Pittsburgh Post Gazette January 19, 2013

HONDAL ELEANORE 80, of East McKeesport, died peacefully in her home on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, surrounded by her family.

A devoted wife and mother, she had a sparkling personality, an infectious laugh and a lively spirit.

She was born Eleanore Bartko in 1932, the youngest daughter of nine children. Her parents were the late John and Rose Dobos Bartko of Glassport.

A graduate of Glassport High School, Eleanore met the love of her life, Joseph Hondal, when the two of them worked at the former Balsamo's market in McKeesport while they were still teenagers. They were married in 1952 and moved to East McKeesport, where they built a cozy house and had two children, Saundra Joe and Tim. While Eleanore at times worked outside the home, including as a switchboard operator and receptionist for Ore Fraction in Pittsburgh and as a front-desk manager at the former Sheraton Inn in McKeesport, she was a dedicated homemaker and always put her family first. She loved to sew and delighted in making clothes for Saundra and herself. She was an excellent cook and baker, with specialties ranging from her Slovak family's nut rolls to her Italian mother-in-law's baccala to her famous apple pie. Her Sunday dinners were feasts. After her children were married, Eleanore hoped for a granddaughter, so she bought a box of pink, lacy baby bonnets. But she was blessed with three grandsons, each of whom she loved immensely and spent much time caring for in their early years. Later she enjoyed following their school and sports activities. In her free time, Eleanore was an avid fiction reader and crossword puzzle solver. She relished summer evenings on the porch swing with family members, and her favorite vacation spot was the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ. Throughout the fall, she and Joe would cheer in front of the television for their favorite football team, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. In the winter she loved watching figure skating on television.

Eleanore is survived by Joe, her beloved husband of 61 years; daughter, Saundra (Tom) Waseleski; and son Tim (Cindy) Hondal; three grandsons, Bryan (Jessica) Hondal, Michael (Emmalynne) Waseleski and Brenden (Taylor) Hondal; five great-grandchildren, Isabel, Michaela, Carson, Colten and Jaycee. Eleanore also leaves two brothers, Daniel and Tom; and was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Eugene, and Vincent; and three sisters, Marie, Rosemarie, and Jean.

Friends will be received at the ALFIERI FUNERAL HOME, INC., Marguerite Avenue, Wilmerding, PA 15148, (412) 824-4332, on Sat. from 7-9 p.m. and Sun., 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Prayer Service in the funeral home on Monday at 8:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial in St. Robert Bellarmine Church in East McKeesport at 9:30 a.m., with interment immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery in North Versailles.

Decorated veteran stood up for freedom

Published: Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, 9:00 p.m. Updated 9 hours ago

Vietnam War veteran Roger Herrmann would not put up with anyone speaking against the United States, his daughter said.

“You could never say anything wrong about the country,” Rodana Gorman said. “He always had to have an American flag flying. He fought for that freedom, so there was nothing you were going to say bad or anything.”

Roger D. Herrmann of Glassport died of cardiac arrest in Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013. He was 65.

Mr. Herrmann was retired from the maintenance department of Manor Care in Monroeville. Mr. Herrmann enlisted in the Army at 17, when he was a 10th-grader at McKeesport High School. He served in Vietnam from June 30, 1967, until the next June.

According to his service record, his family said, Mr. Herrmann received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple Heart.

Mr. Herrmann's family said that he received one of the Bronze Stars because he carried a wounded comrade through enemy fire for nearly a mile to a medic. The friend died of his injuries. Mr. Herrmann was wounded several times, his family said.

“He never displayed the medals,” Gorman said. “I've seen them, but he never had them out. He never talked about anything that had to do with the war. He just didn't want to talk about it.”

In addition to his daughter, Rodana Gorman of Blandon, Mr. Herrmann is survived by sons, Daniel Ellwood of Liberty and John Ellwood of East McKeesport; daughter, Maryjean Herrmann of McKeesport; brothers, Eugene Herrmann, Dave Herrmann and Paul Herrmann; sisters Kathy Chesney and Lori Mendiola; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Wojciechow-ski Funeral Home, 640 Vermont Ave., Glassport. Interment with military honors will be conducted Monday in Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Cecil, Washington County.
