Where on Earth . . . ?
We can't be quite sure if
Daniel Boone had statehood on his mind when he came
through the mountain passes and first glimpsed the
lands which would become Kentucky . . . but might he
have been in a "Harrison County state of mind"?
While it is rumored that "Ol' Dan" once visited the
county for a brief spell, many tens of thousands who
followed in his footsteps have come to call Harrison
County "home." A few got their
education and got out, others were just passing
through, but many more made the county's communities
their home for a lifetime, got schooled here,
attended church here, and in the end . . . took up
permanent residence in a local or church cemetery.

Finding Your Way In and Around the County Today
Once you get to
Kentucky, you will need to find your way to Harrison County. Of course
Kentucky maps are available for purchase individually or as part of road atlases
at bookstores and online throughout the country, but if you would like to see an
"official" map, just go to the online site of
Kentucky's Transportation Cabinet,
an agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and click on the "Maps" link to the
left and you will be taken to a
web page offering GIF, TIF, & PDF
formats of the "Official Highway Map" of Kentucky.
The
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of
Planning website has a nice selection of current maps, including some
of the most up-to-date roadmaps available for the 120 individual counties of
Kentucky.
Assuming you can find
your way to Harrison County the following online
resources should help you get around within its boundaries:
1999 County Road Maps of Harrison County, Kentucky
A University of Kentucky
website entitled
Kentucky Atlas & Gazeteer is
another very useful place on the web to visit, and from there one can download &
view Kentucky county roadmaps of 1950 and 1999 for all of the state's 120 counties, as well as
access pages for 7.5 minute
topographic quadrangles and black & white aerial photographs of the
whole state. But if
you just need a 1999 roadmap of Harrison County, Kentucky, I can
save you a click or two if you use the following link:

Online Maps of Harrison County, Kentucky
Maps.Yahoo.com,
Maps.Google.com, and

Aerial Views of Harrison County,
Kentucky
Black-and-white aerial
photographs of the whole of Kentucky have been posted online at the
Digital
Ortho Image Download Center, and while they are not intended to be used as maps,
they might be able to help you to better find your
way down unmapped dirt roads and through some farmer's fields (Ask permission
first!). One might say that even birds don't get better views than what these
photographs offer.
It is not possible to link you to the specific images
for Harrison County, but if you have a decent
map of Kentucky in front of you when you visit this site, you should be able to
sort through the linked map grids at the site to get you where you want to go. These
images can provide you with the detail that not even topographic maps show, such
as property boundary lines and structures too small to include on such maps.
Even monuments in cemeteries show up in these photographs!
PRINTING
TIP - I have always found that almost all the images available at the
Digital
Ortho Image Download Center print a little too dark on my own printer, at least a
good bit darker than they appear on my monitor, so you might want to use a
graphics program of your own to lighten them up a little before printing.
Satellite Views of Harrison County,
Kentucky
Google was one of the first widely used online
resources for free satellite imagery. Now there are many more. If
you don't like Google's offerings just use their search engine to look for
"satellite views" or "satellite views of Kentucky" to find other offerings. Be aware, however, that not all areas
have been photographed with the same detail, and so the area in which you are
interested in may not be viewable with the same closeness as provided by the
aerial views at the
Digital
Ortho Image Download Center.
If the
Google images are not good enough
for you, or if you just don't want to spend a lot of time downloading images,
good color satellite views of Harrison County are also available on CD.
The "Image
Trader" (P.O. Box 30637, Flagstaff, AZ 86003) is an example of one
resource that offers satellite imagery for nearly two thousand counties and
three hundred cities across the United States for about twenty dollars each.
I have an "Image
Trader" CD of satellite imagery for Harrison County that I have been
thoroughly pleased with. Their offerings can be viewed at
www.landsat.com through their
store at
Ebay.com
