How Hampshire and Hardy County Evolved

Present day Hardy County, WVA is bounded on the north by Hampshire County, on the east by Shenandoah and Frederick Counties in Virginia, on the south by Rockingham County, VA and Pendleton County, WVA and on the west by Grant County, WVA. Hardy County was formed in 1786 from the southern part of Hampshire County, which in turn was formed in 1754 from Frederick and Augusta Counties, VA. Both Frederick and Augusta Counties were formed in 1738 from Orange County. Hardy County was named after Samuel Hardy, president of the Continental Congress.
