    • Fifth Child. NOTE: The 1910 U. S. Census in Orange County, Indiana indicated that Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Hickman had given birth to five children by that time, with four of these children surviving. We do not know anything about this other child. Even this child's two surviving siblings (Harold & Rhea, who were born after the birth and death this child) do not know the identity of this child. We only know that this child must have died in infancy or childhood. It is likely that this child did not live long since he or she is not known to surviving siblings.

And, here are some interesting family history tidbits ...

TIDBIT: The Ellen REYNOLDS mentioned above (who married Jesse Charles HICKMAN) and Ora REYNOLDS (who married Jesse's sister, Mable Marie HICKMAN Reynolds), were sister and brother themselves. So, the children of Jesse Charles HICKMAN and Mable Marie HICKMAN REYNOLDS were double-first cousins.

Twins in the Hickman Family

  • The Carolyn (HICKMAN) BAXTER and Allen HICKMAN, mentioned above as children of Jesse Charles HICKMAN, were twins. Allen also married a twin.

  • The Jason Matthew REYNOLDS and Jeremy REYNOLDS, mentioned above as children of Larry Dale REYNOLDS, were twins.

  • The Dana Ann LEE and Brianna Jean LEE, mentioned above as children of Robert Wesley LEE, were twins.

ROOTS ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

  • We know that there are Hickmans in both England and Germany. My grandfather always said that our American Hickmans came from England.

Unfortunately, Hickman is one of the lines for which I have not traced back across the Atlantic.

But, I am intrigued by this fascinating e-mail message from my new cyber friend in England, Mark Ward-Pointing, who is also a Hickman descendant, through his maternal line. His e-mail address is Geneahick1@aol.com. Here is a quote from his intriguing 16 March 2002 e-mail message:

Hickman is not a common surname beyond the area known as the Black Country, where it seems to originate. The Black Country is historically the birthplace of the industrial revolution and has a character of its own. It is located in the West Midlands in central England, to the west of Birmingham, and takes its name from the smoky, grimy atmosphere created by the many small factories and foundries which were sited there in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

The Black Country is really a collection of large and small towns which became one large industrial area - Wolverhampton, Walsall, Dudley, West Bromwich, Tipton, Quarry Bank, Gornal and Halesowen being the main towns. I know that my Hickman family came from Wolverhampton. If you wanted to trace ancestors back to England, this would be the likeliest place to find them.

Unfortunately your ancestors would have migrated to America before public records of births, marriages and deaths began here (1836), but they would probably be in church records somewhere. Does your family have links with what we call non-conformist churches - Wesleyans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists etc.? Many Black Country people did. My Hickman family however were Catholics!

TIDBIT: The Isaac HICKMAN mentioned above (my Great-Great-Grandfather) served in the Union Army during the United States Civil War, and was a prisoner of war at Andersonville prison camp. He became ill during this imprisonment and subsequently died in a military hospital. He is buried in a veteran's cemetery in Evansville, Indiana.

  • Isaac HICKMAN (Born 1821) was a Private in Company F of the 59th Indiana Regiment in the Union Army during the U. S. Civil War. He enrolled in the Army on 03 December 1861 in Valeene, Orange County, Indiana. He enrolled for three years, despite being 43-years old at the time. Isaac was enrolled by Captain Welman.

Isaac joined the Union Army with his 2nd son, Josiah, four months after Isaac's oldest son (Charles) enrolled. Isaac's youngest son (John) enrolled the following year.

Isaac was mustered into the Army on 11 Feburary 1862 in Gosport, Indiana by Major Carpenter.

These Military Records (from the Indiana State Archives) describe Isaac as having black hair, black eyes, dark complexion, 5 feet 10 1/4 inches tall, a farmer, born in Orange County, North Carolina.

TIDBIT: Isaac HICKMAN's three sons, Charles Sr. (my Great-Grandfather), Josiah and John, were also all in the Union Army during the U. S. Civil War.

  • Charles Ambrose HICKMAN, Sr. was a Private in Company A of the 38th Indiana Regiment of the Union Army during the U. S. Civil War. He enrolled in the Army on 20 August 1861 in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana. He was enrolled by Capt. Wheeler.
Charles was the first of the HICKMAN's to enroll in the Union Army, although his father and brother (Josiah) enrolled four months later, and Charles' other brother (John) joined Charles' Regiment the following year.

Charles was mustered into the Army on 17 September 1861 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana by Capt. Gilman.

Charles Ambrose HICKMAN, Sr.'s yougest brother, John Wesley HICKMAN, latered enrolled in the same Company and Regiment as Charles, while their other brother (Josiah) and their father (Issac) were both in Company F of the 59th Indiana Regiment.

Like his father and brothers, Charles enrolled in the Army for 3 years.

These Military Records (from the Indiana State Archives) describe Charles as having dark hair, brown eyes, dark complexion, being 22 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches tall, a farmer, born in Orange County, Indiana.

Charles Ambrose HICKMAN, Sr. was mustered out of the Army on 17 September 1864 in Atlanta, Georgia.

