Pictures of the Intensity Sails Flying Scot jib

The jib arrived five days after I placed the order.

The roll bag for the jib was missing. I emailed Intensity Sails and a jib roll bag arrived a few days later.

Crispy new dacron! The sail will be rolled from now on. The Intensity Sails web site says the cloth is 4.65 oz. which is heavier than racing sails from other Flying Scot sailmakers.

The Intensity Sails logo. There wasn't one on the other side so I'll ask Jim Myers to send me one.

The bronze hanks are made in Sweden. Heavier, no doubt, than the snaps that other Flying Scot sailmakers use. There are 10 of them on the luff, the same as the number of snaps on my Schurr jib.

The clew.

The head.

An overall shot showing the leech roach, which is well within spec. See "Maximum Leech Roach" in the measurement sheet above. The leech telltale is cloth and sewn in. The two luff telltales on this side of the sail are blue and came already attached. The telltales on the other side are red.

Jib window. I added two more lower luff telltales to both sides of the sail later, in a horizontal line close to the existing ones... green on this side; red on the other side.

Measuring the sail. I laid out a triangle using the measurements on the FSSA jib measurement sheet. At each of the corners of the triangle there is a small sheet of paper with a nail at the exact location of the corner of the triangle. At the tack, the nail goes through the sail's tack fitting. The tape measures are next to the nails, so they form an outline of the triangle specified in the measurement sheet. The corners of the sail fit completely within the triangle, as required by the class spec.

Head of the sail in the triangle. According to the Official Drawing in the FSSA handbook, it's ok for the leech roach, the foot roach and the corner fittings to be outside of the measurement triangle.

Close up of the head in the measurement triangle; well within spec.

The clew in the measurement triangle.

The nail is through the tack fitting. I did this because there was no one around to hold the tack to put some tension on the sail to check the other corners. According to the official drawing, the fittings can extend outside the required triangle. The corners of this sail fit completely within the triangle even with the nail representing the required triangle corner going through the tack fitting.

A bit difficult to see the measurement because of parallax, but the foot roach is 4 1/2", the maximum permitted.

Jib window placement. Dimensions are in inches. Though the dimension is not shown, the roach at the foot of the jib is 4 1/2”.
