Anson County, NC - Quit Rent - 1750

File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by
Guy Potts

There is only one original page of the Quit Rent of Anson County surviving
and it is at the Archives in Raleigh, NC

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The term "Quit rent" is one that was used in Colonial America to refer to a
personal property tax, which was assessed by the Crown. The local Sheriff
collected it, and it was sent to the Governor for distribution and
administration. It was paid in cash or tobacco. It was one of the "Taxation
Without Representation" issues leading to the Revolution, after which it
was abolished.

Now about John Christopher Davis/who died in Anson co. NC, I too  believe that was his name
went by JOHN in Anson co until about 1769 went to Craven co S,C and because of a tax war changed
his name to Christopher. There was a Christopher listed on land deed 1771-74 in Craven co.S.C//
MOVED back to N.C after the rev. war as 1779 IS first time a Christoher Davis is listed
on a land buying deed in Anson co.  I have come up with the idea his wife name was  MARY LACY//a John
Davis marry a MARY HENDERSON in 1762

Here is what info I have,
Three brothers came from Milford south Wales, on the ship "James and Mary" In 1701. Evan Davis, son of John Davis, settled on the Pee Dee river in S.C. In 1733 he married a widow Williams. Evan Davis supposedly had sons--Henry and Samuel.
Henry Davis settled three miles south of Polkton NC and reared a large family. Henry was supposed to be the father of Christopher, will dated 1788; and John Davis who married 1)Miss Barber 2)Nancy Marchall Nance.

hope this helps.
