The Family of Joseph Samuel Butler and Viva Waite

Joseph Samuel Butler, son of William, was born on August 4, 1897 at Ravenna, Nebraska. He died on May 16, 1984 at Lincoln, Nebraska. He was buried on May 19, 1984 in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo, Nebraska. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Cairo and the Tehoma Temple of Shrine, Scottish Rite. He was a mechanic by profession, having worked for the railroad. During the depression he turned to farming. He was best known by everyone as Sam.

Samuel’s World War I draft registration card, which was dated August 27, 1918, does not give much information concerning Samuel. It does confirm his date and place of birth as indicated above. He was twenty-one at the time of his registration. He is described as being tall and slender of build and as having blue eyes and light brown hair.

Samuel married on December 28, 1927 to Viva Burnes Waite, daughter of William Burdett Waite and Cara Alta McInnich. The city of their marriage is presently unknown, although it is known to have taken place in Hall County, Nebraska. Viva was born on October 30, 1898 at Auburn, Nebraska. She died on December 5, 1984 at Lincoln, Nebraska. She was buried on December 8, 1984 in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at Cairo, Nebraska. She was a member of Dorothy Chapter 322, Order of the Eastern Star at Cairo.

Samuel and Viva had one child.

  1. Leota Sue Butler. Leota married on May 6, 1953 to Neal Edward Tyner. Neal's parents may have been Edward R. Tyner and Lydia K. [family name unknown] He was born on January 30, 1930 at Grand Island, Nebraska. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska. In 1983, he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of Banker Life Insurance of Nebraska. Neal served as a Marine during the Korean War, rising from private to captain.

    Leota and Neal have two children.

    1. Karen Sue Tyner who was born on October 16, 1958 at Lincoln, Nebraska. She married on May 30, 1981 at Lincoln, Nebraska to Mark Redraw.

      Karen and Mark have one child.

      1. Grant Patrick Redraw who was born on January 12, 1984.
    2. Morgan Matthew Tyner who was born on November 26, 1961 at Lincoln, Nebraska. He is presently studying dentistry.