  • Josiah HICKMAN was a Private in Company F of the 59th Indiana Regiment in the Union Army during the U. S. Civil War. He enrolled in the Army on 03 December 1861 in Valeene, Orange County, Indiana. He was enrolled by Captain Welman.

He signed up with his father, Isaac HICKMAN.

Like his father, he signed on for 3 years.

Josiah was mustered into the Army on 11 Feburary 1862 in Gosport, Indiana by Major Carpenter.

These Military Records (from the Indiana State Archives) describe Josiah as having black hair, black eyes, dark complexion, being 18 years of age, 5 feet 8 1/4 inches tall, a farmer, born in Orange County, Indiana.

Josiah HICKMAN was mustered out of the Army on 11 May 1865.

  • John Wesley HICKMAN was a Private in Company A of the 38th Indiana Regiment in the Union Army during the U. S. Civil War. He enrolled in the Army on 12 December 1862 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. He was enrolled by Captain Fonts.

John Wesley HICKMAN enrolled into the same Company and Regiment in which his older brother, Charles Ambrose Hickman, Sr., was serving.

He signed on for three years.

John Wesley HICKMAN was mustered into the U. S. Army on 24 December 1862 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was mustered in by Lt. Col. Triffin.

These Military Records (from the Indiana State Archives) describe John as having black hair, gray eyes, dark complexion, being 18 years of age, 5 feet 3 tall, a farmer, born in Orange County, Indiana.

John Wesley HICKMAN was transferred to Veterans Reserves Corps. (V.R.C.). These were Federal units which did things like guard railroad yards, arsenals, etc.

TIDBIT: According to Phillip Jay HICKMAN's Uncle (who is my third cousin, a fellow great-great-grandson of Isaac HICKMAN):

Our HICKMAN family, as former Southerners from North Carolina, were devout members of the Democrat political party, even when they moved north to live in Indiana --- until Isaac HICKMAN died of illness that developed while he was a prisoner of war in the infamous Andersonville prisoner of war camp, during the U. S. Civil War.

At that time the Republican Party of President Lincoln carried the banner of the northern union, while the Democratic party was prominent in the old South. (In contrast to today, when the Democratice party prevails in many of the old northern states, while the Republican party has grown in the American South.)

The HICKMAN family blamed the Democrats for Issac HICKMAN's death, and Isaac HICKMAN's children all became devout Republicans after that.

This lets us know a little bit about the personality of our HICKMAN ancestors -- They were strong-willed people who did not forgive the South or the Democrats for the death of Isaac HICKMAN.

This also suggests that the HICKMAN family members had intense loyalty toward each other.

More samples of early HICKMAN personality ... We can see that dry flippant HICKMAN humor in the U. S. Census records:

    • In the 1900 U. S. Census in South East Township, Orange County, Indiana:

Josiah HICKMAN described his 28-year old step-son as his "Servant."

The Census worker, being another HICKMAN relative (also named, Josiah HICKMAN), had no problem writing exactly what information his HICKMAN kin gave to him, so poor Hamilton H. HAMMOND is recorded for all time as being the "Servant" of his step-father.

    • Similarly, in the 1880 U. S. Census in South East Township, Orange County, Indiana:

Angeletta (Hickman) Easter (my great-great-grand aunt), gave the occupation of her step-son, Stephen J. Easter, as "Loafing."

Again, this blunt response is recorded for all times in the U. S. Census Records.

MULTIPLE RELATIONSHIPS ALERT:

  • The Joel Franklin Denton who married Mary Elizabeth Fears was a cousin of Roxey Emiline Denton, who also had a brother named Joel Franklin Denton, and whose son, Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr., married another Mary Elizabeth Fears (the daughter of the above-named Jesse David Fears, Jr. and niece of the first Mary Elizabeth Fears.)

So, my grandparents, Charles Ambrose Hickman, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Hickman, had cousins in common.

My grandfather was second cousins to the children of Joel Franklin Denton and Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Denton, because his mother and Joel were first cousins.

My grandmother was first cousins to those same children, because she was the niece of Joel's wife, Mary Elizabeth (Fears) Denton.

TIDBIT: The Roxey Emiline (DENTON) HICKMAN mentioned above was a great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter of The Rev. Richard Denton (born 1603 in Yorkshire, England, and the founder of the first Presbyterian Church in North America.)

TIDBIT: This Roxey Emiline (DENTON) HICKMAN was herself a minister in the Church of the Brethren. (She also smoked a corn-cob pipe.)

TIDBIT: "John DENTON, wife and Miss DENTON," are listed as residents at Ruddle's Fort at the time of the 1780 attack by the British and Native America warriers. I am a direct descendant of this John Denton's brother, Thomas Denton.

This John Denton was great-grand uncle of this Roxey Emiline (DENTON) HICKMAN.

So this John Denton at Ruddles Fort was my great-great-great-great-grand-uncle. (See my DENTON Web page and my Ruddles Fort Massacre Web page.)

TIDBIT: This Roxey Emiline (DENTON) HICKMAN's aunt by marriage was Elizabeth (Lincoln) Denton, who was a first cousin of President Abraham Lincoln.

So, I am my a great-great-grand-nephew to the husband of President Abraham Lincoln's first cousin.
