VALERIAN KOCHUBA

A former Glassport resident, Valerian N. Kochuba, 59, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Monday at home. He was a retired officer in the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Born May 25, 1940, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late Nicholas Kochuba and Steve and Helen Sorochek Kochuba. He is survived by daughters, Valerie Dexter of Burke, Va., and Francine Oliver Kochuba in Antarctica; sister, Natalie D’Amico of Glassport; brother, Stephen T. Kochuba of Glassport; nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received tomorrow from 2 to 9 p.m. in the Edmund E. Wojciechowski Jr. Funeral Home, Glassport. A blessing service will be offered there Friday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Carmen D’Amico. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, North Versailles Twp.

JOHN SHERBINE

John R. (Jack) Sherbine, 78, of West Mifflin died yesterday at home. Retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant with 23 years of service, he was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and was also retired as an emergency room admissions clerk from McKeesport Hospital.

He was a member of Christ the Light of the World Parish and Burt Foster American Legion Post 361, both in Duquesne, and the Air Force Sergeants' Association and was a former member of the Duquesne Annex Volunteer Fire Department.

Born March 18, 1922, in Glassport, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ida Zagst Sherbine. He is survived by sister and brothers, Veronica Kerrigan of West Mifflin, Joseph C. Sherbine of West Middlesex and Daniel J. Sherbine of McKeesport; nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received tomorrow from noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Maloy-Schleifer Funeral Home, Inc., Duquesne. A blessing will be offered there Tuesday at 9 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in Holy Name Church with the Rev. Dennis Colamarino as celebrant. Interment will be in New St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles Twp. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Christ the Light of the World Window Restoration Fund.

BERNICE BABYAK

Bernice A. Babyak, 81, of Glassport died Saturday in Jefferson Hospital. She was a retired cafeteria worker at the Fisher Body Division, General Motors Corp., West Mifflin, and a member of St. Mark Parish.

Born June 16, 1918, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Anna Kaczwnski Pacewicz and the wife of the late Vincent W. Babyak Sr. She is survived by daughter, Colette Kacik with whom she resided; sons, V.W. (Vince) Babyak of Clover, S.C. and Fritz Babyak of McKeesport; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

EDWARD BARTKO

A former Glassport resident, Edward G. Bartko, 70, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Sunday at home. Born Nov. 10, 1929, in Glassport, he was the son of the late George Joseph and Mary Stecik Bartko.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Blankenship Bartko; daughter, Diane Crater; sister, Marie Demalon; and brother, Colin Zarhett.

Friends will be received in the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., Pleasant Hills, tomorrow from 2 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at noon in Nativity Church, South Park Twp., by the Rev. James Gretz. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills. Alice M. Detman, 99, of Glassport died yesterday in UPMC McKeesport. She was a member of Glassport Baptist Church.

Born in McKeesport, July 26, 1900, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Emma Helsel and wife of the late William Detman Sr. She is survived by daughter, Mildred Greenwald of Glassport; son, Glenn M. Detman Sr. of Glassport; 15 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren; brother, Wilbur Helsel of McKeesport; nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Edmund E. Wojciechowski Jr. Funeral Home, Glassport. Service will be conducted there Thursday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Ira Kelly. Interment will be in Restland Memorial Park, Monroeville.

JAMES VELTER SR.

James A. Velter Sr., 95, of McKeesport died Sunday in UPMC McKeesport. Retired as a roll turner from the National plant, U.S. Steel Corp., with 49 years of service, he was a member of St. Patrick Parish, charter and life member of McKeesport Amvets Post 8, former usher and church committee member of the former St. Perpetua Church and played softball with leagues in McKeesport and baseball for the Griffin Oilers in Glassport.

Born in McKeesport, Feb. 2, 1905, he was the son of the late Dominic and Mary Marnell Velter. He is survived by his wife, Julia F. Lonetti Velter; daughter, Donna M. Murman of North Huntingdon Twp.; son, James A. Velter Jr. at home; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and sister, Minnie Lonetti of McKeesport.

Edward J. Mehalcik, 71, of Glassport died yesterday in Kane Regional Center. A retired molder's helper from Bucyrus Erie in Glassport, he was a member of St. Martin de Porres Parish and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Born Jan. 9, 1929, in Glassport, he was a son of the late John J. and Ann Kociban Mehalcik. He is survived by his wife, Ann G. Jakubec Mehalcik; son, George E. Mehalcik of Glassport; two grandchildren; brothers, George Mehalcik of Las Vegas, Nev., and John Mehalcik of Glassport; nieces and nephews.

