  GIS layers are made up of Points, Lines or Polygons.
Pin Map, Push-Pin Map - A type of map named after the practice of inserting push-pins into a wall map. Pin map features are point objects. Geocoding and GPS are ways to create point objects. Example: Customer Map
Query - The selection of information from a database (SQL Statement)
Spatial Analysis - An operation that examines spatial data with the intent of extracting new data from some required condition.  Many GIS packages provide tools to facilitate these conditions such as buffer generation, polygon overlay, intersect, contains, or within adjacent.
Thematic Map - A type of map that uses a variety graphic styles to graphically display information about the map's underlying data.
