The Log Cabin's Souvenir Supplement of 1905

with a New Every-Name Index

On November 11, 1905 the Log Cabin Printery of Cynthiana, Kentucky published a "Souvenir Supplement" of The Log Cabin, a 32-page edition chock-full of photographs of Cynthiana and its business establishments, as well as biographical sketches of its businessmen, government, and church leaders and descriptions of its government, school, and church facilities.  A page was also given over to Harrison County's second largest community, the "city" of Berry.  It is a "must-see" for anyone interested in life in Cynthiana and the county as it appeared almost exactly a century ago.

Reprints of both The Cynthiana Democrat's "Special Edition" and The Log Cabin's "Souvenir Supplement" are available for purchase through the mails from the Harrison County Historical Society or onsite at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Museum.

Notes on the Online Index

The index featured at this subsite of HarrisonCountyKy.US is  an every-individual index of the approximately 450 persons whose names appear in the issue, whether they have been profiled in full with a photograph, just pictured, or profiled or just briefly mentioned within the text of any article (* ~ Photograph only; ** ~ Text & photograph).

None of the pages of this edition, at least of the copy of this edition which was used in creating this index, were numbered, and so the numbers below refer to the number of pages from the beginning.

If, within the context of a profile, a spouse's maiden name is mentioned, both of that spouse's names, maiden and married, have been entered in table below.

Some names of business establishments are listed in this index, but only those which include the given name or initials of the apparent proprietor of the business.

Any name may appear more than once on any given page, so be sure to check for other occurrences after the first one you find.

What is not included in this index?:

  • Fictional names (such as used in quotes from literature or jokes)

  • Brand names

  • Business names (unless it includes the full name of the proprietor)

  • Names of horses, even though they may have "human" names.  However, the occurrences of all these instances are rare, and will not make this index any the less useful.

To begin your research , just click on the letter which begins the surname of any family in which you are interested at the top of this page.

An Excerpt from the Souvenir Supplement

THE LOG CABIN

A Complete Newspaper and Job Printing Establishment

ALTHOUGH established only ten years ago and in a newspaper field already crowded, "The Log Cabin" has enjoyed a steady grown and increase in patronage.  Perhaps it is not improper to state the fact that "The Log Cabin" today has without question the largest circulation and the best equipped newspaper plant in the county, every issue containing eight pages all printed at home.

POLICY.

J.M. Wilson, Jr.

Editor of The Log Cabin

(The Cynthiana Democrat's "Special Edition" of 1896)

It has been the chief aim of this paper to give fully and accurately all the city and county news which is in the special province of the county weekly, but the state and national fields are also covered as thoroughly as seems desirable in a paper of this class.  It has been the constant endeavor to promote the best interests of the people of our community in every way possible.  It is always distasteful to us to find fault and criticise where it can properly be avoided, but nevertheless we deem it always desirable to express our opinions in a respectful manner concerning any matter of public interest or conducive to the public good.

"The Log Cabin" is a Republican newspaper, but nevertheless we endeavor to deal fairly and respectfully with "our friends, the enemy," whose opinions do not agree with our own.

EQUIPMENT.

About two years ago an improved tapeless-delivery Campbell cylinder Press was installed, it being suitable for newspaper and book printing as well large job printing.  At about the same time there was added an Eclipse Folding Machine which folds into eight pages, pastes and trims papers at the rate of 1,500 and hour.  The outfit also includes two Universal jobbers, two paper cutters, Eclipse and Paragon, the former running by power, a stapling machine, perforating machine and Watkins gasoline engine, while a mustang mailing machine prints the name and address of each patron of THE LOG CABIN on the margin of the paper.

JOB DEPARTMENT.

The office is supplied with probably 350 fonts of job type and all material for printing of every description.

The job printing department of THE LOG CABIN is equipped for doing all kinds of job and commercial printing, including catalogues, pamphlets, check and receipt books, fancy booklets, year books for clubs--in fact everything in the way of printing is done here at the closest prices.

Our job printing is done by Mr. James Ewalt, the efficient foreman of this plant.  He has had experience in several large offices, and his work is artistic and up-to-date in every respect.  Mr. Ewalt is a member of the International Typographical Union, No. 548.

THE SOUVENIR EDITION.

This souvenir edition of the Log Cabin is printed in our own office.  In addition to the Log Cabin's force which has worked faithfully to make this a creditable issue, we are also indebted to Mr. Hope Redman, the photographer, who made the most of the photographs from which our engravings were produced.  he has been fairly swamped with work for the past month but still has managed to furnish photographs promptly for this edition.  We take this opportunity also to express our gratitude to Mr. R.L. Hall, the accommodating Manager of the Cynthiana Telephone Co.  Being an amateur photographer of considerable ability he has certainly been a "very present help" in a time of need and has kindly made a number of photographs for this issue, including the three scenes used on the cover of this edition.
