- The Guittar family story, out of necessity, begins with the most current and works backward in time, as no substantive oral, much less written heritage exists.
I am in the process of revising the list of individual family members, so check back in a few days and they will be "up" again. However, the family patriarch and matriarch known to date are Jean Guitard dit Lagrandeur and Marie Anne Meloche.
Jean Guitard dit Lagrandeur married Marie-Anne Meloche. Jean Guittar was the first to come to Canada. Jean Guitard was born around 1700 in Nachamp, Charente-Maritime, Poitou-Charente, France and died in Ste-Geneviève-de-Pierrefonds, Province of Québec, Canada in July 1752 (Burial at Ste-Geneviève July 24th 1752). His father was Jean Guitton and his mother Jeanne Guyonnet from Nachamps. He married Marie-Anne Meloche, born September 22th 1710 in Lachine, Québec and died November 8th 1773 in Ste-Geneviève-de-Pierrefonds. The marriage: May 26th 1732 in Lachine.
One of their children, Paul Vincent Guittard, would marry Angelique LaPointe. What follows is the marriage (in French with translation by a cousin in Montreal, Francois Richer):

Feb. 25, 1778, St. Louis, MO. d. 1831, who married Therese Poitvin dit Arpin, Born: Nov. 19, 1783 Died: unknown, begat Francois LaGrandeur dit Guitar b. Sept. 25, 1809 Florissant, MO m. July 21,1842 d. unknown. Francois would marry Eugenia aka Virginia Benoit Bonneau, and would be the parents of Edward Guittar. Francois would leave the family, and Virginia would then marry Antoine Geno, Edwards step-father. Edward Guittar b. Jan. 28, 1857 d. Mar. 11, 1922 would marry Elizabeth "Eliza/Lisa" Tebeau, who begat Zebedee Parnell - b. May 19, 1891 - Oct, 19, 1954: baptized St. Ferdinand Parish, 1891. Buried Oct. 21, 1954, St. Peters Cemetery, Normandy, MO.Guittar. He would marry Lillian May Marsh (Auf der Masch), who begat Forrest Guittar, Sr. - The name Guittar is found in various forms: Guittar, Guitar, Guittard, Guitard and LaGrandeur, including the use of "dit". or "A.K.A. names (ex. Guittar dit LaGrandeur). - Family lore purports that the Guittar family settled in the greater St. Louis area in the 1700's. But a few years before the American Revolution, the records of the Basilica St. Louis, King of France substantiate that the family was indeed in the area. This also includes Guittard's. - In the Spanish records for the area, which only go back to 1766, also show the presence of Guittars. According to Lucille DesNoyer Bordeau Tebeau, who was born in 1803, the Guittars came to St. Ferdinand (Florissant) directly from Canada. St. Louis & St. Louis County probate records show that Pierre Caillou died in 1768 and named his wife, Veronique Guitard, in his will. By about 1830 when Fred and Mary Guittar first went to St. Ferdinand cemetery there were at least six other Guittar families in the area. If you go to St. Ferdinand's cemetery you will find Fred's tombstone; the F is no longer readable so it looks like "Red Guittar". After 1850, the name is infrequently found. Of importance to the family were anchor points. These being family, but also the land and, significantly, faith, and namely the Old St. Louis Cathedral (Cathedral St. Louis, King of France) and the St. Ferdinand Parish (now St. Ferdinand Shrine), which sprang from the Cathedral. - The importance of these anchor points to the family Guittar is this - many, many of the Guittar's in the early years were baptized, married, and buried through the Old Cathedral, while the same occurred through the St. Ferdinand Parish. Many of our ancestors lay in the Old Cathedral cemeteries in the area of the Cathedral. As the city grew the land of these cemeteries were relinquished, and the "inhabitants" disinterred and relocated. Unfortunately, the Archdiocese no longer has the specific information, and has expressed that most were re-interred at Calvary Cemetery. Where and when is unknown. interestingly, LaGrandeur's are not found in the St. Ferdinand Parish records, but are in the Old St. Louis Cathedral records, and the 1821 Paxton's St. Louis City Directory. - My great grandfather Edward Guittar's father was Francois Guitar dit LaGrandeur. His step-father was Antoine Geno- who married Edward's mother Virginia (Euginia) Bonneau after Francois's departure. Edward would marry Liza (Elizabeth)Tebeau and have six children. Edward was an oiler for the railroad and lived in Ferguson on Adams and St.Louis Avenue close to the railroad Wabash track. Two of his sons, Avery and Zebby (my grandfather), were train engineers. Two other sons included Harvey, a tinner, and Lawrence, a the road boss for Burnham Foods. Two daughters are known, whose names were Lavina (who died as a result of her muslin dress catching fire from the home pot-bellied stove) and Cora. None of the family was over five feet four inches tall. -
Edward Guittar Liza Tebeau Guittar Edward & Liza's gravestone - Edward and Liza's children include:
Avery Zebedee Cora Lavina Harvey - No Picture Is Available for Lawrence. The picture above for Lavina is a "stand-in", as no picture exists of her.
Zeb and Lil Guittar, 1912 In later years - - Zeb and Lil would have four children. Forrest would be the eldest, followed by Walter "Buddy". Next would come a child stillborn, and lastly Betty Jean.
Forrest, Betty Jean and and Walter "Buddy" Guittar - Zeb and Lil's son, Forrest Edward, would marry twice. His second marriage would be to Evelyn Petran in September, 1948.