JOSEPH ROHALL

Joseph Rohall, 86, of Glassport died yesterday in UPMC McKeesport. A self-employed automobile mechanic in Glassport, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War 11 and a member of Queen of the Rosary Parish and American Legion Post 443, both in Glassport.

Born March 31, 1914, in Port Vue, he was a son of the late Michael and Julia Rohall. He is survived by his wife, Pauline C. Pundzak Rohall; daughter, Sandra Jones of Birmingham, Ala.; son, David A. Rohall of Liberty; four grandchildren; and brother, Michael Rohall in Virginia.

EDWARD BASCH

Edward Paul Basch, 73, of Jefferson Hills died Sunday. Retired as a guidance counselor from Mount Lebanon High School with 30 years of service, he was a former science teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School and member of the Pennsylvania State Counselor Association where he served as president from 1972 to 1973 and received its Counselor of the Year Award in 1979.

A former co-owner and director of Camp Falcon Summer Camp for Boys in Carrollton, Ohio, he was a member of Pine Run United Methodist Church in Clairton and served as a lay leader, lay assistant, teacher and steward and on its pastor-parish relations committee and finance committee.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he received a bachelor of science degree in education in 1953 from the University of Pittsburgh and was affiliated with the Sigma Chi Fraternity and received a master’s degree in administration from Duquesne University.

A member of Clairton Area Chapter 1612, American Association of Retired Persons, he was a former legislative affairs officer and president and served as the legislative director of the AARP 30th Congressional District.

Born in Glassport, March 28, 1927, he was a son of the late Andrew and Anna Gasser Basch. He is survived by his wife, Lois Irene Kuskie Basch; daughters, Patricia L. Balzer and Chris Ann Hummel of Eightyfour and Cynthia I. Jones of South Park Twp.; and five grandchildren.

Friends will be received in the S.M. Finney Funeral Home, Inc., Clairton, tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be offered Saturday at 10 a.m. in Pine Run United Methodist Church by the Rev. Isabelle Witt, 89, of Glassport died yesterday in Jefferson Hospital. She was a member of Queen of the Rosary Parish in Glassport.

Born in McKeesport, Nov. 24, 1910, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Ann Schelling Babyak and the wife of the late Harry A. Witt. She is survived by sons, Harry W. Witt of Naples, Fla., and James A. Witt of Rostraver Twp.; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Born in McKeesport, April 25, 1913, he was the son of the late Andrew and Anna Shimko Ogurchak and the husband of the late Erma Kola Ogurchak. He is survived by his wife, Rita Will Stein Ogurchak; sister, Bertha Stevens of McKeesport; nieces and nephews.

Anna Jackson Gibson, 90, of Glassport died yesterday in Kane Regional Center. A former sales clerk for the former Newman’s Children’s Store in McKeesport, she was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons in Glassport.

Born in McKeesport, Aug. 27, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary Daven Rarick and the wife of the late Albert E. Jackson and Kenneth Gibson. She is survived by sons, James E. Jackson of Liberty and Albert E. Jackson of Plum; daughters, Lois Jean Wunderley of Liberty and Mary Ann Bowman of Somerset; 11 grandchildren and a great grandson.

Born March 20, 1917, in Greenock, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Adeline Telemonti DePiero and the wife of the late Philip Sgattone. She is survived by brothers, Salvadore DePiero of Glassport and Samuel DePiero of Mount Lebanon; sisters, Clara Preler of Glassport and Mary Unger of McKeesport; nieces and nephews.

A retired sheet finisher from the Irvin plant, U.S. Steel Corp., he was a member of St. Mary Serbian Orthodox Church in Clairton, Polish National Alliance Lodge 750 in Glassport and the Oldtimers Golf League.

Born July 12, 1911, in Clairton, he was a son of the late Rade and Martha Vuckovich Mislanovich. She is survived by her husband, John Svatz; daughters, Christina Schrantz of Penn Hills, Geraldine Dragos of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., and Rosalie Chestlo of Beltsville, Md.; seven grandchildren 13 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; brother, Peter Sakauskas of Port Vue; nieces and nephews.

She is survived by a son, Alvin Rzetelny of Livonia, Mich.; daughter, Mercedes E. Mularski of Glassport; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; sister, Clara Kruchensky of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

Graduated from Glassport High School in 1940 and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, she was a retired student supervisor at the school of nursing and a member of Amity Presbyterian Church in Dravosburg; Dravosburg Women’s Club; and Golden Triangle Bull Terrier Club.

