Maintenance Kit Essentials
There are the essential items that are needed in a fountain pen maintenance kit. Some of these are regular use items such as bottled ink and some are for cleaning or restoration.
Polishing Cloth - Used to maintain the luster of fine Fountain Pens without buffing. Hand buffing is the only way to maintain the luster of fountain pens. A polishing wheel or polishing compound are too harsh and can ruin the pens. These are available through a variety of locations including on-line fountain pen retailers. See the Web Links Section. Rubber Grip Pads - Used for separating stubborn pen parts and opening vintage ink bottles. These can easily be made from an old bicycle inner tube. Cut a size of about 2" x 3". Bottled Ink - The essential ingredient of the Vintage Fountain Pen. No one worth their salt uses a cartridge; they at least use bottled ink and a converter. Ink used for a fountain pen or a dip pen. See the notes else where in this guide for information on how to choose ink and inks to avoid with vintage pens. Feed Cleaner Brush - Used for removing ink residue or sediment from the feed. This can easily be made from a clean discarded tooth brush. Nib Flush Bulb - Used to thoroughly flush ink residue or sediment from the interior of the pen or the feed. The blue squeeze bulbs that hospitals use to clean a babies nose works the best here. Sac Cement - Used to secure the sac in one's restoration projects. This is amber shellac. It is available at most hardware stores. A small amount will last for years. Sac Cement Brush - Used to delicately place the correct amount of cement in the exact location to properly secure the sac and to keep ones hands clean. A simple disposable brush is the torn end of a paper match.
