PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT SCORES VICTORY IN ELECTIONS 2004 In races across the country and at diverse levels of government, voters once again demonstrated the strength of the pro-life movement in America on Election Day 2004. Despite being outspent (as usual) by powerful pro-abortion political groups, the pro-life movement once again demonstrated that it has something the pro-abortion movement has never had: the support of the people! Priests for Life wants to thank the many groups and individuals who gave so much time, effort, and sacrifice to elect pro-life candidates. Of particular note is the Catholic vote in the 2004 election: Catholics voted for President Bush over Senator Kerry by 52 to 47. Among regular Mass-attending Catholics, votes went to President Bush by a 56-43 percent margin! Now it becomes our task to work with these newly-elected leaders to bring about continued advances in the protection of the unborn. The legislative tasks ahead are painstaking and slow, and require immense patience. QUICK FACTS When does the unborn baby's heart begin to beat?: The heartbeat begins between the eighteenth and twenty-fifth day. When does the brain begin to function?: Electrical brain waves have been recorded as early as forty days. How early can a baby survive outside the mother's womb?: Currently, twenty weeks is considered the accepted minimum. However, this time will be reduced as medical technology continues to improve. What about cases of rape and incest?: Pregnancy from rape is extremely rare. A study of one thousand rape victims who were treated after the rape reported no pregnancies. She has been raped. That trauma will live with her all her life. Furthermore, this girl did not report for help, but kept this to herself. For several weeks or months, she has thought of little else. Some of these cases are tragic, some are also inspirational. We cannot assume the responsibility for killing an unborn child simply because the child has not yet been seen in public. We can hardly feed the people of the world now!: True, the population of the world is growing, but population is not much of a problem in the United States. With a birth every 8 seconds and a death every 11 seconds, the U.S. population is growing at less than one percent per year. THE TRUTH ABOUT CONTRACEPTION Contraception, the deliberate action of using a condom, taking "the pill", or other barrier devices and abortifacients to render the conception of a child impossible, is Gravely sinful. WHOA! Is that so?! YES! The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us so in paragraph 2370: "Every action…to render procreation impossible is intrinsically evil." Contraception is opposed to TRUE LOVE, because true love in a marriage gives TOTALLY of oneself, including fertility. True love created life and nurtures it. Ultimately, contraception is the selfish use of a marriage partners body for pleasure and the refusal to be open to God's creative will. This is an abuse of our sexuality which is designed to create children and to foster intimacy in the marriage. Check it out! This has been the constant Catholic Church teaching since the time of Christ. Yet, even well-known Protestant detested Contraception. Martin Luther called it "More atrocious than incest or adultery…a sodomitic sin," and Calvin regarded it as a form of homicide! Virtually all Christian religious believed contraception was immoral for 19 centuries until the Anglican Church allowed it in the 1930! Most other Christian religions soon followed. However, the Catholic Church reinforced the immorality of contraception three times this century through papal encyclicals in 1930, 1968, & 1981. Bible Geek's Answer: Before we mention exact verses, I want to say that life is not easy, especially for teenagers and young adults. Living a holy life, especially when it comes to sexuality, can be challenging and even seem impossible at times. Nothing is impossible with God however (Luke 1:37), and He promises us that if we have the courage to call on Him, that there’s no situation too tempting or too difficult (1 Corinthians 10:13). Scripture is clear about the role of morality, sexuality and the call to holiness in our lives. It’s never going to be easy (nothing worth having is), but answering the God’s call to holiness, and surrendering our sexuality to Him is the one and only way to true, uncompromising, unselfish love through sexual expression. You’re not alone in your struggles…be God’s child in all that you say and all that you do. The Bible reminds us that: Our bodies were created for a purpose… “The body, however, is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take Christ's members and make them the members of a prostitute? Of course not!” - 1 Corinthians 6:13-15 We should never make it more difficult on ourselves… “Immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is fitting among holy ones, no obscenity or silly or suggestive talk, which is out of place...” - Ephesians 5:3-4 God expects more out of us than we usually expect out of ourselves... “This is the will of God, your holiness: that you refrain from immorality, that each of you know how to acquire a wife for himself in holiness and honor, not in lustful passion as do those who do not know God. For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness. Therefore, whoever disregards this, disregards not a human being but God...” – 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 Your body is a gift, that doesn’t belong just to you… “But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” - 1 Corinthians 6:16-19 It’s not easy, especially when we’re young… “So turn from youthful desires and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord with purity of heart.” - 2 Timothy 2:22 Other people can drag us down, if we’re not careful… “Do not share in another's sins. Keep yourself pure.” - 1 Timothy 5:22 Temptations do NOT come from God… “No one experiencing temptation should say, "I am being tempted by God"; for God is not subject to temptation to evil, and he himself tempts no one. Rather, each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches maturity it gives birth to death.” - James 1:13-15 Living in Christ, means walking the straight path, regardless of the world… “Let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and licentiousness, not in rivalry and jealousy.
