7th child of Francis John Chapman and Mary Leigh

James Fleming Chapman born July 18, 1822 in Liberty County, Georgia, died August 16, 1890 in Wayne County, Georgia. Grave just across Wayne County line from Thalmann, Georgia.

James Fleming Chapman had five wives:
1) Mildred C. Harrington m. 29 Oct 1846 d. 13 Sep 1850 (She was 21 years old. Could she have died giving childbirth? And what happened to Mary?)
2) Eliza Ann Burney m. 22 Apr 1853 d. 25 Dec 1856 (during childbirth of George evidently.) Had three children: James Fleming Jr., Miles, and George.
3) Ester Ann STRICKLAND Pendarvas (brought 2 children to the marriage and was married to J.F. on Sep 12, 1857)
  aka Hester A
4) Charlott (shown as married to J.F. in 1880, probably married in 1876-1877).
There is real doubt that the wife of JFC was a Charlotte. Possibly a trascription error for Eller, his known last wife.  Her birth year is hard to read and subject to interpretation. Could possibly be the same as Ella's.
5) Ella Gertrude Burney, nickname Eller Chapman born 1862. Recognized mother of four children: Alonzo Lamar, Don Carlos, Mary Etta, and Joseph Fleming.

The following info provided by Glenn L. Little, husband to Maxine Chapman.
1) James Fleming Chapman was high sheriff of Glenn County.
2) He is buried with five others whose graves are now unmarked.
3) Records on James Fleming Chapman may be found in McIntosh County.

James Fleming Chapman was a private in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was a member of Rumph's Company, Georgia Cavalry
(Wayne Cavalry Guards)

Centinel - Anniversary Edition 1965 (Name of paper not given, probably Jesup paper)
At an earlier date, the court obtained the release of James F. Chapman after recieving an affidavit that he "was not subject to military service" and was being held "in the service against his will." A year later, Chapman became the sheriff of Wayne Co. Incidently, his service in the office is the first available record noting that the sheriff was elected. It was dated 1864.

From Lamar Chapman:

Letter from James Fleming Chapman Sr to his younger brother, Shelton Madison Chapman.

I received a copy of the letter from the late John Byrd Chapman mailed on 3 April, 1984. I don't know how the letter was in the possession of John since it was from his grandfather to his great uncle.

The envelope was addressed to:

Text of Letter

Waynes ville Febry 1862

Dear Brother

I seat myself at last to reply to yours you wrote when you was at home which I found enclosed with one from D.F.L. the cause for part of cause of my not writing sooner. I have had measles(.) as soon as I recovered a little of the rest of my family taken it. I had 12 cases in bed at one time all better. I have 2 more cases not out of bed yet. I have had 16 cases altogether. Myself & Elie. I have **** had it together then the 12 now 2 more yet to have it. Then all told unless it does us like it does in Hopkins Camp. goes around twice. Babe has it now and he had it 4 or 5 years ago.

I helped Poppele hunt 3 days for your cattle. we found 56 head 4 steers among them. 4 was all we could fine. there was one old cow among the gang. he said he would take but she was so heavy with calf I did not sell her. I thought I would not sell her if she was mine. he offered $12 for her. the steers he taken at 15 per head-he did not pay me the money-he said he could not until he drove. I have not seen him since. I suppose he will pay me when I see him. You wanted me to write you how stood in money matters-I find two $20 notes. one note for $157 and 50/100 with a credit of $130 leaves a balance of 27-50 of principle and hundred and 30) $130 you give for my cattle. $100 of that I considered paid upon Elic. the 2 notes each $20 make $40 27 50/100 balance on note $30 on cattle is all I recollect of now. ninty seven 50 is the principle

The cause of the 2 last letter that I wrote you being in a different hand write was be cause I had no envellops. I would go to the office get an envellop from P.M. he would back it for me.

I have new to write you. I have not done the first thing towards preparing for another crop. just as I got ready to begin to clean up my folks taken measles.

It will take me 3 or 4 weeks to clean up ready for listing. I should plant by the middle of March or first of April. you must write me whether you want me to have the money for what your cattle brought. if so I will credit your note with the balance after 30 dol is settled for the cattle. I want it if is possible. I owe some 150 dol of borred money and was to pay it when called on and since I sold your cattle I have been called on for 100. I cant raise it without that & hardly with it do say I can have it. do say I can have it-you have said as much as that-but I want you to say so possitively.

We are all well as measles will let us hope this may find you well do write soon for I want to hear from you very bad. I have been expected to Savannah being actact from all I can see it will be.

Your Brother J.F.C.

Recollection by Dorothy Johns Thomas on April 9, 2003:
Now I will tell you what I know and remember about the family. I am 76, born in 1927, but when I was a child, Bryant and Hattie used to visit my grandparents. The farms were about a mile and half apart.  They always came for meals and didn't use forks, but ate with table knives. They lived with their son Dillworth Lovejoy "Dillie" Johns and his wife, Minnie Hickox Johns.  Dillie and Minnie has a lot of children, don't remember how many, but times were hard and my father told me years later that the reason Bryant and Hattie came to eat so much was so the family at home would have more. They lived in a small farm.  My father also said that then they didn't have a stove, but cooked on the fireplace.  Their place was about a half mile from the cemetery.

