There is a William Callan just outside Ramelton in the 1857
Griffiths Valuation. He is listed next to an Edward Callan and
associated with a field in Kilcreen. This field was purchased in 1909 by an Edward Callan who is still listed as the owner
today.
Edward and Roseanna Callan registered Roman Catholic births of seven children between 1880 and 1895, so
these guys may be Catholic and not related. But
William and Mary Callan registered Roman Catholic births of two children: Mary b. 21 Dec 1885, William b. 8
Jan 1889. The date for Mary matches a date we have from the Presbyterian record, so maybe some are recorded
twice. (source)
There is another William Callan in Donegal 1857, in the Parish of Templecarn.
There were seven William Callans born in Scotland between 1816 and 1856. One in 1827, three in 1840, one
in 1841, two in 1847

William Callan and Mary
McGroary married 30 May 1879 (source: Ramelton 1 Presbyterian Church)
(second source: Samuel Callan's birth certificate lists William Callan & Mary "McGroarty")
(third source: Margaret Callan's birth certificate lists William Callan & Mary "McGrory")
I have the civil marriage certificate from The General Register Office below.
At the time of marriage they lived in Ballygreen, parish Aughnish, co. Donegal (source: Marriage Cert).
Ballygreen is next to Gortaway (where Samuel claimed to be born on his Ship Manifest) and Fortstewart
(where Samuel was born).

Mary born abt 1855 (source: 1891 Scotland Census).
Father: Daniel McGroary (source: Civil Marriage Certificate)
Family moved to No 18 Clune Brae Fort, Port Glasgow, Co Renfrewshire, Scotland between 1888 and 1891 (per 1891 Census).
Family moved back to Ramelton area between 1893 and 1896 (per Samuel's birth cert).
Mary likely died in Maggie's birth 31 Dec 1898. Otherwise she probably died before 1901 since she is not on
the census.

| Mary Callan |
born 1 Aug 1879 (Ramelton 1 Pres Ch) Ballgreen (source: Paul) |
Assume died young because not on 1891 Census for Scotland. Would have been 11 if alive, so not likely
left in Ireland. Could have died between 1879 and 1891 in Ireland, or between 1888 and 1891 in
Scotland.
No record of Scotland death found, nor Irish record, so could be from a different family. 1901 Irish census
may show where she is.
Truly she must have died young if its true that they named another daughter Mary in 1885.

Not able to locate his birth record in Scotland.
Leaves the household between 1901 and 1911 (per Census) possibly to find work in Scotland. Immigrates to US
in 1912 from Liverpool on SS Ivernia. Heading to Walter McAdams in Afton, Dekalb, Illinois. No record of
him in US.
Uncle Johnny Callan went away but ended up back in Ramelton as a soldier of the British Army. He may
have joined up in Canada.
There hasnt been contact between him and the Jordans since maybe the 1950's.
John had two children before his first wife died. One is living. He remarried to Annie Doherty, but
she did not like kids.
In 2008 a Callan from England contacted a daughter of Mary Callan trying to trace his fathers
blood family as he had been placed in a children home when he was a baby. A connection was made and it transpired that
Jonny Callan was this Callan's great grandfather. The family was reunited with his Dad finding many half brothers and
sisters. (source: Viv)

Margaret Callan, born in Gortaway with witness Sarah Callan (of Gortaway). Father William Callan listed as
Labourer in Gortaway.
She later lived on Castle Street, Ramelton when she married John Jordan (b. 1892).
We have contact with the Jordan family.
The family went through a visit from the Black and Tans and later on they were evicted from Castle street
and forced to move to a 'new' house in Ramelton. They had three boys and two girls,
between Jan 1935 and Jun 1941.
The children's families are spread out over Malin (co Donegal), Toronto (Canada), Ramelton, Derry and
London.
One daughter, Mary K Jordan (Molly) was born Apr-Jun 1936, never married, and died 15 Nov 1974, age 38.
A son, Michael Jordan (Mickey) was born Apr-Jun 1941. Mickey stayed at home and went over and back to
Glasgow and Peterborough for various jobs, but primarily he stayed in Ramelton with his mother Margaret.
He lived on in the house in Ramelton until he died 18 Jul 2006.
John Jordan died soon after the move, 27 Mar 1968. Margaret died at age 90 (in 1990) and is buried in Ramelton.

