JHERETIC
In 1994, Raven Software changed the gaming world by taking ID software's Doom gaming engine and enhancing it to bring HERETIC to the world. An immersive game with then-unmatched atmosphere and action, HERETIC quickly became a favorite then - and even today.
At the DOOMSDAY website, people like myself have undertaken the task of bringing the sprite based monsters of this medieval game into the world of full 3D. The task of doing this was daunting to some since the Heretic monsters are very unique and presented several problems that were daunting... to some. Since HERETIC has a special place in my heart, I took up the challenge of bringing these fearsome beasts to life.
Below are pictures of what the HERETIC monsters looked like before.... and after... mixed with excepts from my brother Nathan's short story "Initium Ultio - A Heretic Tale"

GOLEMS

"....more than any of D'sparil's other minions, the Golems offended Corvus. Inside these monsters dwelt the souls of mortal men. They had given up their mortal bodies for bodies of stone to escape the bonds of flesh. But immortality came with a hidden price. The golems were bound to their masters, and could not act save at their behest. Thus imprisoned and enslaved, the Golems were filled with a rage that they could not turn on any save those their masters commanded. On they came like juggernauts, seemingly immune to the power of Corvus' elven wand...." Initium Ultio - p. 5 |

UNDEAD WARRIORS

"...the echoing breath of the undead reached Corvus' ears. Armored and tall they came at him, hurling great axes. These axes were evil mockeries of the power the Sidhe held over the aether, but the undead had not this power. Their power came as a gift from D'sparil - a vile manifestation of the potencies that dwelt outside the aether.... ... with horror Corvus realized he could see through some of the creatures as if they were smoky glass. Half of this world and half of the world outside were these abominations, strong and horrible. What dreadful past they had none but D'sparil could say. They held in their hands axes that were red..." WEREDRAGONS
|
||||||||||||||||
| "...The
air stank with the fetid odor like that of a pit of vipers. The terrible
den was filled with man-like creatures - tall and muscular but covered
with a green scale hide. Their hands and feet were grossly elongated and
ended with bone white claws. Short tails like serpents waved as they gnawed
on the mangled flesh of the villagers.
These
servants of D'Sparil resembled the fabled dragons of Parthoris that
had long since been destroyed or lost in great wars with the Sidhe.
The faces stretched out in serpentine snouts filled with razor fangs.
When the monster exhaled there were great belches of red flame...." Initium Ultio - "A Heretic Tale" |

SABRECLAWS

"...In
wonder he stared at them, for without a doubt they came from the realm
Outside - foul demons in mortal shapes suited to reflect their own inner
damnation. They had segmented bodies covered in chitinous hides of green
and brown. The creatures moved with unearthly speed, and swarmed on any
enemy in terrible numbers.
These creatures had no other purpose except to perform slaughter. Their arms had no hands with which to live or work. Instead their arms ended with axe-like blades and with these they would butcher their victims until nothing remained but ribbons of flesh...." Initium

IRON LICHE

| "...It
was a huge statue, or sculpted piece of metal in the likeness of a Sidhe
skull. It was dull and no light reflected from its grey surface, but it
was smooth as if polished. Its rictus was shut and its eyes were hollow
and dark. An iron diadem rested atop its crown, decorated with gold and
jewels.
A grown man standing before the skull would have barely reached the eyes. The creature floated through the air as if held by invisible stings. Powerful magic it wielded and it held power over fire, ice and wind. The Iron Liche they were called, and they were the lieutenants and captains over D'Sparil's lesser armies..." Initium

MAULOTAURS

"...These
were the greatest and most terrible of D'Sparil's captains. Huge and bestial,
but filled with a horrible purpose and cruel intelligence, placed in awful
forms like bulls of the field. Thrice man height they were, and in their
front arms they wielded great mauls.
Of such great power and potency were these spirits that they could channel greater power directly from the realm Outside. At times they would stomp the earth with their huge legs and create great waves of terrible heat that would incinerate all in their path. When close, they would charge their enemies to crush and rend. So strong was their bond to the realm outside that they could endure punishment great enough to destroy whole armies and yet live on..."