Born Sept. 14, 1922, in Glassport, she was the daughter of the late John L. Shaw and Ethel Barbetta Shaw Hayes. She is survived by her husband, John (Jack) M. Brown; daughter, Joyce L. Brown of West Newton; son, John R. (Jack) Brown of Latrobe; three grandchildren; and brothers, Bill Shaw of Ocean City, N.J., and Roy Shaw of North Huntingdon Twp.

Helen M. Chester, 82, of Glassport died Sunday in the Liberty home of her son, James W. Chester. She was a retired clerk at Kills Pharmacy in Glassport and a member of Queen of the Rosary Parish and its Rosary Society.

Born Oct. 22, 1917, in Glassport, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ann Maslowski Trepanowski. She is survived by her son; a grandson; brother, Ray Trepanowski of Munster, Ind.; sisters, Theresa Chockla and Martha Trepanowski of Glassport, Ret. Lt. Col. Stella Brown of El Paso, Tex., and Jane Richards of Bruin; nieces and nephews.

Anna Hospodar Shamya, 82, of Clairton died Saturday at home. She was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Clairton.

Born in Glassport, March 21, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Pavlocsak Hospodar and the wife of the late Joseph Shamya. She is survived by daughters, Dolores Powers of Virginia Beach, Va., and Carole Ann Shamya of Pleasant Hills; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; sisters, Alice Loposky of West Mifflin and Margaret Caldwell of Glassport; brother, Michael Hospodar of White Oak; nieces and nephews.

Friends are being received in the A.J. Bekavac Funeral Home, Clairton, today from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church. Interment will be in New St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles Twp.

RUSSELL NAYLOR

Russell H. Naylor, 76, of Elizabeth Twp. died Saturday in UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh. A retired draftsman from Mesta Machine Co., Homestead, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the China-Burma-India Veterans Association; St. Michael Church in Elizabeth Twp., where he served as an usher; Gen. Smedley D. Butler American Legion Post 701 in White Oak; St. Michael Council 10077, Knights of Columbus in Elizabeth Twp.; and the Eagle Advancement Committee of the Boy Scouts of America.

Born Feb. 28, 1924, in Connellsville, he was a son of the late Florence Gertrude Griffiths Naylor. He is survived by his wife, Alice Talbot Naylor; son, Russell M. Naylor of North Huntingdon Twp.; three granddaughters; sisters, Louise Brennan of Las Vegas, Nev., and Betty Bright of Rio Rancho, N.Mex.; nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the Daniel F. Bekavac Funeral Home, Versailles, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at noon in St. Michael Church by the Rev. Tim Evans. Interment will be in New St. Joseph Cemetery, North Versailles Twp.

ELMER YONEK

Elmer Yonek, 82, of Glassport died Saturday in UPMC McKeesport. A retired craneman from the Clairton plant, U.S. Steel Corp., he was a member of Queen of the Rosary Parish and Polish National Alliance Lodge 750, both in Glassport.

Born in McKeesport, Nov. 13, 1917, he was a son of the late John and Sue Mross Yonek and the husband of the late Audrey Mann Yonek. He is survived by four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; brothers, John Yonek of Glassport and Dr. Frank Yonek of Palm Desert, Calif.; and sisters, Margaret Ihnat of Sacramento, Calif., Elsie Guy of Mesa, Ariz., Marian Bartko and Evelyn Gooch of Glassport and Julie Gruber of McKeesport.

Friends are being received today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Edmund E. Wojciechowski Jr. Funeral Home, Glassport. Funeral will begin there tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in Queen of the Rosary Church with the Rev. Casimir Kedzierski as celebrant. Interment will be in Penn-Lincoln Memorial Park, North Huntingdon Twp.

MATHILDA RAMOS

Mathilda N. Ramos, 80, of Glassport died yesterday in UPMC McKeesport. She was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in West Elizabeth.

Born Sept. 9, 1919, in Willock, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Anna Gruyla Karlovski and the wife of the late Marcelino Ramos. She is survived by sons, Alfred Ramos of Wolfeboro, N.H., Victor Ramos of Glassport and George Ramos of Enid, Okla.; daughters, Evelyn Ramos of Glassport, Adela Lynch of Dover, N.H., and Elaine Colman of Bradenton Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; brothers, John Karlovski of Buena Vista and Wasil Karlovski of West Mifflin; sisters, Olga Gaska of McKeesport, Julie Conlon of Liberty and Ann Schwaed of Beverly Hills, Fla.; nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be offered Friday at 9 p.m. in the Congregation Jehovah’s Witnesses in West Elizabeth with Elder Thomas Dahl officiating. No visitation is scheduled. Interment will be private. Arraignments are in charge of the Drew J. Gilbert Funeral Home, Inc., Boston, Elizabeth Twp.
