James Robinson was Clerk of the Superior Court and Inferior Courts of Wayne County, 1820-1822, being commissioned as "James Robinson, Jr." He served as Justice of Peace, 334th district, Wayne County, 1825-28, and as Representative from Wayne County in the legislative sessions of 1827, 1828, and 1830.

Mr. Robinson's home was on Cow-house Creek in present Charlton County where he lived until his death about 1874. He and his wife were buried at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church in Charlton County, of which church they were members many years. The Robinson residence was in Wayne County until about 1830 when he appears to have either moved to Camden County or have been placed in it by change in county lines. He was cut out of Camden into Charlton in the latter's creation in 1854.

Civil War record of three sons lost in the war: Matthew enlisted Aug. 15, 1861, in Company "F", 26th Georgia Infantry Regiment and was killed at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Jesse enlisted in same company and at same time and was killed in the battle of Second Manasses in Virginia, August 28, 1862. Hansford enlisted in same company and at same time, and was wounded at Second Manasses, August 28, 1862 but recovered; however, he died next year, 1863, of disease.

The son John A., who survived the war, enlisted in the same company, same time, and was captured in the battle of Spottsylvania Court-house, Va., May 20, 1864. He took the oath of allegiance to the United States, and was released from Elmyra, N.Y., Prison, September 30, 1864. Cornelius AUTREY [Parents] 1, 2, 3, 4 was born about 1709 in Autrey, Haute Saone, France. He died before 1780 in Edgecomb Co. N.C.. Cornelius was married before 1740.

[Wittels.FBK.GED]

The date and place of Cornelius Autrey's arrival in the Colonies cannot be established at this time.  The name Autrey is derived from French and has been spelled many different ways, but the Autrey spelling is used throughout this record for convenience. His birthplace is not definitely known, but is believed to have been Autrey, Haute Saone, France. The year of his birth is also in question as various sources give 1709 to 1720. The place of his death is also subject to question, with some sources listing Pitt Co. NC instead of Edgecombe.
Some sources indicate that the Autreys were originially french and migrated following the Norman Conquest to what is now Great Britain and eventually moved on the Ireland prior to settling in what is now North Carolina.  There is a strong family tradition, which is supported by the 1790 census records,   that five Autrey brothers came to America in 1750 to settle in North Carolina.  The first reference to Cornelius Autrey, shown on page 3 of the Bundy/Brooks document, involved a survey of land on January 19, 1754 involving 376 acres of land bordering Autrey's Creek. The fact that the stream was named Autrey's Creek would imply that the Autreys had been there for some time prior to 1754. Over the course of the following 20 years Cornelius' name was associated with several thousand acres of land in Edgecombe County.  It is apparent from the records that Cornelius was a prosperous planter.  The records also show that Cornelius gave 340 acres to his son Isom (Isham), 260 acres to his daughter Sarah and her husband George Vickers, and an undisclosed amount of land to his son William Page Autrey.  Mayo Bundy thought that William's middle name might be an indication that Cornelius' wife's maiden name might have been Page.
The Bundy/Brooks book only lists eleven children for Cornelius.  It does not include Mary, Theopholus, Elizabeth, Elijah, or Rachel.  The LDS records include a second John Autrey which is considered a duplication and therefore not included herein.

He had the following children:

  M i
Absolom AUTREY 1, 2 was born about 1740 in Edgecomb Co., N.C.. He died 1827 in St. Clair Co. Alabama.

[Wittels.FBK.GED]

Absolom was the first child of Cornelius Autrey.  He was the only Autrey who is known to have been a Tory.  He was listed as a Tory officer on page 196, Vol. 22 of "The Colonial Records of North Carolina".  LDS records only show 8 children, but the Bundy/Brooks book shows three additional offspring, which are included herein.  The whereabouts of Absolom and his family are difficult to trace, but it would appear that he lived in North Carolina until about 1770, then moved to Alabama by 1771, then to Green Co., Ga. by 1776, and then to St. Clair Co., Alabama, where he died in 1827, or 1806, depending upon which record is used.  The Bundy/Brooks record shows that Absolom deeded 152 acres of land by the Coosa River at Greensport, Alabama to his sons, James, Enoch and George on 26 May 1824.  Since there is no Greensport Alabama shown on current maps the exact location of this land is unknown, but it thought that it is somewhere in St. Clair County since the record shows that Absolom died in Greensport and we know that he died in St. Clair County.  There is a family story, perhaps apocryphal, that Absolom died on "the night that stars fell on Alabama".  If the story is true that would have been November 13, 1833 when a large meteor shower was seen all over the eastern states.

John AUTREY 1 was born 1741 in Edgecomb Co., N.C.. He died 2 Feb 1788 in Skull Shoals, Greene Co. Ga..

