From 1613-1618, the young businessman took a extensive trip of the European continent. When Nicholas returned to England, he became a member of the English Parliament; he later joined the Virginia Company and became its Treasurer. Nicholas also became a prominent religious figure. He was ordained as a Deacon and about 1625/1626, he founded a religious community in Little Gidding, Huntingdonshire. It was first a run-down manor house, with a chapel that was being utilized as a hay barn. His brother, John; his sister, Susannah; their families; and his mother, Mary joined Nicholas in Little Gidding. Together, they restored the buildings and began regular church service at the chapel. Their communal life included prayers (often from the Book of Common Prayer), fasting, almsgiving, voluntary poverty and charitable works. The Little Gidding religious community lasted for approximately 20 years. In the meantime, Puritans had become suspicious of them. They called it an “Arminian Nunnery” and were concerned about their Rome-like [viewed as hedonistic?] practices. In 1646, the Puritans forced the community to disband and all of Deacon Nicholas’ writings were burned.
