He prob came to America with his parents about 1630, landing in Boston Harbor. Benjamin went to live with an uncle and became a refugee to R.I., and an adherent to the Baptist faith. He was a close friend of Roger Williams. On the night of Jan. 4, 1661, John Clawson (hired servant for Roger Williams) was attacked from behind a thicket of barberry bushes, near north burial ground by an Indian named Waumanio, whom Clawson supposed to be instigated there to by Herendeen. At first assault thereto, Clawsons chin was split open by a blow with the broad axe, from the effects of which he soon afterwards died, but not before he had pronounced the strange curse upon his murderer, which the legend records as having been so strangely fulfilled, "That he and his prosterity might be marked with split chins and be haunted with barberry bushes." More than a century later testimony was collected in proof of this dying malediction. By this it appeared that the descendants of the murderer were remarkable for the excavated or furrowed chin which caused the curse of Clawson to be kept in remembrance, and many a quarrel was excited at huskings and frolics by mention of the words "Barberry bushes." "The Curse of Clawson," with singular evidences of its fulfillment was collected from the most responsible sources by the Hon. Theodore Foster and also an account of the murder and trial, with a copy of a letter from Roger Williams, May 11, 1661, concerning the estate of the murdered man and preserved in the Foster manuscripts. Attached to the Williams letter is a memorandum which says: "This paper was taken to Newport by Theodore Foster and was read in Capt. Garner's packet on Sunday, June 27, 1814, the gentlemen then present returning from the General Assembly of Providence, among whom was present, Robert Harris, Esq., who informed them, etc., "of the attack on Clawson as set forth above, but he states that the Clawson "Indian was instigated thereto by John Benjamin Harrington. In Rhode Island Trials, Vol. 1, page 70, "The Indian confessed to the killing of Clawson and was sentenced to be executed. Harrington, charged as an accessory, was cleared by the jury and court.

                   |                             |         |         |   m. 7 May 1664 Andover MA  Their first child was born 2 months later. In their marriage record, Thomas is recorded as "Thomas Morgan alias Carrier". in Wales it was customary for sons to carry on the surnames of both parents, to wit: Morgan ap Carrier, ap being a prefix signifying "son of."  It is apparent that in America he followed the custom of this country and used one name only, presumably his father's. There is evidence that he used his father's name because he was known as Morgan in England and so used Carrier as an alias to escape. Estimates on his arrival in New England vary, but it was sometime near 1665. His first stop was Cambridge, MA, although he soon moved to Billerica. The History of Billerica says that Thomas was 'vulgarly called Morgan' and also says this: "'23, 4m, 1676. The Selectmen ordered the constable to give Notice to Thomas Carrier, alias Morgan, Welchman, that the town was not willing hee should abide here, as an inhabitant, and that he forthwith depart with his family, or give such security as shall be to the content of the Selectmen, on peril of 208, per week, while hee abide without leave, first had and obtained, wch is acording to an ancient towne order amongst us.' Very worthy men received such notice from some towns in later days. In 1677, November, he was assigned 'with his man, John Levistone,' to brush cutting in the south-east part of the town, and he took the 'oath of fidelity,' with twenty-four inhabitants, 1677-8, Feb. 4... Between 1684-90, he removed to Andover, and there his wife became fatally involved in the witchcraft tragedy... The welcome he met in Andover was not more cordial than he had found in Billerica. In 1690, his home was smitten with the small-pox and the Selectmen notified his friends that the town was not responsible for aid, 'for they took care, when first they came, to warn them out,' and a few months later, poor Martha Carrier had a more peremptory 'warning out' from the Magistrate of Massachusetts, at Salem... afterwards he removed to Connecticut [with his remaining children], and with his family was among the pioneers of Colchester. The following extract from the records of that town embodies interesting traditions of this remarkable man: 'Thomas Carrier had belonged to the body-guard of Charles 1st, of Great Britain, and was notorious for fleetness of foot, even after he was more than 100 years old. It is said that he killed the King of England. If so, he must have been the executioner of Charles 1st [who was beheaded in public on January 30, 1649. Thomas would have been one of the two executioner who, disguised in frock and visor, appeared on the scaffold before Whitehall and executed Charles I. There is speculation that his name is on the death warrant of Charles I, as there is a "Thomas Wogan/Worgan on the document, which given the way people wrote and spelled in those days, Morgan could be misread as Wogan. When Charles II came to the throne he ordered the deaths of Charles I's regicides, one of whom was a judge named Goffe, who escaped and lived in exile for the next 30 years (and was even hidden from capture by Gov. William Leete of Connecticut, also in the Stevens line, see below). Goffe's original diary was not disclosed until time had removed everyone in it from danger. In the diary were the names of 19 men 'condemned and in the Tower, but' said Goffe: 'Morgan was not in the Tower.'  It seems Thomas (Morgan) Carrier escaped before the order for arrest was issued and perhaps owed his freedom to an indistinct signature.]... It is said by his descendants that he was 113 years of age at the time of his death in 1735. He used to walk from Colchester to Glastonbury, carrying a sack of corn on his shoulders to be ground, walking very fast, and stopping but once, for the whole distance of 18 miles.' ...Traditions of his age differ. The N.E. Journal soon after his death says that he was 109 years old, and that he was not gray or bald, walked errect, and shortly before his death walked six miles." Tradition also states that Thomas stood 7 feet 4 inches in height, a perfect size for a king's guard, as they were chosen for their height and strength. Following Thomas' death, Poor Richard's Almanac reported that 2 coffins had to be spliced together in order to accommodate Thomas's height.

