BIOGRAPHY: Minnie L. Mitchell 7 DEC 1867-1 OCT 1935
Minnie L. (Johnson) Mitchell was born in Edgar County, Illinois on 7 Dec 1867. Minnie’s brothers John N. and Leonard H. and her sister Phoebe A. were also born in Illinois. Her sister Emma A. was born in Nebraska.
Minnie's family moved to York County, Nebraska in 1873. Minnie's father Leonard Homesteaded a quarter section of land in Arborville Township where the family lived for 12 years in a sod house (called a "soddy").
Minnie's Mother was the former Angie Fightmaster of Illinois.
At age 17 years Minnie married George William Mitchell, of a neighboring family on 6 De c 1885. The marriage license indicates that the ceremony was witnessed by M. Mitchell, A. Huffman and J.W. Johnson. Minnie and George remained in Nebraska until 1893 when they moved t o Iowa. Minnie gave birth to two sons in Boone County, Iowa. Roy Milton was born 13 Aug 1893 and Elmer Gale was born 12 April 1900.
In 1901 the family returned to Nebraska and farming. On 16 March 1905 George and Minnie purchased an eighty acre farm from Minnie's parents. The legal description of the farm is E2 NE4 32 T12 R4 Arborville Township York County. The farm was sold on 17 Sept 1918 and Minnie and George moved to Polk, Nebraska. The sons were serving in the U.S. Army at that time, i.e. Roy from 17 May 1917 to 27 Sept 1919 and Elmer from 14 Aug 1918 to 27 Jun 1919.
In Polk, Minnie and George engaged in a cafe business, it was located where the America n Legion is now located. One of the employees at the cafe was Myrtle Gilmore. Minnie's son Roy proposed marriage to Myrtle and they were subsequently married.
Minnie passed away on 1 Oct 1935 after suffering ill health for two years.
This writer vividly recalls the intense pain of his Grandmother. She was survived in death by her sisters Phoebe and Emma, her brother John, her husband, two sons and two grandsons. Her death certificate lists her death as a result of vascular heart disease and cerebral hemorrhage. Written by Dean Mitchell.
Minnie is buried in Lincoln Creek Cemetery in York County beside her husband George.4,5 Roy Milton Mitchell died on 29 February 1968 at Benedict, York, Nebraska, U.S.A., 410021N0973622W, at age 74. North Blue Precinct is situated in the northwest corner of the county. The north fork of the Blue courses through the precinct, and other minor streams furnish abundant facilities for obtaining pure water. J. W. Kingston is honored as the first settler in the precinct. He arrived in the spring of 1870 and took up a homestead claim on Section 8, Town 12, Range 4. Along the banks of the Blue, a few weeks later, he was joined by Samuel Cline and Philanda [Philander] Church, who located on the same section. During the summer of 1871, Jordan Denny and V. Dich settled on Section 4, and A. C. Eberhart on Section 8. In the spring of 1871 the south part of the precinct was settled. R. M. Lytle, John Lett, A. M. Daucker and William Cross arrived at the same time, and each took up a claim on Section 32. About the same time George Myers and Thomas Mitchell took up their claims on Section 2. G. W. Bowers and A. J. Bowers on Section 8, Albert and Edward Eastman on Section 6, Riley Myers and James Eads on Section 2. In 1872 a large immigration of settlers came into the precinct and took up all the Government land. The first school district was organized in the south part of the precinct during the summer of 1872. Robert Lytle was elected Director, A. M. Daucker, Moderator, and William Cross, Treasurer. During the summer of 1873, the first school was taught, a three months' term, by Miss Carrie Lorence, at the house of William Cross. Arborville was laid out as a town in 1874, by C. S. Harrison. It contains one general merchandise store, a blacksmith shop and post-office. The Methodist Episcopal Society organized in 1872. The Congregational Church, at Arborville, was organized in 1873, at the residence of W. S. Hill, by the Rev. Mr. Harmon, who became the first pastor. Services were held in the schoolhouse up to the year 1879, at which time the church building was completed. The society of the Presbyterian Church was organized April 23, 1874, by the Rev. Mr. Robison, Synodical Missionary, assisted by the Rev. T. K. Hedges. William Greer and John Lett, were elected elders, and Mr. Hedges was called as pastor. His labors cover a period of one year, and were continued by Rev. Mr. Powell for two years. From 1877 until 1880 the church was without a pastor. Rev. B. F. Sharpe, the present incumbent, was called in 1880. The United Brethren organized their society in 1875, and erected a church building in 1877. At the age of thirty-one he experienced religion and united with the Baptist church in Indiana, and shortly after was elected deacon of the church to which he belonged. By his consistent christian life, he won the esteem of his fellows in the church in Indiana, and shortly after was elected deacon of the church to which he belonged. He was an old fashioned christian, who pointed definitely, with greatful praise, to the very day on which he was converted and received pardon for his sins. He passed away firmly believing in the mercy and goodness of that gracious Father who had been his hope and trust through life. He left an aged wife, eight children, and a number of grandchildren, to mourn their loss. The funeral services was conducted on the 30th, by Elder A.Z. T. Heath, assisted by Rev. Mr. Lloyd.
