UNIVERSITY of MINNESOTA 2007 FALL CLASSIC HANDBALL TOURNAMENT
2007 Fall Classic Handball Photos
The University of Minnesota 2007 Fall Handball Classic Singles Handball Tournament was hosted at the University of Minnesota Rec Center November 16th and 17th. The Rec Center has 10 glass back wall courts which rank as some of the best handball courts in the handball world. Entered were 25 University of Minnesota novice players currently enrolled in the U of M one credit handball classes. In addition, 10 alumni of the handball classes played. Mankato State University also entered two women and four men students.
The 2008 USHA Collegiate Handball Championships will be hosted at Missouri State University, February 20-24, 2008. We hope to see several of these novice players play in their first collegiate tournament. Indications are there will be about 15 University of Minnesota handball players (men and women) going to the collegiate tournament with coaches Matt Hiber and Jim Carlson.
Thank you to Tournament Director Matt Johnson and the Rec Center staff for a job well done. Matt is the new Coordinator of Court Sports at the U of Minnesota and this was Matt’s first shot at directing a handball tournament. Matt also played in his first handball tourney and is attending Matt Hiber’s evening handball class. Thank you to Ron Causton for volunteering to help Matt Hiber and Jim Carlson teach the handball classes and for being there to help our student players during the tournament.
Matt Hiber (U of M) defended his string of championships in the open division winning in two games over Joe Hagen (Mpls.) 21-18,21-5. In the second game Matt’s serve took over acing several serves right and left while other serves produced weak returns. In the semis Joe Hagen had a very good two game win over Pete Crouser (current Minnesota State Champion), 21-16,21-9.
The A Singles had a five player round robin with Tim Fichtel (St. Paul) first and Steve Tamminga (St. Paul) second. Matt Langhorst (Duluth student) joined U of M alumni Joe VanThomme and Tim Kappes.
The B/C final found Josiah Hakala (U of M) battled leg cramps and shoulder injury to overcome Andy Steinke (U of M) 21-16,21-16. Both have gone to two collegiate tournaments with the U of Minnesota handball team and plan to go to their third collegiate in February.
The Men’s Novice had 20 players who have only been playing handball for two months along with 11 year old Tyler Stoffel (Mankato). Tyler has lots of handball experience but finally has grown physically to be able to compete with and beat college age players. Novice winner Kevin Lammi beat Tyler in the semis and paid Tyler the complement that he was the “best” player he played in the tournament. In the final Keven Lammi (U of M) beat Mike Bauer (U of M) 21-6,21-4.
Leah Betcher (U of M) won the Women’s division over Erica Balasko (U of M) 21-12, 21-1) after each had long three game wins in the semis. We thank Mankato State players Kayla Ashland and Amber Moon for entering and we hope to see them at the collegiate tourney along with our U of Minnesota veteran collegiate women.

2006 U of M FALL HANDBALL SINGLES RESULTS
The University of Minnesota Fall Handball Classic Singles Handball Tournament was hosted at the U of M Rec Center on the 10 glass back wall courts on November 17th and 18th. The B and C divisions were combined, as were the 50+ Golden Masters and 60+ Super Master divisions. There were 21 U of M students entered mostly in the Women’s, Novice and B/C divisions. The 21 are all current or former students of the University of Minnesota one credit handball classes. For more information on the U of M Handball Club and classes go to the web site: http://home.comcast.net/~gopherhandball/.
Matt Hiber (U of M) prevailed in the open division in a tough two game match with Pete Crouser (St. Paul) 21-17,21-7. Matt and Pete, former pro tour players, have won the Fall Classic open division for the last several years.
In the A Singles final, Tim Kappes (U of M) came out over Tim Fichtel (St. Paul) 21-14,21-16). Tim Kappes has moved up from the B/C final last year. Joe Van Thomme (U of M) also moved up from the B/C and won the conny over Steve Tamminga (St. Paul).
In the B/C final, Morgan Stevens (ex U of Florida collegiate) beat Ryan Tonolli (Wausau, Wisc) 21-12,21-15.
In the Novice final, Mike Tschida (U of M) beat Mike Petefish (U of M) 21-15,21-19. Both are currently in the U of Minnesota handball classes and both Mikes showed handball skills and sportsmanship that made us U of M handball instructors extremely proud.
The Women’s division winner of a round robin was Carrie Barjenbruch (U of M). All the women’s players were from the U of Minnesota.

2005 U of M FALL HANDBALL SINGLES RESULTS
The University of Minnesota Fall Handball Classic Singles Handball Tournament was hosted at the U of M Rec Center on the 10 glass back wall courts on November 18th and 19th. The entries were down from the previous year so the B and C divisions were combined, as were the 50+ Golden Masters and 60+ Super Master divisions. There were 28 U of M students entered mostly in the Womens, Novice and B/C divisions. The 28 are all current or former students of the University of Minnesota one credit handball classes.
Matt Hiber (U of M) once again prevailed in the open division but the final was a very tough tie breaker match with Mike Gustafson (Mpls) 15-21,21-17,11-6. It was reminiscent of the 2005 State of Minnesota singles final last spring in which Matt won a tie breaker win over Pete Crouser 20-21,21-17,11-9. Currently Minnesota has a good pool of top singles handball players in Matt Hiber, Pete Crouser, Mike Gustafson, Joe Hagen, Andy Nett, Jeff Ryan and 19 year old U of M freshman Will Hutchinson working hard to move up the ladder.
In the A Singles final, Brian Coonce (St Paul) came out over all the younger guys in a tie breaker 12-21,21-11,11-7 victory over Erik Seiberlich (St Paul). Lets hear it for the experience of the veteran players!
In the B/C final, Tom Nett (Winona) outlasted Tim Kappes (U of M) in a long tie breaker 21-17,17-21,11-3. Tom is a freshman at LaCrosse State and learned handball down in Winona in the family handball wars with his dad John and brother Andy. Tim is a graduate of the U of M and is in his 5th year getting his teaching certificate. Tim was introduced to handball in the U of M handball classes spring 2004.
In the Novice final, Josiah Hakala (U of M) beat Brandon Borgen (U of M) 21-17,21-9. Josiah is a U of M freshman and Brandon a U of M junior. Both currently are enrolled in the U of M handball classes. Even though they have only played handball for a little over two months, both Josiah and Brandon show handball skills and sportsmanship which would make any beginning handball player envious.
The Women’s division was won by Edy Kowalkowski (U of M) over Kristi Kotenberg 21-3, 21-20. Both are seniors at the U of Minnesota. Edy has played in two Collegiate, two U of M Fall Classics and two Minnesota State Handball Tournaments while Kristi has played in one of each.
