Alice Louise Butler, daughter of Willliam, was born in May of 1875 in the State of Michigan. She died on October 28, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois. The month and year of Alice's birth has been taken from the 1900 United States census return for Cassopolis, Michigan.
She married sometime in 1893 to Elgin Monroe Stockdale, son of John N. Stockdale and Jennie Monroe . Elgin was born in May 4, 1873 in the State of Michigan. D.B. Robinson, in the material he published at http://www.ancestry.com, suggested that Elgin was born in Elkhart, Indiana. He died on December 23, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. Elgin was a painter, an auditor for the railroad and a salesman for consolidated industries.
Elgin, according to his World War I draft registration card dated September 10, 1918, is reported to have been of medium height and built and to have had blue eyes and grayish hair. He was forty-five at the time of his registration. Elgin and Alice lived at 1138 East 64th Street in Chicago at the time of his registration.
Alice and Elgin had, according to the 1910 United States census return for Chicago, three children. However, only one survived to be enumerated in the United States census returns.
In 1900, Alice and Elgin were living on O’Keefe Street in Cassopolis. In 1910 they were living at 7121 Greenwood Avenue in Chicago. This appears to have been an apartment or a multi-family house. In 1920 and 1930, the family was living at 1138 East 64th Street in Chicago. Elgin was paying eighty-five dollars a month for rent. The family had a radio.