Although they debarked at Salem, the family moved to Saugus (now Lynn, Massachusetts) within a year or so. They settled Lynn, MA near Goldfish Pond in 1629. The site of the house was between Nos. 33 and 43 of Bloomfield St.  He we a man of good character and although he was fined on April 20/1646 "for bringing home sticks in both his arms on the Sabbath day from Mr. Holyokes rails", he was one of the prominent citizens and held many important offices in the town. In March 1648, while travelling to Boston on horseback, he was drowned in the Saugus River owing to a defective bridge: his heirs recovered £100 damages from the town.

         |                                                 |         |         |         |Stephen Bachiler (Sr., Rev.) b.@1561 Eng  d.1656 London Eng  Go here for more Here's More! He came to Boston  in the 'William and Francis' which left London on 9 Mar 1632 and arrived Boston on 5 Jun, 1632. In 1581, at twenty years of age,  he matriculated at St.John’s College at Oxford and received a BA in 1587. From Oxford, Stephen entered the church and was instituted as Vicar at Wherwell, Hants being presented by William, Lord de la Warr. In 1605, Rev Bachiler was “deprieved” of his living, i.e. disposed. But, given his future history as a reformer and one of the first to refuse to conform to the Church of England (and later to Puritan authorities), it seems likely that he was “deprieved” for his reformist teachings. He remained at Wherwell where Winthrop’s History states that he “suffered much at the hands of the Bishops” He was an ardent preacher of the Puritan doctrines.Rev. Stephen, with his family, removed to Holland 1614+, as disenters, and returned to England prior to 1622. He was then residing in Newton Tracy.Devonshire. In 1630 he helped organize the “Society of the Ploughmen”, a group of merchants with a plan for establishing a colony in New England. This endeavor was not a financial success though Rev Stephen was granted a Coat of Arms bearing the insignia of a “plow”. With sixty of his followers, he sailed from London on 9 Mar 1632 in the William and Francis, (“x”) Thomas-Master. After a voyage of 88 days, they arrived at Boston, Ma 5 June 1632. Soon after they settled in Lynn,Ma where Rev. Stephen, then 71, preached for six years. He was sworn a Freeman May 6 1635 Stephen had frequent conflicts with the Puritan authorities; he believed in the separation of the church and state which was contrary to the Puritan view. In Feb.1637 Stephen with his family moved to Ipswich, Ma.where he was granted fifty acres. Soon after, due to “continuing conflict” he moved on to Yarmouth,Ma. In the spring of 1638, he again moved to Newbury, Ma. where his son-in-law, Christopher Hussey, husband of his daughter Theodate, resided. In 1639 he led about sixty families to Winnicunnet,NH where the name, at his request, was changed to Hampton,NH. where he was granted three hundred acres of land. In 1640 he was excommunicated for alleged “irregularities” but was restored to communion in 1643. By April 1647, age 86, he was living at Strawberry Bank. Rev Stephen sold his Hampton Farm in 1654, resided in Portsmouth until he returned to England in 1655; he died in 1660 in Hackney near London when he was nearly 100 years of age.

         |                                                 |         |         |         |    burial place: 31 Oct 1656, Allhallows Staining Church Cemetery London  - Jim, Niall, and I visited this church @2002 but found only a tiny, locked chapel with a fingernail-sized graveyard in the financial district in the middle of a courtyard barely tolerated by the cement skyscrapers that overwhelm it. The real estate once occupied by the chapel and its graves has been consumed by the modern day, a move made possible by the great London fire and the bombings of WWII.

