5/6/09: Hixson 0 East Ridge 2 Its harder to write about a loss. But it helps when the guys play as hard as they did last night. Tremendous back and forth contest between two well matched teams. I felt we had the run of the first half (outshot them 12 to 7), but could not find the net. Great defense and several really nice attacks. Second half was more of the same with ER starting to gain a little momentum (shot count and run of game was still in our favor 8-6). Regulation ended 0-0. The first 10 minute OT featured several good attacks by both squads. It also ended 0-0. We started looking a little tired/slower in the second OT. After holding off a couple of strong attacks, ER scored at the 5:56 mark. We tried to push for an equalizing goal, but the amount of effort we had expended and our emotions were too much to overcome. Its difficult to single out players in a match like this, where everyone played so hard; but... Thomas had a solid night in goal with 8 saves, the defense (Hector, Dennis, Justin and Justin) was outstanding against the very fast ER forwards. Nau had a good match in the midfield. Great year, great kids -- Best of luck to our Seniors (Justin B., Cesar, Garrett, Luis, Thomas and Galen), we will miss you. Can't wait till next year.................
5/2/09: Hixson 10 Signal Mt. 0 Great start for the district tournament against a young, physical team. Nau had a career day with 3 goals, 2 assists, and 8 superior defensive stops. Cesar and Mauricio each had 2 goals and an assist. Hector, Justin B. and Luis rounded out the scoring. The other assists were by Justin M. and Thomas. The defense was amazing - anchored by Dennis and Hector. Thomas and Garrett divided time in goal for the shutout. And finally, if you were not there, you missed an outstanding header by Luis off of an assist by Cesar. Semi-finals tonight at 5 at CCS against East Ridge - come out and support your Wildcats.
5/2/09: Hixson 2 Alumni 1 Great work against a talented alumni team in a match delayed by lightening and rain. All scoring took place in the second half. Nau unassisted with a hard shot the goalie could not stop. And Thomas (playing forward) off of a nice assist from Mauricio. Outstanding play from Dennis, Hector, Justin B. and special thanks to Hector for his save on the line. Garrett had 3 saves in goal during the second half.
4/29/09: Hixson 1 Ooltewah 1 Interesting match against a good AAA opponent. We controlled the first half (outshot them 10 to 1), had the majority of the run-of-the-play, and scored by Mauricio off of an assist by Sher with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Ooltewah came out with much more intensity/physical play in the second half. After it became apparent that the Head Ref was going to allow them to play in this manner, we stepped up our game and the second half saw several opportunities for both teams. Ooltewah finally scored with 5:08 minutes remaining in the match after the ref awarded them a free-kick in front of our goal. A hard fought match that we had several chances to win, but just missed the net. Good effort by everyone, with especially strong play from Hector, Dennis, Nau and Thomas.
4/24/09: Hixson 2 Notre Dame 0 Now that was more like it!! Great match by everyone - Thomas had 5 saves (at least two of those were REALLY big) - Dennis, Hector and Justin B had great nights on defense - Nau was strong in the middle (in addition to getting fouled hard) - Cesar and Sher both played injured (and Sher got the award for being fouled the hardest-without-a-card). On the scoring side, it was Freshman's Night as Mauricio got us started with a nice shot off of an assist by Kevin. Just six minutes later, Jacob finished a corner by Nau. Both goals came in the first half (that I had us controlling). The second half was more even as ND came out hard to try to catch up. Outstanding effort all around. And THANKS to our great fans for coming out in support. (Click here for nice write up in the Chattanoogan.)
4/22/09: Hixson 2 Walker Valley 0 Not our best performance. But, to be honest, Walker is a pretty good team. Nice passing skills, and stays spread; those things caused us to "chase" a little bit more than we should have. We know better, but two matches back-to-back had us a little out of sync. Coach's halftime talk seemed to help and we settled down in the second half and played closer to our ability. Mauricio scored in the first half by staying alert and being where he should be - a rebound off the goal during one of our attacks landed near him and he drilled it. Second half had Dennis scoring on a PK. Thomas made a beautiful one-on-one stop to preserve the shutout. Other teammates having outstanding performances were Hector, Justin B, Justin M and Nau. We out shot them 34-10.
4/20/09: Hixson 4 Signal Mt. 1 Solid first half against a young but talented team. We dominated play and out shot them 18 to 3. Jacob had two goals and Nau had one. Assists were by Cesar, Hector and Sher. The second half saw our players moved into some new positions, and some new players in the match. It was interesting to see how we responded to different assignments. Cesar scored off of an assist from Jacob and we continued to control the match and outshot them 13 to 2 . Also, outstanding play from Dennis, Hector, Justin B, Justin M and Nau. Great win, keep up the good work, we have a long week with three matches.
4/16/09: Hixson 3 McMinn Central 1 The first half saw us up 3 - 0 on 2 goals by Dennis and 1 by Jacob on an assist by Dennis. McMinn moved their stars back on defense in the second half and were able to survive several good attacks. All in all, a good effort against a physical team. We are showing more maturity during these confrontational-type matches. Lots of quality minutes with Nau, Justin M and Hector shining on defense. Garrett also had a good second half in goal. PS: if you ever get lost, you can ask Luis for directions.
