Celebrating the 350th anniversary of the great English composer's birth, this concert features music enjoyed by London audiences in the 17th and 18th centuries.  While Purcell composed many types of sacred and secular music, this program features songs and instrumental music Purcell wrote for the London theater, including incidental music to plays by Dryden Shakespeare, and others.  Music by Purcell's teacher John Blow and by several of his contemporaries working in Lndon will also be heard.  A pre-concert talk by John Burkhalter will explore Purcell's impcat on music for the theater, with special focus on the words and career of the 18th century actress Mrs. Bracegirdle.

The program includes:

·  Selections from Purcell's incidental music for King Arthur, Dioclesian, The Indian Queen, Don Quixote and The Libertine

·  Songs by John Blow

·  Variations on Greensleeves, music for division viol, and Purcell's music for harpsichord

·  English Baroque Trio sonatas
