Lawrence County,

Indiana

Located deep in the rolling wooded hills of southern Indiana, beautiful Lawrence County, Indiana is known as the limestone capital of the world. Indeed, the Indiana Limestone Institute is based here, and Indiana oolitic limestone from the quarries here is on major structures throughout the eastern 2/3 of the country, such as the Empire State Building in New York City and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Bedford is the largest city, and county seat of Lawrence County. On the southern edge of the County is the town of Mitchell.

Among many recreational resources, Lawrence County offers Spring Mill State Park with it's pioneer village and Bluespring Caverns, which is the longest cave in Indiana with 20 miles of channels. Bluespring Caverns features the underground Myst'ry River, where guest can take a boat tour to see blind cavefish and crayfish. The Avoca Fish Hatchery hatches a wide variety of fish for Indiana lakes, ponds and rivers. From covered bridges to the Persimmon Festival, and from the Mitchell Opera House to the Turner Doll Factory, there's a lot to see in scenic Lawrence County. And, Mitchell, Indiana is an exciting find for antique hunters.

No county in the United States, except for Lawrence County, Indiana, has given three astronauts to the space program, including Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, Ken Bowersox and Charlie Walker.
