Powerdyne Install Check List
The RKSport/Powerdyne kit
comes with everything you need including instructions. Um, well…here is a checklist that you can
start while your new kit is in the mail.
1)
Start
filling up with Premium (High Octane) fuel.
Whatever the highest octane grade in your area is what you want to
use…always. Don’t forget you have a
super charger now and are running much higher compression because of it.
2)
The
RKSport instructions tell you to re-gap your spark plugs to .035. You can do that but it is recommended by
many veteran FI runners to use colder (than stock) heat range plugs. NGK-TR6 plugs are two heat ranges colder and
are very popular with the L36 FI crowd.
Order some and gap them to .035.
3)
Plan
on using the improved belt routing developed by John_D. This means you will have to spend some time
clearancing oil filter neck. Also, if
you plan on running a smaller pulley than the 3.12” 6psi pulley you may need a
shorter serpentine belt such as a 103”.
The belt that comes with your RKSport Powerdyne should work with the new
belt routing and the 6psi pulley.
4)
Figure
out which PCV re routing system you will be using and do it before you install
the blower. Blocking the TB PCV hole
and adding a valve cover breather is the easiest to perform and is also the
easiest to de-mod and return to stock.
Either way you will need a TB gasket, threaded plug, etc., so start
locating those parts now.
5)
Get
better instructions than the ones provided by RKSport. The picture quality is ZERO. Very disappointing. The famous and very high quality mcaanda
instructions are hosted on this site.
Get them. While you are at it
get my mcaanda addendum as well. It has
some corrections and additional info concerning the main blower bracket
mounting and the tensioner pulley bracket mounting spacers among other things
that will take some of the guesswork of the blower install.
6)
Do
some research and find out the basics of a forced induction setup vs. a
naturally aspirated engine. Get some
basic understanding of what is going on with your new supercharged engine if
you are new to forced induction.
Improperly running a super charger or turbo can ruin your engine….big
time….game over.
7)
Seriously
consider adding gauges to monitor your new set up. The most important gauge is probably Fuel Pressure. You want to know that the FMU is working
while the engine is under boost. If the
FMU is not hooked up correctly to the engine vacuum lines it will not
function. If the FMU does not function
then you may very well lean out the engines air/fuel ratio under boost
conditions. If you took the advice
provided in step 6 of this checklist then you know that LEAN under BOOST can
lead to BOOM.
8)
Don’t
forget you will need a pulley puller. A
standard 2 claw works fine.
9)
Severe
over tightening of the serpentine belt may cause premature failure of the other
accessories running off the belt. You
want the belt tight…but beware that your water pump may fail, etc. if you go
real crazy with tightening the belt.
