The Families of Samuel Butler

Samuel Butler was christened at Bottisham, England on June 16, 1728. He may have been buried on November 27, 1785 at Bottisham, England. The exact dates of his birth and death are presently unknown. From all indications, it would appear that Samuel was born, lived and died in the area of Bottisham, England.

Samuel first married on or about January 7, 1746 presumably at Bottisham, England to Sarah Hendris. {Her maiden name may be Flenders.} Her parentage, date and place of birth are presently unknown. She died on or about April 30, 1758 at Bottisham, England.

Samuel and Sarah had five children.

  1. John Butler was christened on June 14, 1747. He was buried on October 18, 1747.
  2. Mary Butler was christened on May 20, 1749. She may have been buried on January 9, 1811, althought it is not known for certain.
  3. John Butler was christened on March 31, 1751. He was buried on June 2, 1751.
  4. William Butler was christened on March 31, 1751. He was buried on June 9, 1751.
  5. William Butler was christened on June 11, 1754.

Samuel married, by banns, for the second time on June 1, 1761 at Bottisham, England to Ellen Potter. Witnesses to their marriage were Henry Peachley and Thos. Osborn. Although the date and place of her birth are presently unknown, based on her age at the time of her death, Ellen was born about 1730. She died at the age of thirty-six on or about May 15, 1766.

Samuel and Ellen had one child.

  1. Sarah Butler was christened on July 25, 1762. She may have been buried on July 26, 1783.

Samuel married for the third time on March 20, 1768 at Great Wilbraham, England to Elizabeth Ayres, nee Gotobed, a widow. Witnesses to their marriage were John Pitch and John Miller. To date nothing is known about her, except that she was previously married to Edward Ayres.

Samuel and Elizabeth had three children.

  1. Ann Butler was christened on August 14, 1768.
  2. John Butler was christened on October 14, 1770.
  3. James Butler was christened on June 13, 1773. He was buried on September 20, 1836.

Unless otherwise stated, all of Samuel's children apparently were christened, married or buried at Bottisham-Lode, England. Unfortunately the exact dates of their births and deaths are presently unknown.
