The Families of Fidelia Butler

Fidelia Ann Butler, daughter of William, was born about 1857 in Michigan. She was known as Delia. She died on May 13, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois.

Fidelia first married on April 4, 1878 at Dryden, Michigan to Daniel Sanborn, a widower, son of Elijah Sanborn and Sophia Sleeper. Witnesses to their marriage were Eliza C. Gray and Charles W. Gray. Daniel, depending upon which United States census return one reviews, was born either in 1818 or 1819. He was born in Canada. He died at the age of sixty-nine years, eleven months and eighteen days on May 4, 1887 at Dryden as a result of kidney disease. He is buried in Goodrich Cemetery at Almont, Macomb, Michigan. Based on his age at the time of his death Daniel was born on May 16, 1817. The couple had no children but raised a nephew of Dan named Frank Terry, who later married Annie Butler. Daniel was a farmer by profession. The 1850 United States census return indicated that Daniel was a blacksmith.

In the 1860 United States census return for the Dryden Township, Lapeer County, Michigan Daniel's real estate was valued at $2,500 and his personnel estate was valued at $500. In 1870 United States census return for the Town of Dryden, Lapeer County, Michigan Daniel's real estate had increased in value to $9,000 and his personnel estate had increased to $1,600.

Daniel appears to have been married twice before he married Fidelia. This assumption is based on the records and tombstones at Goodrich Cemetery in Almont, Michigan. Daniel first married Sarah [family name unknown]. Sarah was born on February 5, 1830. This date is based upon her age at the time of her death. She died at the age of twenty-eight years, seven months and twenty days on September 25, 1858. He married a second time to Elizabeth [family name unknown]. She died at the age of thirty-five years on December 25, 1874. This would indicate that Elizabeth was born about 1839.

Fidelia married a second time on July 26, 1887 at Dryden, Michigan to Frank A. Brigham, son of Martin Brigham and Annie McCormick. Frank was born about 1867 at Marine City, Michigan. He died prior to 1910, as he is not enumerated in the 1910 United States census return. Frank was a barber by profession.

Frank and Fidelia had at least three children. They are all enumerated in the 1900 United States census return for the Town of Metamora, Lapeer County, Michigan.

  2. Gwendolin Brigham was born in May of 1891. In 1910 and 1920, Gwendolin was a stenographer at the public library.