Captain John Autrey (Autry) was born in Edgecombe Co., NC about 1741 and died in Wilkes Co., GA near Skull Sholes on 2-2-1788 at the hands of Creek indians.   He married Elizabeth Ann ? in Edgecombe County about 1759 and they had 12 children, all born in North Carolina, except for the last three, which were born in Georgia.  By October 15, 1773, John and family had moved to Wilkes County, Georgia where he bought 100 acres of land on North Reserve Fork of Beaverdam Creek on the north side of Little River.  On the same date Alexander Autry, his brother, was given 300 acres on Fishing Creek.  John and Alexander had moved to Wilkes County to be present when the new land sale went into effect in 1773.  John is listed with 3 1/2 polls, 5 slaves, and 287 1/2 acres in Washington County, Georgia on 4-23-1787.  In "Georgia's Roster of the Revolution", page 22, by Lucian Lamar Knight, the following citation is found, "John Autery (sic) Refugee--Captain- Certificate of Col. E. Clark, 25th February 1784 - entitled to 750 acres".  John Autrey served under Elijah Clark during the American Revolution.  A letter from Elijah Clark to Washington on February 8, 1788 advised, "Saturday last, Capt. John Autry was killed by the indians near Skull Sholes on the Oconee River-etc."
The four Autry brothers who served in the American Revolution were; Absalom, the Tory Officer, and  Alexander, John and Jacob, who were Whigs, and served from Georgia.
M iv James AUTREY was born 1742 and died about 1828.
  M v
Alexander AUTREY 1 was born 1743 in N.C.. He died after 1781.

[Wittels.FBK.GED]

Alexander and his brothers Absalom, Jacob and John  all moved to Wilkes County, Georgia sometime prior to 1773.  The records indicate that Alexander was given 300 acres on Fishing Creek on October 15, 1773.  The "Georgia Roster of the Revolution",  edited by Lucion Lamar Knight of the Department of Archives and History states on page 22 that "Alexander Autrey served as Regugee  Captain and on 3-25-1784 was entitled to 500 acres of land".  The name is spelled Awtry, as it was for his brothers, John, Absalom, and Jacob.
  M vi
William Page AUTREY 1, 2 was born 1745 in Edgecomb Co., N.C.. He died before 1790 in N.C..
  M vii

  M viii
Cornelius AUTREY Jr. 1, 2 was born 1747 in Pitt Co. N.C.. He died 1810 in Sampson Co., N.C. and was buried in Edegecombe Co. N.C..

[Wittels.FBK.GED]

Cornelius Autrey, Jr. is not shown as a Jr. in LDS records, but the Jr. is used here for convenience and to avoid confusion later on.  The name is also spelled "Autery" in the LDS records.  It is very interesting that Cornelius apparently went back to Ireland to find a bride and married there before returning to North Carolina.
In the Bundy/Brooks book the name is spelled Autry, and according to that source Cornelius Jr. and his brothers, John, Drury, Isham and James left Edgecombe Country in the early 1770's and went to the Fayette District that included at that time Moore, Cumberland, and Sampson Countries.

The LDS FamilySearch International Genealogical Index, film no. 1903648 gives Martha's name as Martha B Autry and indicates she married Neil about 1768 in Sampson Co., N.C.  The LDS Family Search International Genealogical Index, film no. 1760897 indicates she married Neil about 1765 in Edgecombe Co., N.C.   The LDS Family Search International Genealogical Index, film no. 2034656 indicates she married Neil About 1781 in Sampson Co., N.C.

Jacob AUTREY was born 1756 in Edgecombe Co., NC. He died about 1827 in Green Co., GA.

Jeopine AUTREY 1 was born about 1680 in France.

M i Cornelius AUTREY was born about 1709 and died before 1780.

James AUTREY [Parents] 1, 2 was born 1742 in Edgecombe Co., N.C.. He died about 1828 in Tennessee. James married (AUTREY) about 1765.

[Wittels.FBK.GED]

James Autrey was born in Edgecombe County, NC about 1742 and appears on the tax list in 1763 and in Deed Book D, page 388, Edgecombe Co., NC.  By 1800 he had moved to Moore Co., NC and was listed in the 1810 and 1820 NC census with three children.  By 1830 he had moved to Tennessee, but was not listed in the census records there.

(AUTREY) was born 1746 in N.C.. She married James AUTREY about 1765.

They had the following children:

  M i
Elijah AUTREY 1, 2 was born 1765 in N.C.. He died after 1830 in TN..

[Wittels.FBK.GED]

There is considerable confusion about the LDS ancestral file for Elijah. He is credited with several children which cannot possibly be his.  I believe, and have altered the record accordingly, that only William and Alexander can be his children and that the rest of them were actually the family of William.  The book by Mayo Bundy and Robert Autry Brooks shows only one child, William.
Elijah had a land grant in 1799 in Moore Co., NC, and in 1815 he had land cut off from Cumberland Co., NC.  In 1818 he had 100 acres in Moore Co., NC at Jackson's creek.
M ii Frederick AUTREY was born 14 Nov 1772 and died 2 Aug 1835.
