Samuel Craske Butler, son of James, was born about 1805 at Bottisham, England. This year is based on his age at the time of his death. He was christened on May 4, 1806. Samuel died on June 21, 1886 at Lode, England and was buried in the Baptist Chapel graveyard. He was eighty-one at the time of his death.
In 1851, Samuel was a fen laborer. His family lived on Lode Street in the Hamlet of Lode, England. In 1861, Samuel farmed forty-eight acres and employed two men. His family lived on High Road. In 1871, Samuel farmed thirty-six a cres but employed three men and one boy. His family lived on Main Street in the Hamlet of Bottisham-Lode. In 1881, Samuel had retired from farming. His family lived at 37 Lode Street in the Hamlet of Lode.
Harry J. Butler reported that Samuel was a postmaster at Lode, England for a number of years. The post office was operated from Samuel's shop in that hamlet.
Samuel married by banns on May 25, 1827 at Bottisham, England to Sarah Randall, daughter of Tabraham Randall and Ann Rawlingson. Witnesses to their marriage were William Flack and Jane Randall. Sarah's date of birth is presently unknown. Based on her age at the time of her death, she was born about 1805 at Bottisham, England. She was christened on January 26, 1806. Sarah died on August 14, 1890 at Lode, England and was buried in the Baptist Chapel graveyard. She was eighty-five at the time of her death.
Samuel and Sarah had nine children, all of whom appear to have been born in the Bottisham-Lode area of England.
