James Butler and Hilda Zeller

James Grant Butler, son of William, was born on July 25, 1895 at Ravenna, Nebraska. He died at the age of eighty-three years on August 4, 1978 at Kearney, Nebraska. He is buried in the Kearney City Cemetery at Kearney, Nebraska. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Rebakak Lodge. He was a member of the First Methodist Church. Grant, as he was known, worked for the Northwestern Public Service Company. He retired in 1960. At the time of his first marriage, Grant was a farmer and worked on his father's farm at Mason City, Nebraska.

Grant's World War I draft registration card, dated June 5, 1917, tells us that he was living in Mason City, Nebraska, that he was born on the date given above and that he was a self-employed farmer. He was described as being tall in height and of medium build. He had brown eyes and dark brown hair.

Grant first married at Grand Island, Nebraska on March 15, 1916 to Hilda Emily Zeller, daughter of John Gottlieb Zeller and Anna Bush. Witnesses to their marriage were Bertha Zeller and Rudolph Zeller. Hilda was born on June 24, 1892 at Boelus, Nebraska. She died at the age of fifty-five years on December 26, 1947 at Kearney, Nebraska. She is buried in the Kearney City Cemetery at Kearney, Nebraska.

Grant and Hilda had two children.

  1. James Rudolph Butler was born on October 20, 1917 at Mason City, Nebraska. He graduated from Ravenna High School. He died on October 19, 1992 at the Mount Carmel Home in Kearney, Nebraska. He is buried in the Kearney Cemetery. He was a plumber by profession.

    James was a sargeant in Battery B of 541st. Field Artillery Battalion. He enlisted on October 13, 1941 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was honorably discharged on October 18, 1948 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. In his separation report, James is described as being five feet ten inches in height, weighting one hundred seventy pounds, having brown hair and brown eyes. He earned: a Good Conduct Medal, two Bronze Battle Stars, American Theater Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, and European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon.

    James married on February 14, 1942 at Charleston, South Carolina to Mildred Leona Sorenson, daughter of Andrew Sorenson and Andrea Klohsonia Anderson. Mildred was born on August 29, 1913 at Minden, Nebraska. She died on September 21, 1974 at Kearney, Nebraska. She was the deputy county clerk and a member of the First Christian Church.

    James and Mildred had three children, all of whom were born at Kearney, Nebraska.

    1. Barbara Ann Butler. She first married Leslie Carrico, son of Howard Carrico and Lucille The date and place of their marriage are presently unknown. There is some indication that it took place about 1962 in South Dakota. They were divorced. Barbara and Leslie had three children, all of whom were born in Kearney, Nebraska.
      1. Jimmy Jacy Carrico was born on August 15, 1962. He died in a pickup accident on October 9, 1982 near Minden, Nebraska.
      2. Carol Annette Carrico. She married on November 20, 1992 in Alabama to Jack Jorgensen. Prior to her marriage, she had one child.

        Carol and Jack have two children.

        • Michael Jorgensen.
        • Andrea Marie Jorgenson.
      3. Cindy Sue Carrico. She has two children.
        • Shandra Lynn.
        • Daniel.

      Barbara married a second time to Mr. Bowman. There is no further information concerning this second marriage.


    2. Linda Sue Butler.

      She first married at Kearney, Nebraska on June 28, 1976 to Douglas Robert Johnson, son of Harry R. Johnson and Marian Grimes. They were divorced on April 21, 1981.

      Linda married a second time on July 1, 1989 at Franklin, Nebraska to Delbert Earl Gooder, son of Delbert Ray Gooder and Wilma Norton.


    3. Larry Eugene Butler. Larry, an alumnus of Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska and Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, is a partner in the law firm of Butler, Voigt and Brewster at Kearney.

      He married at Lake Tahoe, Nevada on June 7, 1982 to Barbara Falconer daughter of Ray Falconer and Sarah [family name unknown].

      Larry and Barbara have two children.

      1. Andrew Butler.
      2. Robert Alan Butler.

  2. Loine Yvonne Butler was born on January 17, 1928 at Boelus, Nebraska. She died on September 20, 1960 in North Carolina. She is buried in Alton, Illinois. She was a dental technician.

    Loine married on May 6, 1950 in the First Methodist Church at Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska to Emmett E. Laun, son of Harry Laun and Minna Elizabeth Bilderbeck. Emmett was born on October 16, 1924 at Alton, Illinois. He died on December 3, 1997 at Green Valley, Arizona. He served in the United States Marine Corps.

    Loine and Emmett had one child.

    1. Pamela Sue Laun.

Grant married for a second time at North Platte, Nebraska on February 20, 1951 to Louise Triplett Saner, daughter of Richard Shelby Triplett and Mary Jane Fowler. Louise was born on February 19, 1907 at Kearney, Nebraska. She died on January 26, 2000 at Kearney, Nebraska. She worked at the State Teachers College for fifteen years, retiring in September of 1972. Prior to her marriage to James Grant, Louise was married to John Saner.

Grant had a stepson.

  1. Robert Gene Saner was born on May 19, 1938 at Kearney, Nebraska. He is the son of John Saner and Louise Triplett. He died on April 20, 2004 at Austin, Texas. He was buried, with military honors, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, Nebraska. Robert served eleven years in the United States Navy 11 years; and fourteen years in the United States Air Force. He was in Operation Deep-Freeze going to Antarctica and New Zealand. Robert was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Upon is retirement from the Air Force in 1980.

    Robert married on July 2, 1960 at Evansville, Indiana to Beverly Wilkinson. Robert served eleven years in the U.S. Navy and then served thirteen years in the U.S. Air Force. He was an air traffic controller at the Tri-City Airport at Saganaw, Michigan.

    Robert and Beverly have three children.

    1. Michelle Saner. She married in 1980 to Robert Cantwell.

      Michelle and Robert have at least one child.

      • Chad Cantwell.
    2. Tamora Saner. She married in 1985 to Brook Morris.

      Tamora and Brook have at least one child.

      • Christopher Morris.
    3. Tonya Saner.
