The lure of the antique world was powerful in the 18th century. While the poetry, myths, and history of the ancient world had long been part of the curriculum for an educated citizen, the discovery of the buried Roman city of Pompei in 1748, along with other archeological and artistic discoveries, sparked a renewed fascination with antiquity. With music from France, Germany, England, and Italy on the program, all treating some aspect of the 18th century’s reaction to the ancient world, this will be a musical Grand Tour. PROGRAM: Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (1665-1746) Musical Parnassus, Suite No. 1 “Clio” for harpsichord solo