He seems to have settled near Mr. Clements, and tradition has it that he was the first person who plowed land in Haverhill... in the following year he removed to the Rockes, were in 1645 he was licensed to keep an 'ordinary' or tavern -- hence the name 'Coffin's Ordinary.'... Mr. Coffyn was licensed to keep an ordinary at "Newberry" and also to "keep a ferry on Newbry side over Merrimack, when the interst of George C.arr shall be determined, and that Geo. C.arr shall of have libery to keepe his boate going on Salisbery side."... Coffyn was fist license on the 26th of May 1647... and probably moved to Newbury at that time..." Mrs. Coffyn made it 'appear to the Court' that she put in six bushels into a hogshead, whereupon the Court acquitted her."

This deponent testifieth that about a letter that came from Piscataqua by Mr. T.homas W.iggins, we got Mr. W.iggins to read the letter and he went his way, and I promised to conceal the letter after it was read to my husband and myself and we both did conceal it, nevertheless in [a] few days after Goody Morse met me and clapped me on the back and said I commend you for sending such an answer to the letter: I presently asked her what letter why said she hadst not thee such a letter from such a man at such a time and sent such and such an answer at such a time and I came home presently and examed my husband about it. My husband said presently what is she a witch or a cunning woman; whereupon we examined our famly and they said they knew nother of the letter: afterwards I met with Goody Morse and asked her how she came to know it and desired her to tell me me any one person that told her and I should be satisfied she asked my why I was so inquisitive and told me she could not tell. My husband testifieth that I presently told him the same. Sworn to court May 21, 1680. "

(Roger Williams on the same ship along with 20 others.) A stormy passage of 67 days, they arrived at Nantasket on 5 Feb, 1631, and on Feb 6th anchored in Boston bringing much needed provisions to the people of Massachusetts Bay who were in danger or starvation. Their stormy crossing is described as such: "...all the people came safe except one of the sailors [the Captain's son, Way] who had not far from our shore, in a tempest having helped to take in the spirit sail, as he was coming down fell into the sea, where after long swimming, was drowned, to the great dolour of those in the ship, who beheld so lamentable a spectacle, without being able to help him; the sea was so high and the ship drove so fast before the wind, though her sails were taken down." John Perkins helped set down bounds between Roxbury and Dorchester. On April 3, 1632: "It was ordered that no person whatsoever shall shoot at fowl upon Pulling Point [Pullen Point] or Noddles Island, but that said places shall be reserved for John Perkins to take fowl in nets." In his will, he left his house, outbuildings and land to his son, Jacob Perkins, after the decease of his wife, Judith. Before coming to America he was the landlord of the Angel Inn in Axminster, Devon, England. Vincent Meigs moved to Hammonassett with son John Meigs in 1653/4.

To her daughter Emm wife of Vincent Magges a cupboard and the frame which hee standeth uppon.

