Photo on left shows my great-grandfather, Simon Elias Routh, with his mother, Barbara Ann (SUMMERS) Routh (on the left), and his sister, Elizabeth Alice (Routh) Dobson (on the right, in the white dress).

JOHN SUMMERS, my great-great-great-grandfather, was born in Ohio in about 1810. He married a woman named, Elizabeth Ann. This "Ann" was born in about 1811 in Ohio. John and Ann moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana sometime after their marriage. John and Ann had at least four children, born in the following order: Jane Summers, Barbara Ann Summers, Michael Summers and Silas Summers, according to the 1850 U. S. Census in Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Barbara Ann SUMMERS. my great-great-grandmother, was born 20 March 1841 in Ohio. On 05 March 1863 Barbara married Benjamin Hopkins Routh in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Benjamin and Barbara Ann (SUMMERS) Routh had eight children: John Daniel Routh, Jesse Michael Routh, David Ira Routh, Simon Elias Routh, Elizabeth Alice (Routh) Dobson, Francis Leroy Routh, Nora Estella Routh and Orval Clifton Routh.

Three of these children (John, Francis and Nora) died in their youth.

Benjamin Hopkins Routh died on 05 August 1897.

Barbara Ann (SUMMERS) Routh then lived in Frankfort, in neighboring Clinton County, Indiana, for a while, per the 1913 Frankfort, Indiana city directory.

Barbara later had a second marriage to a man whose surname was Grubb.

Barbara died on 25 March 1915 in Indiana. She and Benjamin are buried in Union Cemetery in Clarks Hill, Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

Benjamin and Barbara's son, Simon Elias Routh, was my great-grandfather.

I received the following informative e-mail message from Paul Summers:

Anyway the information that I have I got from some of my relatives still living in Indiana and from the census records and the Tippecanoe Co. Historical Society.

I am not sure where John was born as the 1850 Lauramie Twp. Tippecanoe Co. IN census lists him as being 38 years old and born in Ohio, but the 1860 census lists him as 48 and being born in Virginia he died before 1870 as he is not on that census and Elizabeth Ann is living with her son Michael my great grandfather and your Barbara's brother. Also I am thinking that they may have lived in a different county when they died as the Tippecanoe Co. Historical Society could not find a record of their deaths or burial. Maybe they lived the last few years in Clinton Co. as I had relatives there. Also in 1850 Elizabeth Ann is listed as being 38 born in Ohio, 1860 as 48 born Ohio and 1870 as 58 born in Ohio so looks like both of them were born in 1812 and she definitely was born in Ohio.

Elizabeth Ann Shoemakers father was Daniel Shoemaker born April 1790 in VA he died 14 Dec. 1847 in Tippecanoe Co. IN and is buried in Wea Twp. Tippecanoe Co. in the Shoemaker Cemetery. He married Barbara ? about 1812. She was born about 1793, died 12 Jan. 1832 in Tippecanoe Co. and is buried in the Shoemaker Cemetery, Wea Twp. Tippecanoe Co. IN

Michael Summers was born 10 Oct. 1792 in Rockingham Co. Virginia and died 4 Nov. 1848 in Tippecanoe Co. IN he married Mary Shultz 22 Nov. 1810 in Rockingham Co. VA. She was born 2 Sept. 1790 probably in VA died 17 Sept. 1834 Tippecanoe Co. IN They are both buried in the Summers Cemetery in Lauramie Twp. Tippecanoe Co. IN on a farm they used to own. I have some pictures that were copied and sent to me that are not too good of tombstones. They moved to Ross Co. Ohio about 1811/1812 and all 10 children were born there. Then about 1829 moved to Tippecanoe Co. IN with all the children. John married Elizabeth Ann in Tippecanoe Co. 13 March 1834. I have more information on the other 9 children if you are interested.

We are 3rd cousins once removed.
