An Early Fall Trip To The Imp
This is another little hike that we decided to do while camping at Dolly Copp Campground. The weather had been fine for camping but we had not had many really clear days so we decided to do something short and sweet rather than see another viewless summit somewhere. Doing the Imp allowed us to not have to get up for a real early start, but, the forecast was for the weather to worsen as the day went on so we did get on the trail by 8:30ish. Imp trail is actually a loop trail that has two trail heads on Route 16. We chose to go up the Northern one and would decide once we got to the Imp whether or not we would continue or just return the same way. It's actually a very pleasant trail that follows along Imp Brook with some nice little cascades. Other than the cascades there were a few points of interest as we continued the steady but never steep climb. The trail crews had built a rather nice set of stairs that I had to get a shot of and not long after we came to a pretty nice view out through the trees. With the weather luck we'd been having lately it was a fantastic view! The only other picture I took on the way up was of some interesting mushrooms. Before long we were standing on the Imp Face and had a great tele shot down to the campground we had just left behind. That's Hayes Field in the picture. We hung out for a few minutes trying to decide if we wanted to have a snack or not but it didn't take long to realize that the weather was quickly deteriorating as seen in this view down Pinkham Notch. So I got a shot of Louise standing near the edge, and one shot of the less than fantastic view of Mount Madison, and then we turned and headed back down the way we had come up thinking maybe we could beat the rain. We were back to the car in no time and again enjoyed the fact that "home" was 5 minutes away. Once we got back to camp we took a walk so I could give you a look up at the Imp from the campground. It's taken from approximately the same spot in the campground that I had taken a picture of while up on the face.
