Introduction
The Index
The tables on these pages
list all individuals, bride or groom, whose marriage records
were indexed in General Cross Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893) the
first of three indexes of marriage records now located and on file in
the Harrison County Court Clerk's Offices. Except for three marriage
records, General Cross Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893) does not
include any marriage records for African Americans (See
General Cross Index to Marriages - Colored (1866-1949)).
The tables which form
this online index have several headings. They are:

"Name" and "Spouse"

"Date of License"
and
"Date of Marriage"
The Numbers
General
Cross Index to Marriages No. 1 was compiled as an index of all the marriage
records which had been recorded up to the time of its creation in the early
1890s.
General
Index to Marriages No. 2 is the first of the three general indexes to be
used on a day-to-day basis.
General
Index to Marriages No. 2 continues from where the first index leaves off,
seamlessly maintaining the numbering sequence of the first index.
Each marriage record has
been given a document number (Doc. #) which will help to locate the marriage record in both
bound volumes and in the boxes of loose records boxes.
There are a few instances
among the marriage records where two marriage records, for two
different couples, share the same document number. These have been noted
below in the column headed "2x" by placing an '[a]' or a '[b]' after the document number, indicating that
there are two marriage records with this same document number, and this notation
is to warn you to be on the lookout for this occurrence, whether looking up the
record yourself or requesting a photocopy through the mails.
In a very few cases, the
marriage records of two couples will share the same document number, where
documentation for the one marriage exists only in the bound marriage record
volumes, but not in the loose document boxes, and visa versa.
Also a rare occurrence is
the appendage of a fraction to the end of a document number. There is no
stated reason for it, but it appears simply to be an attempt to give a marriage
record which may have been accidentally forgotten and/or filed late a number
which placed it in the proper chronological order amongst other previously filed
marriage records.
Some minor corrections
have been made to the document numbers on the original loose marriage records to
make this index more usable. However, if microfilm of these records does
exist and is used to locate a record, this index may appear to be incorrect. If you can't find the record
by the document number, use the date of the license to locate the record (Most
of Harrison County's marriage records have been microfilmed in chronological order).
What's the
Name?
This online index
is a transcription of
General
Index to Marriages No. 1, except for that this index is an every-name
alphabetical bride & groom index, which means that you only have to look once
and only on one page to find the name of the person whose records you are
looking for. The pages are arranged alphabetically by the entry of either
the bride or the groom as it appears in the "Name" column; the next column, with
"Spouse" in the header, will give you the name of that bride or groom's spouse.
The names listed below
and on subsequent pages of this index were initially transcribed for this website as
they appeared in the
General
Index to Marriages No. 1, then each entry which appeared to be in error with
regards to spelling or form was proofed against the bound documents on file with the county clerk
(Loose records were consulted when bound records could not be located).
In some cases it was
difficult to determine the accuracy of the name as it was recorded in the index
or in the records themselves, and so the entry as it is listed on these pages is the best
representative of the name as it was or probably should have been recorded.
However, you will likely find that the names as recorded on the actual marriage
records will differ to some extent from the names listed in these tables.
Part of the problem in
identifying the correct spelling of a name is that several people literally 'had a hand' in determining how the name might have
been recorded in the index itself: The clerk, who initially filled out the record, the groom,
himself, if he signed the record, the minister, who usually filled out the
certificate, as well as parents and guardians of either bride or groom, who gave
their consents.
If the entry in the index
included additional identifiers such as "Miss," "Mrs.," or some title or rank,
it will be reflected in this online index, however the absence of any either
"Miss" or "Mrs." before is name should not be taken as an
indication of any marital
status.
The entries for grooms'
names in
General
Index to Marriages No. 1 also included a large number of initials in the
place of their given and/or middle names. The original bound documents
have been examined in order to fill out these names for this index, however, not
all of the original documents provide any more information about the grooms'
birth names, and other resources may need to be checked to determine the full
names of several hundred grooms listed in
General
Index to Marriages No. 1.
The When of
It
As with the names entered
into the index, the dates also were transcribed from
General
Index to Marriages No. 1, then proofed against the original documents.
Those dates are entered on these pages under the headings "Date of License"
