Although a Pennsylvanian, West Point graduate Josiah Gorgas and his family followed Alabama into the Confederacy where he used his training and skills to build an extraordinary system of acquisition, manufacture, and distribution of arms and ammunition. Largely thanks to Gen. Gorgas, Confederate troops never lacked weapons even though often short of everything else. In recognition of his service, Gorgas rose from major to brigadier general by the end of the War. After the War, he joined the new University of the South in Tennessee, and in 1878 became President of the University of Alabama. Ill heath caused his retirement after only one year and Gen. Gorgas died on May 15th, 1883 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery.
