Now and Then
I'm on the right in both pictures
But philisophically, I'm on the left.

Welcome to Judi's Place
Interests:
Performing Hammered Dulcimer, Playing
Piano & Dulcimer for Contra Dances,
secretly meeting with the Ladies Dulcimer
and Auntie-Terrorists Society,
Sewing and Painting on tiles and ceramics!

I'm glad you stopped by for a visit. Here's a
little about myself. I have been playing
the hammered dulcimer since 1979 and
teaching privately and classes at music
festivals since 1981. In my home in
Highland Michigan (Western Oakland County)
I teach private 45 minute lessons in
Hammered & Mt Dulcimer & Backup Piano.
I also teach in both private & group settings
a "Variations & Deviations on the
Hammered Dulcimer", a class I have found
to be popular when I teach at festivals.
We take a simple version of a tune and
expand on the possibilties of variation,
harmonies and rhythmic deviations. These
lessons are varied in length & usually
feature one or two tunes per session.
I've recently packaged them up for 'long
distance students' (See below)

I perform with the groups; The Olde Michigan
RUFFWATER STRINGBAND (with my husband Glen
and 8 - 15 of our closest friends);
Just Friends (4 of the most talented and
modest women in Southeast Michigan);
Aunt Lu and the Oakland County All Stars
(everybody knows ole Auntie Lu.)

In addition, I've had the opportunity to
play contra dance piano with several great
musicians around Michigan, Kentucky,
Skyum and Oosted Denmark etc.

In 2004, my husband Glen & I received
the "Lifetime Achievement" award from
the Midwest Folk Alliance at their Autumn
Conference in Lake Geneva Wisconsin.
Needless to say, we have not retired since then :).

Below you will find a list of the music books
I have published which are used by
many Hammered Dulcimer Clubs, Dance
Music Groups, and Folk Music
Organizations. Click on Order Blank
at the top of the page and print it out to
order (please do a print preview to eliminate
excess printing :)

In addition to publishing books, I perform
hammered dulcimer music at festivals, private
and business parties, weddings and in general,
anywhere the lovely sound of the hammered
dulcimer would add a pleasing backdrop.

NEW!!! NEW!!! NEW!!!
Hammered Dulcimer Workshop Packets
Price $15 + s & h (both for $25 + s&h)
I've been doing an "Embellishment, Variations and Deviations on a Theme"
for years and have started to put together packages of each of the workshops.
The packet includes the written music of the basic tune, several variations & in
some cases a harmony variation. Also included is a CD of the written music,
played on hammered dulcimer accompanied by piano in the background. The
basic melody is played through 2 times and the variations are played through
6 times each. The intent is that the student can play along with the cd and once
they've mastered them try the variations against the basic melody. It also provides
the 'mini-jam' experience in the privacy of your own home.
Each Packet includes the written music of the basic tune, several variations
& in some cases a harmony variation. Also included is a CD of the music,
played on hammered dulcimer accompanied by piano in the background.
Each tune is played through at different tempos to give the musician a
‘practice buddy’ and provides a mini-jam experience in your own home.
Currently  available - “Grumbling Old Man, Growling Old Woman”,
“The Old Man & The Old Woman” (yes they are different tunes) this
year’s Evart Workshop Tune, “Bay of Fundy”, this year’s Midland
Workshop and “Wake Up Susan’s Apron” (Paul Van Arsdale’s version
of “Wake Up Susan” which is actually a combination of
Wake Up Susan & Mason’s Apron normally played in A but he plays
it in “G” so do we. Feedback has been very positive.
