barred owl ~ where we can see talons ~ digital examples, with some technical specs:

Jan. 3rd 2004, almost 3 pm, some light over the ridge onto the tree top  ~
 the original was           1/250th SEC    f/6.3          ISO = 200
"pattern"metering mode            daylight white balance            with an 81a filter            no flash
Canon Rebel digital camera,  Tamron lens  zoomed out to  300 mm  (+plus digital fudge factor)

the whole picture ~                 from this angle we sometimes see claws                fully zoomed lenses will magnify camera shake
original was saved in the camera as a JPEG at                 3072  by  2048  pixels at   180 ppi  resolution                 file size 2.79 M
if that were printed as-is, it would be             image size   17"   by   11.3"             and image in  monitor display takes up   >18 Meg
NOTE that  this example,  representing the whole original, is already adjusted  for brightness &c,   and remade as a JPEG,
so this  file is   750   by   500 pixels,  at   96  ppi,  a file size like   77.7 K
(giving approx.   7.8"   by   5.2"  and consuming just over   1 M   when displayed at 1 to 1)
adjusted original shot

( a longer telephoto lens, probably needing a tripod also,
would produce a better composed image ... )

cropped to the more useful part of the image:

(where it's easier to see the two claws and one toe)

makes a new image size of    1050   by   1400   pixels,
 at   180 ppi
 for a file size about   8.4 M
(giving about 5.8"   by   7.8",   about   4.2 M    on screen)

NOTE this demo image was also sharpened &c, and remade
to 450   by   600   pixels,  at   96   ppi,
 a file size about   86.1 K
(giving aout   4.7"   by   6.25",   about   791 K   on screen)
 'cropped to the story'

 very close up
At this point, cropping very close-up,
(this version is also further adjusted for what
clarity and  correction I could still have)
but I could  not do much more because
all remaining pixels are already at
 about this resolution ...

we retain    420   by   420   pixels, at   180 ppi
This image adjusted and remade for a web page is
  420  pixels square at   96 ppi ,  file size   71.5 K

It's approx. the best I get with this equipment,
hand held against a tree at this angle & distance,
for clarity of claws, toes and feathers, without
 finally just degrading the image.

Over time, I remake my owl photos at the
three angles around this tree, so by now I will
have at least several more examples of the more
focused shots to choose from ~ such as:

other examples, where we can see claws,
cropped and adjusted and re-JPEGed ...

 from a photo made   Christmas Eve's Day 2003 ...
  125th sec , f/8 , ISO = 200
everything else the same except with a red enhancer filter
and this one had an exposure compensation of -0.3 stops ...
 from a photo made   New Year's Eve's Day 2003 ...
 1/400th sec , f/6.3 , ISO = 400
either red enhancer filter or, likely an 81a filter
both these representations also cropped, enhanced, JPEGed
 day before Christmas
 day before New Year
closer up ~ such as it is
Obviously I can barely crop
to enlarge any more ~ plus
this image is also further
false-sharpened as much as
these remains would allow.
