                                                                  |John Hood  b. 1600 Halstead Eng  d. aft 1683 MA of Lynn MA. A weaver. He did return to England at one point; we know because from England he sent word about his apprentice to his wife Elizabeth. Settled at Cambridge MA as early as 20 Oct 1638. With his son Richard, he appeared in Lynn before 1650. John Hood was also in Kittery ME in 1652. The following year be visited England, as appears from a deposition in old Norfolk County records, under date of 5 Dec 1653, that John Hood, late of Lynn, sent a letter out of old England, to his wife Elizabeth, then living in Lynn. In February, 1683, John Hude with two others bought of an estate in Lynn, of house and two acres more or less, 3 acres lying near Sagamore hill, 4 acres salt marsh near Saugus river, 12 acres of planting ground on east side of town.

                                                         |Mary Newhall  b. 1632 Lynn MA  d. 14 Feb 1728 Lynn MA   Mary is mentioned in her father's will. "To his dafftter Mary he bequeaths the third part of the entrest of his orchard for seuen years. He also gives her "that pcell of ground that lys one the other syde the brook at the north end of my hows lott uppon condittyon that her hussband doe build a dwelling hows oppon it." Then follow certain legacies to dafter Mary and son John. The remainder of his estate he divides between his two children, two parts to John and one part to Mary ; son John to have "my hows and land that I now live in bounded from the brook att the north end upp to the land of Gorg ffrayll at the south end ;" Mary to have "that lott lying betwixt the land of John hawthorne and John Ramsdell." Of the land lying by Jonathan Hudson's John to have four acres and Mary two acres. John to have twenty acres and Mary ten acres of the "oupland lying oup in the Country." Sundry other parcells of meadow and marsh lands are divided in the same proportions. He appoints Nathaniel Kertland, Matthew Farrington and John Fuller overseers. The inventory, taken G-12mo-1656, shows that the homestead consisted of house and barn and five acres of land and an orchard ; it mentions "fowr akers of opland by John Hawthorn's house." Richard and Mary Hood conveyed 7 July, 1682, to Matthew Famngton, jr., a dwelling house and all that parcell of land sometime in the possession of Anthony Newhall deceased, viz., four acres more or less, or twothirds of a six acre lot where the house stood, bounded Westerly with land of John Gillow, Easterly with land of John Hawthorne, Northerly with land of Robert Potter, Senr, Southerly with the country highway that lyeth in the mill street. This was undoubtedly the four-acre lot next Hathorne's that Mr. Newhall bequeathed to his daughter, and here probably her husband built a house"

They lived in Lynn for a few years and then removed to Topsfield and lived in the northwest part of the town ad- joining Ipswich and Boxford on the farm owned in 1835 by Capt. Daniel Bixby. In 1746 Nathaniel Hood built a house by the pond which is now called " Hood's Pond." The house has always remained in the Hood family and in the Hood name and is now owned by Ralph D. Hood.

                                                |        |Michael Dunnell [Dwinell, Donnell]  b. 1640 France? Scotland?  d. 1717 Topsfield MA  Michael may have come from Scotland or Ireland, although family tradition says he came from France [a French Hugue- not who came to America after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685]. (Dow's History of Topsfield, p.419)  In his will of June 29, 1710/11, he gives to his son Dr. Michael "all yt parcell of Land abounding his house, as he hath improved for himself," and several pieces of meadow. This will was not probated at once as on March 3, 1717/18, his children, Mary, Michael, Thomas, John and Joseph, beneficiaries under the will, deposed regarrding their father's will that "as he did amoung some other things dubious of exact meaning, we have mutally agreed to divide the land between us in a different manner."  There is no proof that Michael was a Huguenot, like there is no proof that he came from Scotland. As Dr Henry Gale Dunnel says in his book, 'Family tradition always said France'. The truth of the matter is we do not know. The main consensus however, is that our origins were French Huguenot, but that Michael himself came here from either Scotland or Ireland.