         |         |                   |                                               |John Meigs b.1612 Chardstock Eng  d. 2 Jan 1671/72 Killingworth CT  arrived @1641 Weymouth MA with his father. To New Haven in 1853/4. John Meigs was a shoemaker, and during the time he was in New Haven, he became unpopular, apparently because he sold poor quality shoes. Nov 4, 1647, [S.amuel N.ettleton] appeared before the Governor and upon oath testified "that he had bought a pare of shooes of Goodman Megs of New Haven, russed, clossed in the inside at the side seams for his wife. She put them on on the Lord's day, and the next third day they were ripped, the soales being good, either shranke nor hornie, that I could perceive. And he also testifyed that for and in consideration of satisfaction from Goodman Megs he expecteth a new pare." In an apparently related case Meigs sued H.enry G.regory for poor workmanship on materials delivered to him by Meigs. Meigs had delivered the leather to him already cut out and paid him one shilling per pair for making them. Customers complained that the shoes came apart. The matter was referred to a committee of shoemakers and tanners who determined that neither the leather nor the workmanship was good. "Goodman Gregory, upon this testimony, seemed to be convinced that he had not done his part, but then laid the fault on Goodman Meigs, that he was the more slight in it through his encouragement, who said to him, 'Flap them up: they are to go far enough.' In this statement be was confirmed by two witnesses, who had heard Meigs say to him, "Flap them up together: they are to go far enough.'" Goodman Meigs being called to propound his damage, instanced five particulars: 1st damage to his name; 2d, damage to Mr. E.vance, to whom he had engaged himself to supply him with these goods for exportation to the value of thirty pounds sterling; 3d, damage in having his wares turned back upon his hands, Mr. Evance having refused to accept them; 4th, hinderance in his trade, people having on account of these shoes shunned to buy any wares of him; 5th money paid several men for satisfaction. The plaintiff and defendant professing, upon the Court's demand, that they had no more to say, and the court considering the case as it had been presented, debated, and proved, found them both faulty. Goodman Gregory had transgressed rules of righteousness, both in reference to the country and to Goodman Meigs, though his fault to Goodman Meigs is the more excusable because of that encouragement Goodman Meigs gave him to be slight in his workmanship; though he should not have taken any encouragement to do evil, and should have complained to some magistrate, and not have wrought such leather in such a manner into shoes, by which the country, or whomsoever wears them, must be deceived. But the greater fault and guilt lies upon John Meigs for putting such untanned, horny, unserviceable leather into shoes, and for encouraging Goodman Gregory to slight workmanship upon a motive that the shoes were to go far enough, as if rules of righteousness reached not other places and countries.." Meigs was determined to be most at fault and was fined £10. The shoes were ordered to be burnt. Gregory was fined £5 and had to pay the charges of the court. He was also forbidden to charge Meigs for the work done. On December 4, 1657 John Meigs was charges with having come "with his cart from Athomonossock, late in the night on the Lord's Day, making noise, as he came with his cart, to the offence of many yt. heard it." He pleaded that he mistook the time of day and that it was later than he thought. He said he was sorry for the mistake and promised to be more careful in the future. "The court "seeing the matter seemed to be done upon a surprisall," passed it over with a reproof and commanded him to make "a publique acknowledgement of his evill on the next lecture or fast day."

         |         |         |         |                                                 | William Ives  b.9 Sep 1621 or 1607 (speculative) Eng  d. 3 Apr 1648 New Haven CT   William Ives sailed from England in the ship "True Love" in 1635, landing at Boston. He is listed in the "Original Lists of Persons of Quality, 1600-1700," as "Wm. Joes," age 28, transported to New England on TrueLove, Sept. 1635. Genealogist Arthur Coon Ives has explained that early copyists frequently misspelled the name Ives, and that the letters "v" and "u" were used interchangeably. It is generally assumed that William came from the Norfolk, England Ives family. He lived for a time near Watertown, Massachusetts, and then joined the Davenport Company, a group of Puritans led by Rev. John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton. They left Boston Harbor on March 30, 1638 in search of a location for a new colony, finally landing at what is now New Haven, where the Quinnipiac River meets the Sound. They held their first Sabbath observance under an oak tree at the harbor on April 15, 1638. "Will Eues" was among 63 planters of the group. A 1641 map apparently shows the 18 ¾ acres assigned to William Ives in the new colony. The group purchased the land for the colony from the Indians, and supposedly lived in peace with the Indians for quite a while. The census of the colony in 1639 indicates that William had married "Hannah" by that time. In a church roll of 1641, William was listed as #69, and in 1646 Hannah was listed as #149. At a General Court held on March 10, 1646 to designate seats in the meetinghouse (men and women on separate sides), "Willm Ives" and "Sister Iues" were listed. William died at New Haven in 1648, leaving a widow and four children. His widow remarried to William Bassett on November 7, 1648. Source: I found some of this information on documents that mom was given at a Stevens family reunion. Other info comes from the internet, family histories, GenForum and the Mormon genealogy database.  I've entered jumps to family lines in the Mormon family database... just saves me from typing it out, and shows you the types of conflicting information that make tracing family lines so unrefined.
