Replace Internal Drive Belt on Powerdyne BD11A

If your Powerdyne blower unit suddenly fails to put out positive boost and also stops emitting its normal (subtle) supercharger whine you may have a broken internal Kevlar belt.  You can change the internal belt yourself with a few simple tools.  If the bearings are bad that is a different issue all together.

Replace internal drive belt:

1.  Remove main drive pulley and spray WD40 around the cylinder at the base plate.

2.  Unscrew head unit with hex drive.

3.  Use rubber mallet and tap around the mating plates. (Or use a small piece of wood placed against the mating plates and hammer it.)

4.  Pull straight up.

5.  Now it should look like the center picture above.

6.  There might be a bunch of rubber debris inside.  Clean it thoroughly and remove the old belt.

7.  Check the two bearings that are visible.  Run your finger around them.  If there's a goo or puss like substance on them it means they are starting to run dry and may need to be replaced right away.

8.    You will have to use a pulley puller and remove the small bearing.  (It’s the one in the right

side in the above pic…it is on top of the small gear.)  This is a very important step and you could damage the blower if you remove or set the bearings incorrectly.  Once the small bearing is off you can slip the new internal belt on.

   9.  Replace the small bearing.  Sometimes when I set bearings or gearless pulley’s I first get them started by lightly tapping with a soft hammer such as a rubber mallet or I may use a piece of wood doweling between the pulley/bearing and the hammer.  When I think it is going on straight I then might use an appropriately sized SOCKET placed in the center of the bearing/pulley and tap the bearing in place.  If you have access to some specialty tools such as a press then so much the better.  Please note that this step is the most crucial part about replacing the internal belt and the method of setting bearings and pulleys with a hammer is not suggested, but it is how I have installed bearings and pulleys in the past.  If you don’t feel comfortable performing this repair job to your supercharger head unit there are many places you can ship off your Powerdyne to have it professionally serviced.   Check out my PAGE on repairing/overhauling the gears in the BD11A head unit for more information on sending the unit out for service.

Now that you know HOW to change the internal belt here is the part number.

Gates powergrip HTD3755M.  It can be bought on Ebay for $40.00.

I have not had to repair my Powerdyne yet…knock on polished aluminum…  You all can thank Mighty Thor and ssms5411 for sharing this information.  Thanks again guys.  G