The James anchored near the Isles of Shoals, and the Angel Gabriel off Pemaquid, on the coast of Maine. The diary of Rev. Richard Mather, published by Dr. Young, in 1846, and republished by the Dorchester Antiquarian and Historical Society, gives an account of that disastrous gale, as it imperilled the James, which finally arrived "rent in sunder and split in pieces" in the Boston harbor. Mr. Mather remarks that "The Angel Gabriel was the first vessel which miscarried with passengers from Old England to New." It was built for Sir Walter Raleigh, and sailed from Bristol, Eng- land, and was of 240 tons burden, carrying sixteen guns. For a full account of the wreck of this gallant ship, we refer the reader to Chapter XI of a book entitled "Ten Years at Pemaquid," and to Vol. XXX, and XXXIX of the Massachusetts Archives. Omitting details it interests us that among the rescued passengers, besides Captain Andrewes and his family, were his three nephews, John, Thomas and Robert Burnham, sons of his sister Mary, who had been put under the charge of their uncle. These all, with a London merchant, named John Coggswell, afterwards settled in the town of Ipswich. From the town records it appears that large land grants were made in 1635 to Mr. Coggswell, and con- siderable grants were made to Robert Andrewes. The latter was also licensed to "keep ordinary (an inn) in the plantation where he lives during the pleasure of the court." It was agreed that he might sell wine, "if he do not unwittingly sell to such as abuse it by drunkenness." This was probably the first case of the kind in this region. Under the circumstances it proved the confidence men had in Mr. Andrewes as a man of discretion and integrity. Consulting various histories and genealogies of the Andrews Family (e. g. the files of the Essex Antiquarian, the N. E. Hist. * See "The Great Storm of 1635." Essex Antiq. Vol. I, p. 63. Robert, senior, was the first Deputy of the twon to the General Court and until 1654; was associate Judge; County Commissioner; 'appointed and empowered by the Genearl Court to give oath of fidelity to the inhabitants of Haverhill;' appointed to set off the public lands, fix their limits &c. He was a man of rare integrity, and superior talent, as may readily be judged from the responsible stations he was repeatedly called to fill. He died on the spot where he first settled, in 1658 aged about 68. He owned, when he died, the first gristmill built in town." The History of Haverhill also lists the inventory of Robert Clements will on page 49.

In the funeral of Henry VII in 1509, he was a yeoman to the King's Grandame (that is, Henry VIII's grandmother, Lady Margaret Beaufort). In 1510, as yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, he had a grant to be feodary (i.e. one who holds land of an overlord on condition of homage) of the duchy of Excester within county Devonshire, during [the King's] pleasure. In 1513, as Robert Marbury Jr. he was a feofee, along with Robert Marbury Sr. (his uncle), John Lenton (father of his son's future wife), and John Marbury, clerk. In 1514, his cousin William Blount, Lord Mountjoy, was the Queen's Chamberlain. In the same year, Robert Marbury, yeoman usher of the Queen's Chamber, was feodary noted above, for life. In 1517, he was appointed to be sergeant at arms, with 12d. a day in consideration of his services to Queen Catherine. In 1526, his yearly wage as serjeant at arms in the Royal Household was £18 5s., i.e. still 12d. a day.  In the Lincolnshire Rebellion of October 1536, Robert Marbury appears as follows: In the examination of Sir Edward Madeson before the King's Council...Madeson, with his brother John Madeson and both his sons, then went up into Castrefeld to see the number of rebellious and there met Sir Wm. Askew and Marbery the serjeant and one Boneteene of the Exchequer. The rebels took them all except Boneteyne and Marbury... In a letter from Sir Robert Kyrkham to Richard Cromwell: ... "Yesterday night late" he was at Stanforde with Sir William Parre and others when Marbery and Madyson, the King's servants came in, having escaped from the rebels who they say are 20,000..."

Gilbert testified that he was not well, which he said was the reason for his erratic behavior. But the town knew he drank too much, and this was the cause of his erratic, loud, and abusive tongue. The court ruled in favor of Joanna and the other principal parishioners of Topsfield. She was once accused of witchcraft but was reprieved. Three of Joanna's daughters were accused and hanged as witches at Salem, although she was not alive to see it. Of Joanna's daughters Mary, Sarah and Rebecca, John Putnam accused Rebecca the revengeful death of his infant daughter's death for saying it was no wonder they were witches since their mother had been a witch herself.

A Forester!  A Forester!." Sir John, for his bravery and timely assistance, received from King Richard a grant to bear a Chevron Vert on his shield. He was knighted and made Governor of Bamborough Castle [see http://www.bamburghcastle.com/]. There is a monument to his memory in Bamborough Abbey bearing his effigy in full armor.

