Crucifixion.
Psalms for the Easter Vigil J. Scavone WLP
• A collection of psalms and a Gospel Acclamation for the
Easter Vigil Mass.
Make Us Turn to You P. Inwood GIA
• This piece is intended for use during penitential services
as a gathering song, or a reflection after the Liturgy of the Word, or sung
during the reconciliation of individual penitents. Useful during Lent,
especially on Ash Wednesday.

• Based on the text by Brian Wren, Marty Haugen’s piece
reminds the listener that although life experiences can be painful, God is
always by our side.

• This setting of Psalm 146 is suitable for celebrations
focusing on ministry or service.

child's Baptism.
Behold a Savior D. Mengel GIA

TUNXIS ROAD, WEST HARTFORD, CT .
CONCERT -
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8TH, 2006 AT 7 P.M.
WORKSHOP - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH, 2006 FROM 9 A.M. TO 3 P.M.
Dan Schutte has been composing music for worship for more than 30 years. Many of
his most celebrated pieces, including “Here I Am, Lord,” “City of God” and “Sing
a New Song,” come from his years of collaboration with the St. Louis Jesuits.
His more recent pieces still exhibit that enduring ability to reach into
people’s hearts and draw them into prayer. His music continues to be part of the
standard repertoire for Christian worship worldwide.
Currently Dan is composer in residence at the University of San Francisco and
director of music for the Office of University Ministries. He has two master’s
degrees from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, as well as
an honorary doctorate.
He lectures extensively throughout the United States and abroad, offering
workshops and retreats for liturgists and musicians.

CHAPTER EVENTS AND PLANS: WINTER - SUMMER, '05
Our January workshop/choral review was on Jan 10: A triple workshop featured presentations on GIRM 2000, music reading for the non-musician, and choral review for Lent/Holy Week/Easter. Our thanks to the good people at St. Elizabeth Seton in Rocky Hill for hosting, especially Fr. Al LeBlanc and staff, and Elizabeth Husmer, music director.
Frs. Bob Burbank and Jim McKearney gave a wicked-good presentation on the GIRM 2000. Instead of 'lecturing' folks for the hour, they had a discussion between them - taking on pseudo-roles of the view-from-the-pew, parish priest, music director and folk group member... informative AND a lot of laughs as you can imagine. Questions from the audience, of course.
Fr. Jim McKearney is studying at the Gregorian University in Rome, completing his doctoral dissertation on The Theological and Catechetical Significance of Sacred Music: A Patristic Foundation for Contemporary Criticism. Fr. Bob Burbank was appointed the chair of the Commission for Sacred Liturgy and Sacred Music for the Archdiocese of Hartford under Archbishop Whealon. He represented the Archdiocese at numerous meetings of the FDLC (Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions), as well as at many national and regional meetings of NPM, and of Form/Reform, which dealt with the building and renovation of churches. He now has the title of "Pastor Emeritus", at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, East Haven.
Elizabeth Husmer and I presented Part II of Music Reading for Non-musicians, and received good feedback. We dug deeper and made people work harder, but all-in-all still feel like we're scratching the surface. Elizabeth has decided to do a day-long workshop on note-reading for her choir on a Saturday, and I plan to do the same. Maybe if we get enough interest some of us music readers can wrangle up a few days to do a workshop this summer.
A CHAPTER ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING is planned for Monday evening, February 28 at Mary Our Queen in Southington (directions below) from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Purpose is to solicit fresh ideas about events, planning, and working behind the scenes, and to get current on key organizational issues. A separate invitation will be sent to the membership.
Speaking of Summer: Here are three opportunities that we should seriously consider as growth opportunities for education and development of our choirs and parishes. As pastoral musicians we must continue to learn, evaluate, and grow - our parishes and liturgies are bound to stifle in mediocrity if we don't. We must continually ask ourselves: are we doing our best to grow and learn, or are we accepting that we don't want to bother?

I: NPM NATIONAL CONVENTION IN MILWAUKEE: JUNE 27 - JULY 1 If you haven't considered attending a national convention, you don't know what you're missing. Group discounts are available through the Hartford chapter - let me know. Check out the web: WWW.NPM.ORG Talk to your pastor NOW about planning ahead and getting some $$ assistance perhaps. You won't miss weekend masses. Summer '06 Eastern Regional Convention will be held in Stamford, CT! |
II. NPM CHOIR DIRECTOR INSTITUTE - HOLY FAMILY MONASTERY, WEST HARTFORD: JULY 11 - 15. The twentieth annual Choir Director Institute will include large and small-group instruction; conducting practice; musical score preparation; sessions on vocal skills, liturgy, and Scripture; choral reading sessions; and sung prayer. Begins Monday at 8:00 AM and ends Friday at noon. You'll come home with gobs of music, too. I've attended this before - one of the best for sure. Again, talk to your pastor NOW about it. Your choir and parish will gain - everybody wins. Faculty: Rob Glover, Paul French, Kathleen DeJardin, and David Philippart.
III. WEEKEND RETREAT FOR MUSIC MINISTERS - HOLY FAMILY MONASTERY
SEPTEMBER 16 - 18 (FRIDAY EVENING - SUNDAY NOON). If you don't make a retreat
like this once a year, this is the time. Talk to your pastor and plan on missing
weekend masses; it's not a retreat if you have to work.