Martha
McAdams
Birth: abt 1869 Scotland (source: 1901 & 1911 Irish Census), yet there is no record of a Martha McAdam(s)
born in scotland 1865-1875. Nor is there a record of her born in Donegal.
Possible: Martha McAdam, parents not given bt. 10/11/1867 (source: mcadamshistory.com)
Father may be "Robert McAdam, a shoemaker married Eliza Alcorn and lived at Bridge-end". "Robert b.
4/11/1855 died 23 Aug. 1911 age 45".
I have been contacted by GGG son of Robert who thinks this link is possible. (source: mcadamshistory.com)

Immigrates to Afton, Dekalb, Illinois sometime between 1901 and 1912 (before John Callan). Most likely
before 1911 since not on 1911 Irish Census. Draft card says he has blue eyes and black hair. In 1917 he was
working for Chauncy Watson in Afton. Chauncy Watson is on the 1910 US Census as born in Illinois abt 1890. His father, Lincoln Watson, was born
in Illinios abt 1865. No idea how Walter McAdams ended up in Dekalb.
Walter McAdams had two boys and three girls, two of which are still living and whom we are in contact with.

I have this comment from a relative of Martha McAdams:
"A James McAdams from Scotland apparently visited a Martha McAdams [could be Callan?] believed to be a sister in Ramelton right
up to 1960's. I haven't been able to trace him. There is also a big connection to the Alcorns in Ramelton."
(source: Damien)
Martha Callan married a Tommy Alcorn (from Fanad) and she is known througout the family as Aunt Cissie. They lived in
Derry all their lives. Cissie was famous for fostering kids on Irish Street, and got an MBE (Member British Empire) from the
Queen.

No. 15: John Callan's Immigration to US:
Arrival Date: 22 Feb 1912
Age: 24 years
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Irish
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ship Name: Ivernia
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachuset ts
Friend's Name: Walter McAdams
Last Residence: Ireland
Birthplace: Glasgow, Scotland
Microfilm Roll Number: 173
Note that the 1901 census has him born 1892, but this has him 1888.
He was single. He was a Laborer. He could read and write. His nationality was British, but his race was Irish. Last
permanent residence was Ramelton. Nearest relative was father: Wm Callan, Ramelton
Final destination was De Kalb (same as Samuel). This is Afton, Dekalb, Illinois. He did have a ticket to this final
destination, as Samuel did. But passage was paid for by his step-brother, not by himself. He had $25 in his
pocket.
Looks like he had not been in the US before. He was going to "Friend Walter McAdams, De Kalb, Ill". He was not in prison.
He was not a polygamist nor an anarchist. He was not coming to the US on any offer to labor, like Samuel. He was in good
health and not crippled. He was 5'9", fair complexion, fair hair and brown eyes. No marks of identification.

No. 59: Sam Callan
No. 63: Walter McAdams
This from Mary who is researching the McMenamin's:
James and Anne McMenamin. They lived in Castlederg, County Tyrone. Castlederg is about 4 or 5 miles from the Donegal-Tyrone
border.
9 children, 1 girl, 8 boys. Four sons emigrated over a period of 10 years, from 1870 to 1880. Michael, Owen, Patrick and
Hugh.
Patrick and Hugh.settled in DeKalb, IL. Each had a son they named John (their brother, John stayed in Ireland).
Looking at the 1920 census of Afton, Dekalb, Illinois is John McMenamin, son of Patrick. John's wife Martha, their 4
children and hired man Sam Callan, age 23 are living on the farm.
John was born in Greenbush, NY 1878. The family moved to DeKalb by 1881 so certainly this John never knew Ireland but there is a chance that his father Patrick might have know the McAdams family.

mary ann -- sarah put "mary ann" for her mother's name on her marriage
cert. b. 22 Oct 1915, 2 Chalmers St (Source: Angela)