4/14/09: Hixson 1 CCS 2 Tremendous match, great effort, really proud of the team and the way they played in a very physical match against # 3 ranked and undefeated CCS. The first half was a hard fought 0-0 tie with us out shooting them 8-3. The second half started badly with CCS scoring twice. We settled down and got back into the match with a goal by Jacob from an assist by Cesar. Several other chances were just wide. Great defensive work by Hector, Dennis, Justin and Justin. Just a great match, you gave them all they wanted! Keep giving that kind of heart and effort, and you will be successful in every thing you do.
4/9/09: Hixson 0 East Ridge 1 Not our best effort. Guess we were due an "off" night - but, you can't take anything away from ER - they hustled. I can't remember us getting beat to so many 50-50 balls. I had the shots even at 13 each. They just snuck in that early goal and made it hold up. Still, some bright spots on defense from Dennis, Hector, and Thomas recorded 6 saves. Learn from it, get over it, move on.
4/7/09: Hixson 2 Soddy Daisy 0 Great match against a quality AAA program. Tremendous crowd support tonight - thanks fans!!!! Thomas and the Defense (Dennis, Hector, Justin(s) and Galen) gave us another shutout - fourth of season. Nice effort by Nau and Sher in the middle. Great match by everyone!!! First goal was by Nau with an assist by Luis with 6:15 left in the first half. The second half provided several more good opportunities and finally resulted in our second goal from Sher off of an assist by Cesar. Thomas had 3 saves in goal and we out shot them 19 to 10. GO WILDCATS
3/31/09: Hixson 2 Red Bank 0 MUD BOWL II .... Victory !! If the weather ever dries up, maybe we should run the sprinklers before each home game - we seem to do good in the rain and the mud. Cesar got things started with a goal from an assist by Hector with 8:10 remaining in the first half. The second half saw both teams make numerous attacks, but only Jacob was successful. He scored with 13:30 remaining off of an assist from Nau. We out-shot them 17 to 15 and Thomas had 6 saves in goal. Everyone played great in terrible conditions. The defense was particularly strong with Dennis, Justin Barr, Galen and Hector helping Thomas gain a shutout.
3/31/09: Hixson 3 Sequatchie Co. 1 Good effort against an improving Sequatchie Co team. We took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to Cesar off of an assist by Luis. We gave up an own-goal about 5 minutes into the second half and had to hustle to find the back of the net. We got a lot of tries (out shot them 42-10) but could only push two more balls into the net. Sher scored unassisted and Luis scored off of an assist from Cesar. Good defensive effort with Dennis recording 13 stops and Thomas making 5 saves. Nice game by the entire team.
3/27/09: Hixson 2 Grace 1 MUD BOWL victory!!!! Some parts of the field had only 1 inch of standing water, but that was the exception. Most had 2, or 3. Unless the ball was lofted into the air, a really strong kick would go maybe 10 yards. But, it was just as bad for them as for us. The first half was interesting (but no scoring) as both teams tried to learn what the water was going to do to the ball. We had some chances, and outshot them 16 to 7, but no goals. The second half was more of the same, but everyone was much more tired from slopping through the muck. Grace scored first during a really crowded "scrum" in front of our goal. This apparently got us into the game, as we quickly scored two goals to take the lead. The first was by Mauricio from an assist by Kevin, and the second was by Cesar.
3/26/09: Hixson 4 Rhea Co. 1 Great effort, really nice recovery from Tuesday's match. Cesar got us started with the first goal off of an assist from Justin B. Next came Mauricio from an assist by Justin M. Rhea snuck one in and the half ended with us up 2-1. The second half featured some exciting attacks and two more scores for us: Luis with a beautiful header off of a really nice center from Mauricio, and Nau from Kevin. Dennis filled in for Hector (hurt ankle) at sweeper and performed admirably. Nau had a good night with 8 shots (4 on goal), a goal, and several good stops. Good game, solid effort from everyone, keep it up!!
3/24/09: Hixson 1 Sweetwater 2 Disappointing result from a match where we held a 17 to 6 shot advantage and scored first! But even though we lost, there were many bright moments of strong effort and hustle. The team never gave up and was attacking right up to the end. Dennis got us on the board early during a nice attack with numbers. They countered later in the first half with a long (almost midfield) high floater that caught us out of the box in an attacking mode. The half ended 2-1with us controlling the flow of play about 60-40. We came out strong in the second half and made numerous attacks. Unfortunately, we could not find the back of the net. Our domination of play was probably closer to 70-30 during the second half. A good effort by all with special mention for the work of Cesar, Hector, Justin B., Nau and Mauricio. PS: Watch those OFFSIDES!
3/12/09: Hixson 1 Central 0 Nice effort on a REALLY COLD night. We kept pressure on them most of the evening and enjoyed a 23 to 3 shot advantage. The defense was strong with Hector and Justin having their usual good games. Jacob got a quick early goal and we settled in to try and build on that. We had plenty of opportunities and controlled the run of the match with most of the action occurring in Central's half of the field. Enjoy your break and be ready to support your Wildcats as we return to play at Sweetwater on the 24th. Next home match is against Rhea Co on the 26th. GO WILDCATS !!
3/10/09: Hixson 9 Bledsoe Co. 0 Great start to the season. Nice effort all around and plenty of opportunity for playing time. Our goals were scored by Cesar Carrillo (1), Sikhou Sy (1), Dennis Miller (4), Luis Ortiz-Gutierrez (1), and Thomas Murphy (2) with our assist by Nau Alvares-Calderon. We outshot them 34 to 4, but Garrett did have to make a save. We play Central at home on Thursday at 7:00pm. Come out and support your Wildcats !!!