It was listed as built in 1640. The home was on Green Street, across the river from Turkey Shore Road and the Emerson-Howard House. The brochure stated that this ancient, red-painted home was held by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA), which has since sold the house. It is no longer open to the public.

In 1637 he was "called to Ipswich" .. (my interpretation - Ipswich needed a wheelwright and they offered him a better deal than Watertown ) and on 23 Feb 1637 he was granted a homelot adjoing Goodwin S.imons' land at the west end of town and 40 acres. He was granted incentives to stay including, in 1640, the right to pasture "two cows free" and, in Jan 1649 the right to "fell such white Oaks as he hath occasion to use about his trade for the town use.". Similar permission was noted in 1660 where he was allowed to "fell 20 white oak trees to make wheels for the townsmen their use." Such exception to the early environmental laws is another indication of how important his trade was to the town.

When sixteen years of age, John went to live with his step-grandfather, John Wyatt, of Ipswich, MA, where he remained until John Wyatt died in December 1665 and was heir to John Wyatt by will, upon fulfilling certain conditions, such as providing firewood for John Wyatt's widow, etc. John Kimball did not remain in Ipswich long, as he sold this property 25 March 1667 and moved to Newbury, MA, where he was living 17 June 1668. His residency in Newbury before 1700 qualifies him as an original settler of Newburyport, MA, even though he moved on to Amesbury about 1669 where he remained the rest of his life. It was in Amesbury, where he became involved in the Salem witch trials. On 16 May 1692, John made two deposition in the Susanna Martin trial. His statement begins:" That about 23 years ago, this depositioner, being about to remove from Newbury to Amesbury... They stayed in Newbury until moving to Salisbury in 1641. He was granted a “goodly” piece of land on the east side of the Powow River. The Town granted him this land on the proviso that he construct a saw mill within six months “that may be sufficient for the use of the Town”. He completed this mill which became only the second such mill in New England. He later constructed a grist mill along the Powow River. Around the year 1650, William constructed a home on what is now Congress Street in Salisbury. The home stands to this day and has been lived in by ten generations of his descendents.

Emigrated in 1933. He was the standard bearer and later gallant captain of the Warwich Yeoman Guards, and was founder or a prominent supporter of the Standish Hall branch of these guards. He was a strong Puritan and apparently hot-headed for he was cited in 1632 by a bench of Anglican Bishops to the hall of Lord de Birmingham to take oath to keep his Puritan teachings wihtin his own family and home. Unwilling to do this and heavily fined by the ecclesisstical court, he gave notice with his brother, Ezekiel, likwise cited, that he would leave England for good. Some time later, Lord de Bradford of Castle Bromwich near Birmingham, England, who was interested in Nathaniel because of his service in the Warwich Guards, ordered remittance of the fines levied against Nathaniel and Ezekiel and severely censured the Warwickshire Episcopal Court for its arbitrary procedure. A Grand Jury thereupon caused the British Government of Charles I to grant lands in New England to the brothers Nathaniel and Ezekiel, now freemen. It is said that their Royal Grants were made in 1642 in the township of Roxbury, Mass. Nathaniel is mentioned by John Winthorop, founder of the Mass Bay Colony in his diary.

Green. After 1681 removed to Groton where he had a "17-acre right" which entitled him to somewhat more than 900 acres of land, "upon division". It is of tradition also that he owned considerable tracts west of the River, in what soon became Pepperell. His home became one of the fortified "garrisons". Eevidence suggests he was killed 13 Mar 1676 during the burning of Groton MA during King Philip's War. "The Indians cut off the head of him who had been killed by their first fire, and "did set it vpon a pole, looking unto his own lande"... the unbroken and unvarying family tradition, in all branches, has been that our Founder "was killed by the Indians". In many cases the added phrase is "in King Philip's War", or "at the burning of Groton". [The indian chief who headed the ambush and related it to Capt Parker] Monojo was undoubtedly acquainted with John Nutting, and knew well where "his own lande lay" — namely, at his garrison, a few rods to the north of where he fell.] "  [Nutting Family Genealogy] See the Nutting Family of New England http://earlynewenglandfamilies.blogspot.com/2012/02/nutting-family-of-new-england.html  or http://earlynewenglandfamilies.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

