He grew up in Camden Co., GA, moving to Columbia County, FL in the early 1830s. He had nine children by three wives. He served several enlistments in the Indian War. He appears on the muster roll of May 27, 1836 at Black Creek, mustering out on 27 Sep 1836. He enrolled 4 Oct 1836 in Capt. J. G. Smith's Co., Florida Volunteers, at Gary's Ferry, and was discharged 4 Dec 1836. He served again from 2 May 1838 to 18 Oct 1838, and again from 22 Aug 1840 to 28 Feb 1841. His widow, Addie, received a pension for his Indian War service in 1892.

At his death he was a wealthy man, leaving an estate with $12,264 in gold currency, $12,000 in US 5% bonds, 6-800 head of cattle, 5 town lights in Starke, a farm in Putnam County of 160 acres, 180 acre homestead that had on it 2-300 orange trees. His son Ervin was executor of the estate. His
will was dated 2 Nov 1875.