and "Date of Marriage."
In a great majority of
the entries the document numbers follow the chronological order of the license
dates, however, this is not always the case. There is hardly any specific
reason for it, other than a minor error in record-keeping. One must
remember that General Index to Marriages No. 1 was only created many
decades after the marriage records were created. This fact is mentioned as a careful observer may note
this in comparing the document numbers and license dates of two different
marriage records and believe there to be an error in this transcription of the
index or records, when such is not the case. Every effort has been made to
made these tables as accurate and usable as possible.
Also, several marriage
records have a date of license, but no marriage date is recorded. The
absence of a marriage date does not indicate the couple never married after
obtaining a license. It simply could mean that the license was not
returned to the court clerk's office by the minister so that the marriage could
be recorded. Or it could mean that the certificate was lost in the clerk's
office before it could be indexed for some of the oldest records. As it
was stated earlier, one must remember that General Index to Marriages
No. 1 was only created many decades after the marriage records were created.
Records were lost, memories faded, and so many facts that were originally
recorded were lost.
In my opinion, it would
be a fairly safe bet to say that a marriage took place, despite the fact that no
marriage date is provided in the index, or perhaps, that no evidence
(certificate, minister's return, etc.) of the marriage took place. It is
interesting to compare the differences in the first two general indexes:
Of the nearly 8,900 marriages listed in General Index to Marriages No. 1
just over 1,500 have no marriage date attached, wheras of the nearly 7,300
marriages recorded in General Index to Marriages No. 2, less than 200
offer no date for the marriage. It would appear that time had taken its
toll on the first century of marriage records and that record keeping had much
improved with the creation of the general indexes in the 1890s.
Problems with the Indexes & Records
One
thing important note before going forward with your marriage research - The
oldest major index of marriage records, General Cross Index to
Marriages 1 (1794-1893), was compiled sometime in the 1890s, and it appears to
have been the first attempt to properly index the marriages records of the
county up to that time. It appears that it was then that all the loose
marriage documents were gathered and sorted and given document numbers.
Bound marriage records up to that time were also given numbers to correspond to
the loose marriage documents.
Be aware, however, that the loose document packet may only include one
or two types of marriage record, at best a bond, license, & return
or certificate (and a consent, when necessary), but in many cases only a
bond may be found, which itself is not proof that a marriage took place.
So if the loose documents you consult are lacking in some respect, be sure to
refer to the third section of records described below referring to
Consents 'How Given' & Ministers' Returns and the section devoted to
Marriages of Will Book A.
While
information as cited in any index should not be cited as a definitive source
that a marriage took place, there may be some circumstances, hopefully few,
where the names and dates provided by the index is the only documentation of a
marriage.
Other Notes
Also, while General
Cross Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893) includes three African American marriages
of free blacks, which I believe to have been a mistake on the part of the clerks
who compiled the index, there may be other marriages of free blacks listed in General
Cross Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893), and so one can't eliminate the
index from consideration when searching for marriages between free blacks in
Harrison County's population.

oldest marriage of African Americans recorded in the records of the Harrison
County Court Clerk's
Office were indexed in
General Cross
Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893), and so the document numbers,
when compared to the others of this list, would appear to be higher, and thus
recorded later than the rest. However, it would appear to me that the
marriages documents of free African Americans were originally on file with those
of the larger population. These first three were entered into General
Cross
Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893) before it was decided to index these marriages
in General
Cross Index to Marriages – Colored (1866-1949),
and so, rather than disturbing the numbering system of General Cross
Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893) the clerks of the 1890s left these two marriages in
the index.

would appear that the Van Hook-Lynam marriage was recorded
twice, once in General
Cross
Index to Marriages 1 (1794-1893)
and once in General
Cross Index to Marriages – Colored (1866-1949),
however the difference in the reported grooms' names cannot

Of course, there are
oodles . . . yes, oodles . . . more of information in the marriage records
themselves that the genealogist will need to fill in all those blanks in the
family history. Names of parents and their birthplaces, birthplaces and
ages of the bride and groom, occupations, number of prior marriages, and even
more, which is reason enough to send off for a copy of the actual records
themselves.
