Absolom AUTREY 1, 2 was born about 1740 in Edgecomb Co., N.C.. He died 1827 in St. Clair Co. Alabama.
[Wittels.FBK.GED]
Absolom was the first child of Cornelius Autrey. He was the only Autrey who is known to have been a Tory. He was listed as a Tory officer on page 196, Vol. 22 of "The Colonial Records of North Carolina". LDS records only show 8 children, but the Bundy/Brooks book shows three additional offspring, which are included herein. The whereabouts of Absolom and his family are difficult to trace, but it would appear that he lived in North Carolina until about 1770, then moved to Alabama by 1771, then to Green Co., Ga. by 1776, and then to St. Clair Co., Alabama, where he died in 1827, or 1806, depending upon which record is used. The Bundy/Brooks record shows that Absolom deeded 152 acres of land by the Coosa River at Greensport, Alabama to his sons, James, Enoch and George on 26 May 1824. Since there is no Greensport Alabama shown on current maps the exact location of this land is unknown, but it thought that it is somewhere in St. Clair County since the record shows that Absolom died in Greensport and we know that he died in St. Clair County. There is a family story, perhaps apocryphal, that Absolom died on "the night that stars fell on Alabama". If the story is true that would have been November 13, 1833 when a large meteor shower was seen all over the eastern states. |

Captain John Autrey (Autry) was born in Edgecombe Co., NC about 1741 and died in Wilkes Co., GA near Skull Sholes on 2-2-1788 at the hands of Creek indians. He married Elizabeth Ann ? in Edgecombe County about 1759 and they had 12 children, all born in North Carolina, except for the last three, which were born in Georgia. By October 15, 1773, John and family had moved to Wilkes County, Georgia where he bought 100 acres of land on North Reserve Fork of Beaverdam Creek on the north side of Little River. On the same date Alexander Autry, his brother, was given 300 acres on Fishing Creek. John and Alexander had moved to Wilkes County to be present when the new land sale went into effect in 1773. John is listed with 3 1/2 polls, 5 slaves, and 287 1/2 acres in Washington County, Georgia on 4-23-1787. In "Georgia's Roster of the Revolution", page 22, by Lucian Lamar Knight, the following citation is found, "John Autery (sic) Refugee--Captain- Certificate of Col. E. Clark, 25th February 1784 - entitled to 750 acres". John Autrey served under Elijah Clark during the American Revolution. A letter from Elijah Clark to Washington on February 8, 1788 advised, "Saturday last, Capt. John Autry was killed by the indians near Skull Sholes on the Oconee River-etc."
The four Autry brothers who served in the American Revolution were; Absalom, the Tory Officer, and Alexander, John and Jacob, who were Whigs, and served from Georgia. |

Alexander and his brothers Absalom, Jacob and John all moved to Wilkes County, Georgia sometime prior to 1773. The records indicate that Alexander was given 300 acres on Fishing Creek on October 15, 1773. The "Georgia Roster of the Revolution", edited by Lucion Lamar Knight of the Department of Archives and History states on page 22 that "Alexander Autrey served as Regugee Captain and on 3-25-1784 was entitled to 500 acres of land". The name is spelled Awtry, as it was for his brothers, John, Absalom, and Jacob. |

Cornelius Autrey, Jr. is not shown as a Jr. in LDS records, but the Jr. is used here for convenience and to avoid confusion later on. The name is also spelled "Autery" in the LDS records. It is very interesting that Cornelius apparently went back to Ireland to find a bride and married there before returning to North Carolina.
In the Bundy/Brooks book the name is spelled Autry, and according to that source Cornelius Jr. and his brothers, John, Drury, Isham and James left Edgecombe Country in the early 1770's and went to the Fayette District that included at that time Moore, Cumberland, and Sampson Countries. |
