North Huntingdon woman's hard work came with a smile

By Jerry Vondas, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Sunday, November 27, 2011

Service with a smile could have described Mary Ann Petras's 30-year career as a waitress.

"My mother had the personality and the temperament to wait on people from all walks of life," said her son, Stephen Petras of North Huntingdon.

"Her customers at Eat'n Park, where she worked both part time and full time, were like an extended family -- people who could confide in her when they were happy or feeling blue," said her son, an SMA Equity Trader with Federated Investors.

Mary Ann Petras of North Huntingdon, formerly of Glassport died on Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, in Golden Heights Personal Care Home in Irwin. She was 68.

"My mother worked part time when we were still in school," her son said. "But once Dad retired and we were in high school, she began to work the afternoon shift at Eat'n Park on Lysle Boulevard.

"As kids, my sisters, Joanne, Elizabeth and I enjoyed walking with Mom through McKeesport, it seemed that she knew everybody in town," her son said.

Colleen Williams, a waitress at Eat'n Park, who worked with Mrs. Petras for many years, recalled her as a woman who never had a bad day.

"She not only went out of her way to please her customers, she also went out of her way to help the people she worked with," said Williams.

"During the rush hours, Mary, if she was free at the moment, would pitch in and help you serve your tables."

But moving fast and focusing on what she was doing came natural for Mrs. Petras, who grew up on her family's farm in Bedford, Bedford County.

"My mother was one of nine children," said Stephen Petras. "And they were all expected to help, whether it was with the animals or out in the fields."

In 1960, after graduating from Bedford High School, Mary Ann Stiffler started her career as a waitress with the former Howard Johnson Restaurant on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the Bedford area.

"That's how she met Dad," said her son. "He'd often stop in when he was on the Turnpike. They were married in 1963 and moved to Glassport, where my father was employed at National Tube Works in McKeesport."

Attending church at the former Holy Trinity Church in McKeesport on Sunday was a must for the Petras family, her son said.

In addition to her son, Stephen, Mrs. Petras is survived by her daughters, Joanne Gribschaw of North Huntingdon and Elizabeth Miller of Mars; seven grandchildren; a sister, Betty Stevenson of Lancaster; and brothers Bernard Stiffler of York and John, Robert, Floyd and Harry Stiffler Jr., all of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Elsie Clark Stiffler, and her husband, Joseph.

Friends will be received from noon to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today in Daniel F. Bekavac Funeral Home and Crematory, 4504 Walnut St., Versailles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. John Moineau officiating.

Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Port Vue.
