The Family of James Butler and Jennie Lewis

James Samuel Butler, son of William, was born on May 26, 1866 at Whigville, Michigan. He died on March 7, 1934 at Oxford, Michigan. He is buried in the Oxford Cemetery.

According to the 1900 United States census for the Town of Leonard in Oakland County, Michigan, James was in the business of manufacturing lumber. According to the 1910 United States census return for the Town of Oxford in Oakland County, Michigan, his occupation was that of the County Drain Commissioner. According to the 1920 United States census return for the Town of Oxford in Oakland County, Michigan, James was the Chief Probation Officer of the county. From his obituary we learn that James taught at the National School in Leonard, Michigan, held the post of county drain commissioner in Oakland County for seventeen years, served two terms as county sheriff and was the chief probation officer of the county for seven years.

James married on July 1, 1893 to Jennie B. Lewis, daughter of Corsain (Corsone) Lewis and Elizabeth Merritt. The International Genealogical Index indicates that James and Jennie’s marriage took place at Leonard, Michigan. Jennie was born on October 23, 1871 at Whigville. She died on April 14, 1947 at Oxford, Michigan. She is buried in the Oxford Cemetery. Jennie was an active member of the Congregational Church, serving as deaconess for many years. She was affiliated with the O.E.S., Women’s Union, Oxford Garden Club, L.S. Club and the Republican Women’s Club.

James and Jennie had no children.