            |          |        |                                 | Ebenezer Nutting M.D.  b. 23 Oct 1666 Groton MA d. probably before 1722/1723, Medford MA. The Munroe Tavern in Lexington MA was built by Ebenezer Nutting in 1695; in 1697 he sold it.  His Estate was settled 6 Jul 1733 in Cambridge.  Settled at Cambridge. Was a "learned blacksmith", but studied medicine and became "a skillful Physician and surgeon". settled first in part of Cambridge, now known as Lexington, then called Cambridge Farms.  He and his wife owned the covenant there in 1699 and had four children baptized before 1703.  On May 26, 1703, he exchanged land with George Blanchard, conveying to him forty-three acres of land in Cambridge and receiving a tract of land in Medford, approximately five acres with a dwellinghouse thereon and approximately twelve acres lying within the limits of Charlestown (Middlesex Deeds, Volume 15, Page 101).  In this Deed, Ebenezer Nutting is called a Blacksmith, as in several other deeds, but in the Deed of December 5, 1716, he is called a “practitioner of physic”.  He left no Will but there are Probate Records regarding its settlement in the record office at East Cambridge.  Deed of 1716 and 1718, call him a doctor, but previous and later Deeds indicated him as a Blacksmith by trade.Represented his town in General Court.  He was 10 years old at the time of the burning of Groton MA Mar. 13, 1676 in which his father was killed. Afterward "...there is some reason to think that ... he had lived with his widowed mother at Woburn. There is an entry there, showing that a bounty was paid to Widow Nutting for the scalp of a wolf. As the Widow Nutting can hardly be supposed to have killed the wolf herself, the supposition is that her boys, Ebenezer or Jonathan, or both... Ebenezer is mentioned as one of "Those that are already gone", from Groton, before 1707. " The History of Medford states: "The first physicians appear in Medford as early as 1720, Dr. Oliver Noyes and Dr. Ebenezer Nutting. Dr. Noyes died in 1721, and Dr. Nutting does not again appear in the records."

By the terms of his father's will he received his inheritance at the age of 23 when he gave a receipt for twenty pounds to his stepfather for the legacy. He accompanied the family from Reading to Groton before 1664, where he was a leading citizen, being lieutenant of the company in which J.ames P.arker was captain. His house, a "garrison", was attacked by the Indians in 1694. At a deposition in 1694 his age was given as age 70. In 1707 William Lakin and Jonathan Boyden were appointed administrators of his will. In 1718 the "children and heirs", namely William, Jonathan, Abraham, and Joseph Lakin, J.onathan B.oyden and John Nutting, entered into an agreement as to the division of the estate, but owing to delay and consequent complications it was not until 1743 that the agreement was accepted by the Probate Court, at which time, according to the said papers, William Lakin, Jonathan Lakin, and John Nutting were dead, and the others living.

The Browne brothers, John and William, help reconstruct the church building after the War of the Roses.  As was the custom of their times, for wealthy benefactors, burial was inside the church--in the floor, often. John's and Agnes' life-sized "memorial brasses" are affixed above their graves. You can see his at http://www.hullhome.com/Browne-Brown_files/brownejohne.jpg.

He supported Edward IV against Warwick, and in 1480 was granted arms by that monarch, and later assisted Henry VII, fighting with him at Bosworth Field in 1485, for which services Henry VIII issued a patent 6 July, 1527 to his eldest son Francis, authoring him to appear with his head covered in the presence of the King.'

            |          |        |       |                                 |                       | Agnes Bedingfield  b.  d.  While there is much speculation among genealogists as to Agnes Bedingfield's dates (born anywhere between 1450 and 1500), there does not seem to be any controversy about her marriage to Christopher Browne--according to Savage's "Genealogical Dictionary..." and others--and their children. Some genealogists have her father as Edmond Bedingfield, born about 1450, in Norfolk, England, and died October 15, 1496, Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk, England. Edmond married Margaret Scott about 1478. She was born about 1453, in Kent, England, and died January 29, 1514, Oxborough/Oxburgh, Norfolk, England.  Whatever Agnes's exact parentage was, at least she was a Bedingfield.
