Bold, bright, and rife with natural wonder...Not the words you think of when you hear Dekalb Avenue? Help us change that! We are creating a 340-foot mural that shows how local water eventually reaches both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The mural will highlight the natural history and environmental infrastructure that underlies and supports life in Atlanta, and right here in our neighborhood. |

Project StatusJanuary 2006 was an exciting month for the Watershed Mural! Thanks to all the volunteers for making this happen. Our muralist, David Fitcher, has returned to Boston, but will return again in April. Work continues on the mural and there are lots of volunteer opportunities. See the Project Schedule. |

Where is the mural? The Watershed Mural spans the block between Connecticut and Arizona Avenues in Atlanta.
|

Why Dekalb Avenue? Two major river basins connect in the heart of Atlanta, forming a boundary known as the “Eastern Subcontinental Divide.” This ridgeline begins east of Atlanta and extends easterly along what is now Dekalb Avenue. This dividing line separates water that ultimately flows to the Atlantic Ocean from water that flows to the Gulf of Mexico. The mural will remind us of these wonderful realities. It will illustrate waterways and the flora and fauna they support as the water meanders across Georgia to the Gulf and Atlantic. |

Who's painting the mural? The mural will be designed and painted under the direction of David Fichter, a renowned muralist who has painted more than 20 murals around the world. Fichter will be assisted by local artists Diirga Darshi and Tom Ferguson, and volunteers like you!
To give you an idea of David Fichter’s work, the above image is part of the Mystic River watershed mural he did in Somerville, Massachusetts. To see the latest design sketch (black & white only) for our mural, visit Watershed Mural - News. |
