Professional Information

My business card says that I'm the editor of the University of Washington alumni magazine, called Columns.

Columns Magazine

Click on the sample cover to see the Web version of the magazine. All 1995 through December 2006 issues are on-line. There are also 11 of my favorite features from 1990-1995 in a special Editor's Choice page in the Archives section. For those of your interested in the antics of a campus editors' listserve group, see The Cele Garrett Award Page .

Columns Magazine I am also the author of the book, The University of Washington Experience, published by Documenatry Media and available from the University Book Store.

For more information on the University of Washington, click UW Home Page. For information about Seattle, try the Internet Seattle page or Seattle Traffic. Yes, the traffic is bad and getting worse.

Did I mention the bad weather? See current conditions below:

Personal Information

In 2006 I completed my section hikes of the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington State--a four year journey of about 500 miles. Visit Tom's 2006 PCT Trip to read all about the last section. Visit Tom's PCT Pages to read about my other PCT trips and information about the Pacific Crest Trail.

Though I am the editor of the University of Washington alumni magazine, I am a graduate of another UW -- the University of Wisconsin. Click on Wisconsin Home Page to see what my alma mater is up to. Being from Wisconsin, I have to give a plug to my favorite NFL team, the original Superbowl champs, the Green Bay Packers. Of course, I also have local sports favorites, particularly the Seattle Mariners, even though the 2006 season was a disaster.

I have a wonderful wife and two charming children (I'm NOT kidding). Click Tom's Family for a color picture of Tom, Julie, Emily and Ted. Once upon a time, Julie and I lived in Paris. Here are some pictures of the family on a trip to the Southwest. Julie and I had the honor of hosting an alumni tour to Greece. For a look at the trip, visit UWAA Alumni College in Greece. The fifth family member is our Labrador mix dog--Daisy. Here is a picture of Daisy with Emily. And here's another picture of Daisy with Ted.

My interests include reading, movies, hiking/backpacking, and weight lifting.

For the incredible film archive originally developed in Cardiff, Wales, but now a commercial site [sigh--the fate of everything good on Internet], click on Movie Archive. For some personal tips on hiking and backpacking in the Northwest, including links to National Forest Service pages about trails in western Washington, a long file of posts to rec.backcountry about how to avoid blisters, and even color pictures of me during trips on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Bechler River valley in Yellostone and the Continental Divide Trail in Montana, click on Tom's Hiking Page and on Tom's Pacific Crest Trail Page.

Join the 580,000 other readers who have already taken a look at my archive of weight-lifting posts from the old misc.fitness newsgroup, its offspring, misc.fitness.weights, and several weight-lifting listserves in cyberspace, Weighty Matters-- An Archive of the Best of the Net on Lifting Weights.