I should also mention that back in the oldest part of this cemetery there were a lot of stake markers that have deteoriated and we have lost a lot of history and a lot of names.

I think it was sometime in the 1940s that Dillie's family moved to Florida and I think that they all turned out well and prospered. I believe that the sons have all died, but two daughters are still living,  Nora and Mary Jane, but don't know their married names nor exactly where they live.  I believe all the sons have been brought back to Bethlehem for burial. Dillie had brothers, Sam and James Flemon, and there may have been more. Sam never married and died in a mental institution and Flemon married Mary Thrift. I may be kin to this part of the Johns family some generations back, but don't know the connection.

They had the following children:

M i James Samuel HARRIS was born 3 Mar 1875 and died 25 Mar 1934.

King Henry VIII TUDOR [Parents] was born calculated 1491. He died calculated 1546. King married Agnes BLEWITT.

King Henry VIII Tudor

It is suggested in some documents including in the book 'Edward's Legacy' by David Dean Edwards (1992), that it was whispered among some Tudor researchers that Agnes was mistress to King Henry VIII of England and that the son RICHARD was fathered by King Henry and not by William. But no solid proof has yet to be found if it ever will be. Nor has solid proof been found that Richard was the son of William either. It will be up to the researcher as to which line to follow. I believe that the evidence leans more towards the fact that Richard was the "bastard" son of the King and Agnes and my documentation here will reveal that line. It is documented that Agnes did have a son named Richard, but only 2 sons, William and Henry are shown to be positively the sons of William. Richard is said to have kept his Edwards last name out of shame for the indescency that his month engaged in.
King Henry VIII Tudor was born ca. 1491 and died ca. 1546. He had a mistress named Agnes Blewitt who was born 1509 and she died ca.1575.

The 1 child of King Henry VIII Tudor and Agnes is as follows:

I. Richard Edwardes

** Note ** It has also been suggested that Agnes was the wife of William Edwardes, born ca. 1500 in England and died ca. 1547. The son Richard is the son that cannot be positively linked to William beucase records suggest that he was born from another man, King Henry VIII. He is known as the "bastard child" of Agnes.
The 2 known children of William Edwardes and Agnes are as follows:

 William Edwards

 Henry Edwards

Agnes BLEWITT was born 1509. She died calculated 1575. Agnes married King Henry VIII TUDOR.

They had the following children:

M i Richard EDWARDES was born 1523 and died 1566.

James B. JOHNS Jr. [Parents] was born 1 1851 in Camden Co., GA. He married Millicent Frances HARRIS.

There are a lot of Jenkins families in Burke, Screven, and Effingham counties prior to 1840. Some families to investigate for connections to William are: Stephen L. Jenkins b. 1784 and John Jenkins b. 1806 in Burke county. The Stephen Jennings family also lives near and has close association to a Brown family.

The 50th Infantry Regiment was organized at Savannah, Georgia, during the spring of 1862. Its members were recruited in the counties of Ware, Coffee, Lowndes, Thomas, De Kalk, Clinch, Colquitt, Berrien and Brooks. After serving in the District of Georgia, the 50th moved to Virginia and was assigned to General Drayton's, Semmes', Bryan's, and Simms' Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from SECOND MANASSAS to GETTYSBURG, then was ordered back to Georgia. However, the unit did not arrive in time to share in the Battle of Chicamauga. It was involved in the Knoxville operations and later the conflicts at THE WILDERNESS, SPOTSYLVANIA, and COLD HARBOR. The regiment fought with Early in the Shenadoah Valley and ended the war at APPOMATTOS. There were 29 killed and 97 wounded at SHARPSBURG and 17 killed and 153 wounded at CHANCELLORSVILLE. It lost thirty percent of the 302 engaged at Gettysburg, had many disabled at SAYLER'S CREEK, and surrendered with 1 captain, 2 lieutenants, 2 surgeons, and 25 men. The field officers were Colonels William R. Manning and Peter McGlashan; Lieutenant Colonels William O. Fleming, Francis Kearse, and Pliny Sheffield; and Majors Duncan Curry, P.C. Pendleton, and John M. Spence.

Brown, Mary Ann (widowed) m: 0102  f: 13001 <- 1 son 10-16 years old & 2 sons 16-26 years old. All sons could be the father of Indiana.
Mary Ann Brown is 26-45. Given 2 sons about 20+/- 5 years old, expect Mary Ann is 40+/-5 years old

Conclusion: Mary Brown in 1840 census could be mother (or guardian) of Indiana for data given. Also 3 sons of Mary Ann Brown could also be the father.
It appears that the Mary in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 census is the same person.
It also appears the John in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census is the same person.
This suggests that Mary Ann Brown could be either the mother or sister to John Brown.
