501 Corporation About the Class

The 501 Corporation is a graduate level course designed to provide a classroom-laboratory experience in the Sport and Recreation Administration in affiliation with the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University.

The Sport Administration 501 Corporation was devised to give students, intent on becoming involved professionally with the administration of an organization or program, an opportunity to observe, participate and gain valuable experience in the operation and conduct of both profit and non-profit organizations. Through active involvement in the design and management of the Sport Administration 501 Corporation, the students are able to gain practical experience, understanding and exposure in the field of and recreation administration. Moreover, the Sport Administration 501 Corporation members accept the responsibility of performing many self-generated tasks, such as university and community service, fundraising to support charity projects and many other activities integrally involved in the structure of any 501 Corporation. By participation in the Sport Administration 501 Corporation, the class members expand their skill and knowledge in communication, public relation, decision making, program and organizational management, advertising and financial management. Thus, this experience in corporate administration allows students to refine and apply concepts learned in the sport and recreation classroom to practical, real and corporate affairs. Biology has the "fetal pig" for dissection, Chemistry has the test tube formula and the Administration of Sport and Recreation has the "Sport Administration 501 Corporation."
