I am a member of Clann Tartan, a group that reenacts aspects of life in seventeenth century Scotland. I have prepared some reading notes, generally related to my activities in the group. You can also see some pictures of reenactment events in which I have participated.
Articles by Maeve Kane and friends. Maeve is a brilliant and energetic member of Clann.
Historical Background for Clann Tartan. Originally published in the Clann Tartan Newsletter. Brief outline of the Thirty Years' War and how Scottish Highlanders got involved. Lots of references.
Selected Dances from Playford as done by Clann Tartan.
Documentation for clothing worn with Clann Tartan.
Reconstructing History. This is the first place to look if you want to get it right.
Matthew Newsome's articles on the history of Highland Dress. He is the curator of the Scottish Tartans Museum in Franklin, North Carolina.
Echna's Celtic Re-Enactments. For a much earlier period, but interesting.
One of my other interests is traditional woodworking with hand tools. Many of the techniques and tools are "period" for my reenactment activities.
Jas. Townsend and Son, Inc. Home Page. Slightly "out of period" for me, but I keep going back there. Extensive selection, good prices, fast shipping, and good customer service.
Smoke and Fire. Similar to Townsend. I have not bought from them quite as often, but I have never had a bad experience there.
